Indianapolis Colts running back Vick Ballard suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice and was placed on injury reserve today, according to multiple media reports.
ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the injury; Colts owner Jim Irsay later confirmed it on Twitter.
It's a tough break for Ballard and the Colts, who now have only Ahmad Bradshaw and Donald Brown left on their active roster. Ballard led the team with 13 carries for 63 yards in a Week 1 win over the Oakland Raiders, while Bradshaw rushed for 26 yards on seven carries.
Ballard rushed for 814 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie last season. The former Mississippi State product was a fifth-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
Bradshaw was signed as a free agent in June as he recovered from foot surgery, and the Colts intended for him to continue splitting carries with Ballard. In Ballard's absence, Brown jumps to No. 2 on the depth chart and likely gets a handful of carries this week against the Miami Dolphins.
In the longer term, the Colts are just as likely to kick the tires of free agents -- Michael Turner? -- in pursuit of depth. If Indianapolis does sign another back, he's likely to leapfrog Brown on the depth chart.
In fantasy football leagues, Bradshaw gets a slight bump in value in anticipation of an increased workload. Brown is still only usable in the deepest of league formats and for the most desperate of team owners.
Ultimately, though, Andrew Luck and the passing game will be most affected by Ballard's injury. The Colts are more likely to lean on Luck to move the football, albeit against opponents who have less respect for the run game.
