Gunmen Fire On U.N. Helicopters In Sudan
Gunmen from an Arab tribe fired on four U.N. helicopters taking off from a disputed north-south Sudan border town, an official said Wednesday, while Sudan's president gave northern troops a "green light" to attack southern forces if provoked.
U.N. spokeswoman Hua Jiang said the helicopters were fired on as they took off from Abyei town late Tuesday. She said about 14 rounds were fired from positions close to the U.N. compound. No helicopters were hit.
Both Sudan's north and south claim Abyei, a fertile region about the size of Connecticut that is located near several oil fields. Northern tanks and soldiers rolled into the disputed region Saturday following an attack on a northern army convoy last week.
Southern Sudan voted in January to secede from the north in July, but the north's occupation of Abyei has greatly strained north-south relations. The two regions fought a two-decade-plus civil war that claimed 2 million lives, and fears are rising Abyei could send the sides back to war.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir gave his army a green light to attack southern forces without seeking permission from Khartoum if they feel provoked, according to a statement carried Wednesday by Sudan's state news agency.
Since an attack last Thursday by southern troops on northern and U.N. forces, northern troops have moved south into Abyei, sending thousands of civilians fleeing. Northern aircraft are reported to have made bombing runs in the region, and the U.N. said that gunmen set homes ablaze and looted in Abyei town.
The south has called the move into Abyei an act of war but has not yet responded with force.
Al-Bashir said the U.S. is applying a double standard between the government of Sudan and the government of Southern Sudan by ignoring the fact that southern troops attacked northern troops last week, the event that set off the latest crisis.
The U.S. has been looking to reward Sudan for a successful southern independence process by removing Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terror, by helping it get debt relief and by normalizing relations.
Princeton Lyman, President Obama's Special Envoy to Sudan, said this week that those rewards are in jeopardy if the independence process is not completed. But al-Bashir indicated he was no longer interested in the incentives.
"We no longer fear the American stick nor do we desire its carrots," al-Bashir was quoted as saying.
The south's secession vote was promised in a 2005 peace deal that ended the north-south civil war. The conflict over Abyei could scuttle the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that promised the January independence referendum and the July 9 independence date.
A referendum on Abyei's future was supposed to have been held simultaneously, but the two sides could not agree on who was eligible to vote, and Abyei's referendum wasn't held. The black African tribe of the Ngok Dinka, which is allied with the south, and the Arab tribe of Misseriya, which is allied with the north, both claim the area.
Jiang, the U.N. spokesman, said that Misseriya tribesmen are moving south into Abyei town, though she did not know how many.

A house fire in Elizabethton leaves a family homeless.
Elizabethton fire officials tell us that a fire broke out in the garage of the house on Nancy Street early Sunday morning.
More than 5 fire units responded around 4:30 am but the fire had already spread into the house. Officials say the home is a complete loss.
Neighbors tell 11 Connects that both the husband and wife ran their small businesses from their home and fire crews says not much is salvageable from the wife's daycare business that she ran out of the basement.
?Their business- that was probably for Kay their main thing because she had a daycare business and Tim's business is outside but I'm sure it's affected it somehow,? says neighbor Charles Hendrix.
?In the bottom was a daycare,? explains Fire Captain Rusty Barnett. ?It's never a good time for a fire but no one was at home and no kids were around. So we were lucky that no one got hurt.?
Hendrix also says that the husband is a long time school bus driver for Carter County schools.
Luckily, the family was out of town at the time of the fire and no one was injured.
Fire crews will be back out investigating into what sparked the flames.

One day while walking through his fields, mending fences and checking on the livestock, a farmer found a little eagle fledgling which had fallen from a tree. The farmer did not have the heart to leave it where it was, so he picked it up and took it back to the farm, where he put it in the chicken coop in hope that the chickens would support it.
To the happiness of the farmer, the chickens took the eagle fledgling as one of their own. The eagle was quite happy and quickly learned from the other chicks how to eat corn and how to scratch round in the pen looking for food. The eagle even started to cluck like a chicken, which was to the farmer's great amusement.
One summer's afternoon, the chickens and the eagle were quietly eating corn in the pen, when high above them they all heard a loud screech, and looking up they all saw a beautiful golden eagle in full flight. At this, the eagle in the pen (now fully grown) was amazed, "What is that?" he asked the other chickens. "That is an eagle, king of the skies!" they replied, and they all stood and watched in amazement as the eagle in the sky glided effortlessly, proud and strong.
The next day the eagle in the pen was trying to fly. He flapped his huge wings, but to his amazement he could not get even a foot off the ground. He then sat there trying to screech like the eagle, but only made a clucking noise. The other chickens in the pen found this very funny and began to laugh. "What are you doing?" asked the lead hen. The eagle in the pen told all the other chickens that he wanted to "fly like the king of the skies and be free." This statement made all the other chickens burst out laughing. They said: "But you're just a chicken! Like us, you eat corn and scratch in the
pen - you're just a chicken."
"Oh yes," said the eagle, being overpowered by the other chickens as he put his head down sadly and started looking for corn, "Guess that is all I'll ever be."

Yesterday was a very fun-filled day that was supposed to be the end of the world but ended up being just a really awesome Saturday. To get things started, David and I were invited to our friends Tamar and Rob?s house for a Judgment Day BBQ and then last night we made our way to Pali House for Darion?s 30th birthday party. Today, I?m nursing a hangover so, yeah, it was a pretty sweet day.
Rob had these Jesus glasses that actually made you see the word JESUS and crosses when you looked at bright points of light. So cool. We busted open the pi?ata and ate amazing BBQ ? ?twas a lot of fun. Had the Rapture actually happened, it would?ve just put a stop on all the fun ? and no one wanted that.
After we BBQed, we made our way to Darion?s party and got to hang out with only a MILLION of his friends ? including Dexter star Michael C. Hall:
MCH is dating one of Darion?s friends so he decided to crash the party ? much to everyone?s GLEE :D Honestly, I was far too inibriated to even think about anything other than not falling over so ? my memories of last night?s party are hazy. I do remember getting to hang out with Jim and Derek, who I haven?t seen in ages and LOVE so dearly. I also got to hang out with Steph and Alek as well ? Darion has an uncanny way of getting people together again. Last night was a blast ? and I?m paying for it this morning.
This afternoon, David and I are jetting off to Las Vegas to spend a couple of days at the fabulous new Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino. We?ll be seeing Kylie Minogue in concert at the Colosseum at Caesar?s Palace tonight so David and I are very excited for our LV adventure. Happy Sunday!

Finding Beauty In A Small-Town Pageant

A small-town pageant is like the first audition for adulthood. It's not your peers judging you ? it's complete strangers.
At the Miss Shrimp Festival pageant in Fernandina Beach, Fla., the girls march onstage in brightly colored prom gowns. It's hard to tell them apart. It's a blur of big smiles, National Honor Society and so-and-so enjoys going to the beach. By the 10th contestant, people in the audience are turning to their neighbors and asking, "How many girls are in this thing?"
There are 27 girls in this pageant, but like everything else in high school, if you know their reputations, you know who to pay attention to. Even the contestants seem to agree on the two frontrunners.
"Emily Garvin. She is pretty much like the Pittsburgh Steelers of the pageant," says one contestant. "Like, you know she's going to do good."
"Sarah Parker," says another. "She has that thing, that one thing about her, when you walk into a room and she's just like, bam."
Emily and Sarah. Sarah and Emily. Sarah Parker, the other contestants tell me, is the most popular girl in school. This year she was homecoming queen. She displays the crown proudly on a bookshelf in her bedroom.
"This is my homecoming court crown," she says. "Won that, it's really cute. Yaaaay!"
Sarah's main competition, Emily Garvin, is the sophisticate. She spent her sophomore year abroad in Croatia, and she has a different type of award on display in her bedroom ? ribbons from a French competition.
"I competed in a French play and I got an excellente," she says. "And a reading test ? and I got a bon."
The pageant falls just weeks before the girls are set to graduate from high school, and it sort of feels like the ultimate showdown between Miss Popularity Sarah and Mademoiselle Excellente Emily.
Answering To The Judges
The first event is a one-on-one interview with the judges. Sarah, the homecoming queen, admits she's freaking out. Emily did the pageant last year, and says she's not nervous at all. Maybe she should be.
"Do you think Miley Cyrus is a good or bad influence on young girls, and why?" one judge asks Emily. She pauses as she answers.
"I... do not watch television, and the only magazine I read is Forbes Magazine, so I'm not as familiar with Miley Cyrus as I should be, apparently. Sorry," she laughs.
Her answers fail to impress Judge Jeff Bohn. "Emily was probably the biggest disappointment, once you started asking her questions and she started answering them," he says.
Sarah, on the other hand, does impress. One of her questions is, "If you could change anything that's going on in the country right now, what would you change?"
"Definitely energy crisis," Sarah answers. "I feel like everyone needs really to put their heads together, find some new ways to save the environment, you know, use less oil, like, less electricity, because I feel like a lot of the issues ? not just nationally but in the world ? are centered around energy."
Good enough for Bohn. "She, to me, is head and shoulders above most of 'em," he says.
Back on stage, the girls chat nervously as the judges tally up the scores. Finally, it's time for the winner to be announced.
"Our new Miss Shrimp Festival 2011 is..."
The girls whisper to themselves the names they expect to hear. Sarah, Emily. Emily, Sarah.
"Kalynn Higginbotham!"
And a whole row of girls in brightly colored dresses turn to look at the skinny one dressed in black.
Impressing Someone You've Never Met
"I actually didn't know that they said my name, because I was calling out somebody else's that I thought was going to win," Kalynn says later. "They're like, 'You won!' And I'm, like, 'Oh my gosh!'"
Almost everyone was surprised that the crown didn't go to Emily or Sarah. Neither of them took first runner-up ? or even second runner-up.
You could tell they were disappointed. Sarah left immediately after the pageant. She had to go to her job at the ice cream shop down the street.
Emily won Miss Congeniality, but she doesn't sound so congenial talking about Kalynn.
"She does not come off as a person who's got everything together, their life planned out ? which is not the best thing when you are 17 and 18 years old," Emily says. "She's got a little quirkiness and a little bit of a juvenile side, and I think that she's got a lot of learning to do."
It's an odd thing to say, because there is not much that screams juvenile about Kalynn. She's taking college classes while in high school and seems really dedicated.
"I plan to triple up on sciences, double up on math and pursue a career in pharmaceuticals," she says.
And this is what makes a small-town beauty pageant so different than any other type of prize in high school. Unlike being named cheerleading captain or homecoming queen, the crown doesn't always go to the most popular. Up on stage, in front of the judges, Kalynn can be whoever she wants.
"It's easier to impress strangers, because they don't know anything about you beforehand," she says. "At high school, things are petty and you know, people say stuff about other people that aren't true, so it's easier to talk to somebody who's never met you before than it is to talk to somebody who may not have met you, but has, you know, heard of you."
Whatever people in Fernandina Beach, Fla., thought of Kalynn before, it doesn't matter now. She's Miss Shrimp Festival 2011.
