Maurice Clarett Asks Browns for Workout on Twitter After Trent Richardson Trade

Former Ohio State standout running back Maurice Clarett is looking for another chance to make an impact in the National Football League.

After the Cleveland Brows traded starter Trent Richardson, the third overall selection in the 2012 draft, to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a 2014 first-round pick, Clarett apparently sensed an opportunity. So he took to Twitter to ask for a workout.

He added that his personal problems, which were a major factor in his fall from grace, are now a thing of the past.

Clarett was a dynamic offensive force for Ohio State during his freshman season. He racked up more than 1,300 yards from scrimmage and scored 18 touchdowns for the Buckeyes, and it sure seemed like an NFL career was on the horizon.???

Instead, he was dismissed from Ohio State before getting a chance to build on his promising debut campaign. A combination of off-the-field problems left the program with little choice but to let go of a major piece of its offense.

He made a legal bid to become eligible for the 2004 NFL draft, but he was eventually denied entry. Instead, he had to prepare for the following year's draft.

The Denver Broncos?surprisingly selected?Clarett in the third round in 2005, but they cut him before he took a single snap. He was beat out by the likes of Mike Anderson, Tatum Bell and Ron Dayne.

Will Clarett ever get another look from the NFL?

Will Clarett ever get another look from the NFL?

  • Yes, he deserves a chance.

  • No, that ship has sailed.

The quick hook was just one of many setbacks the Ohio native has faced. He wrote about his situation in a two-part series for Grantland?titled, "Maurice Clarett: A Life in Two Parts."

With all that behind him, he's apparently looking for a second chance at an NFL career. He's now 29, an age that usually represents the back end of a running back's peak, but he hasn't had to endure the constant punishment of playing professional football.

That said, it's hard to peg his chances as anything better than an extreme long shot. In fact, it sounds like the Browns are already set to sign a replacement for Richardson in veteran Willis McGahee, per Dan Hanzus of NFL.com, pending him passing a physical.

Clarett was once a star on the rise, but now he's just looking for one more opportunity. It doesn't appear Cleveland plans on giving it to him.
