Genetic variant increases risk of heart rhythm dysfunction, sudden death

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Cardiovascular researchers at the University of Cincinnati have identified a genetic variant in a cardiac protein that can be linked to heart rhythm dysfunction.

This is the first genetic variant in a calcium-binding protein (histidine-rich calcium binding protein) found to be associated with ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in dilated cardiomyopathy patients, opening up new possibilities for treatment.

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the heart becomes weakened and enlarged and cannot pump blood efficiently.

These findings are being presented for the first time at the International Society of Heart Research's Pathology and Treatment of Heart Failure meeting in Banff, Alberta, held May 27 through May 31, 2012.

The team led by Vivek Singh, PhD, a research scientist under the direction of Litsa Kranias, PhD, in the department of pharmacology and cell biophysics at UC, says that sudden cardiac death is a risk for patients with heart failure who are carriers of this variant in the histidine-rich calcium-binding protein because the calcium inside their heart cells is not properly controlled, possibly leading to the development of arrhythmias.

"The histidine-rich calcium-binding protein (HRC) is a regulator of calcium uptake and release in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, a network of tubes and sacs in heart muscle fibers that plays an important role in heart contraction and relaxation by releasing and storing calcium ions," Singh says.

"Recently, our group at UC and Athens, Greece, identified a genetic variant in HRC, named Ser96Ala, which showed a significant association with worsening ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in a group of patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. In this study, our team characterized the mechanisms and pathways that link the HRC variant with arrhythmias causing sudden death."

Researchers first generated animal models with cardiac-specific expression of the human normal (S96S) or altered (A96A) HRC.

"Unexpectedly, we found that contractility of heart cells significantly decreased with disturbed calcium regulation in A96A hearts when compared with S96S hearts," Singh says. "In addition, A96A heart cells showed more arrhythmic behavior under stress conditions."

Singh says this data could eventually provide new insights into pathways that control calcium regulation, leading to the development of new clinical interventions.

"Our results showed that the human HRC mutant model displayed altered intracellular calcium (Ca2+) handling, associated with slowed Ca2+ uptake and increased Ca2+ leak, which may promote arrhythmias under stress," Singh says. "These new findings are important because we can use this information to help develop new methods of screening human patients and preventing arrhythmia development in the carriers."

This study was funded by an American Heart Association Fellowship Award and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health.

Ever since he arrived here last August, Mr. Locke?s image as a ?regular guy? has won widespread admiration from Chinese bloggers and, it seems, irked the authorities.

The way he tried to get a discount at Starbucks with a coupon en route to Beijing, and carried his own backpack, is the polar opposite of the way aloof and pampered Chinese officials behave. So when Chinese citizens praise him, by implication they are criticizing their own leaders.

Lashing out at the US ambassador earlier this month for his role in protecting blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng, the Beijing Daily published a strongly worded criticism of his ?little tricks.?

But readers? reactions to the editorial were so negative that within hours ?Beijing Daily? was a banned search word on the Chinese Internet, effectively closing down social media debate on the article.

That setback does not appear to have chastened Beijing Daily, however, and today the paper put its foot in it again.

Editors used the daily?s account on Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like platform, to post a snide request, responding to another post about Locke?s wealth.

?Will Gary Locke please disclose his personal assets?? it asked.

The question was, perhaps, conceived as a sideways commentary on the lively debate currently underway in China about the need for top officials here ? often accused of corruption ? to disclose their wealth.

But of course, the editors simply revealed their ignorance. As scornful readers quickly informed them, Locke HAS disclosed his personal assets, just like every other member of the US government. (According to his 2010 declaration, he is worth between $1,356,025 and $7,615,999, which makes him the sixth richest person in the executive branch.)

?Of course Gary Locke?s personal assets have been disclosed,? read one comment on the Beijing Daily post. ?And what about the assets of those imperial officials [of ours]?

Within hours, Beijing Daily?s original post and all comments on it had been deleted from Sina Weibo, according to David Bandurski of Hong Kong University?s China Media Project, who tracked the incident in real time.

Two propaganda flops in less than two weeks: Beijing Daily is losing its touch.

Italy friendly cancelled after earthquake

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:14 a.m. ET May 29, 2012

PARMA, Italy (AP) -Italy's friendly against Luxembourg has been canceled after another earthquake shook northern Italy on Tuesday.

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit in the morning, killing at least 10 people in the same region still struggling to recover from another deadly tremor on May 20.

The quake was just 36 miles (58 kilometers) east of Parma, where Italy was scheduled to play Luxembourg in a Euro 2012 warm-up match. The team hotel was evacuated briefly in the morning.

"Faced with what happened, to the tremors that keep coming, we're not playing the Italy game," Vincenzo Bernazzoli, president of the Parma province said. "In our region thousands of citizens have been devastated in a few hours. With the victims, with the continuing shocks, it didn't seem right to us to continue with the game. Football has to stop."

It is another disruption to Italy's preparations after the Azzurri training center was raided on Tuesday by police investigating a match-fixing scandal. Domenico Criscito was sent home after he was placed under investigation while Leonardo Bonucci is also reportedly under suspicion but has had no official warning and remains with the squad.

Italy went on to win the World Cup the last time it had its tournament preparations disrupted. The 2006 match-fixing scandal - known as Calciopoli - resulted in Juventus being relegated to Serie B for a season, plus points penalties for several other Serie A teams and lengthy bans for club and refereeing officials.

Braves snap 8-game skid, beat Cardinals

By PAUL NEWBERRY

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:54 p.m. ET May 29, 2012

ATLANTA (AP) - Two big swings and one last 98-mph fastball left the Atlanta Braves with a giant sigh of relief.

Dan Uggla hit a three-run homer and Michael Bourn also went deep Tuesday night, leading the Braves to a 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals that snapped an eight-game losing streak - Atlanta's longest in more than two years.

"This is not an indication of what's going to happen the next day or the next week or the next month," Uggla said. "But it definitely snaps the feeling of, `Aww, man, are we ever going to win again?"'

Bourn led off the bottom of the first with his fifth homer of the season, tying a career high. Uggla made it 4-0 in the third, sending one into the seats in left-center. The Cardinals closed within a run in the seventh, but Eric O'Flaherty and Craig Kimbrel each worked one perfect with two strikeouts to preserve the win.

Kimbrel earned his 14th save in 15 chances, ending the game by fanning Matt Holliday on a fastball that clocked 98 mph. The right-hander pumped his fist and slapped hands with his teammates, everyone looking as though a weight had been lifted.

"Everyone knows how bad we've been scuffling," Uggla said. "When you get that first one, it eases the tension, eases the pressure. We know what it feels like to win again. It was obviously a big night for us."

Randall Delgado (3-5) worked into the sixth, allowing three runs, and the Cardinals got closer in the seventh on Yadier Molina's third RBI of the night, a run-scoring single. He went 4-for-4, including a solo homer.

Moline liked the previous day better, when he had just one hit but the Cardinals won.

"I feel good," said Molina, who is hitting .560 (14-for-25) with three homers and 11 RBIs during a six-game hitting streak. "At the same time, I'd trade my 1-for-5 from last night and the win and not take the 4-for- 4 and the loss."

Jake Westbrook (4-4) struggled to keep his sinker down and lasted only five innings.

"That's a couple of games in a row I've put us in a hole," he said. "I've got to do a better job. With the sinker that I have, that should keep the ball in the yard."

The Braves shook things up before the game, sending reliever Kris Medlen to the minors so he could stretch out his arm and return to the big leagues as a starter. He was replaced on the roster by speedy outfielder Jose Constanza, who started in left and batted ninth - ahead of Delgado - as manager Fredi Gonzalez looked for ways to shake the team out of its worst slump since a nine-game winless stretch in April 2010.

"Why not?" Gonzalez said.

The unusual lineup paid off in the fifth, when Constanza led off with a single, moved to second on Westbrook's errant throw to first, raced to third on Bourn's deep flyout and sped home on Westbrook's wild pitch. That gave the Braves a 5-2 lead, which turned out to be just enough to hold off the Cardinals.

"He brings the team a little energy," Gonzalez said of Constanza, who also sparked the Braves last season after being called up.

Molina had his third four-hit game of the season. He began the comeback with a run-scoring single in the fourth, when St. Louis scored twice to halve Atlanta's lead to 4-2. Molina followed in the sixth with his eighth homer, a one-out shot into the left-field seats. Then, in the seventh, he came through again with an RBI single to right off Jonny Venters, making it a one-run game.

But Venters, whose struggles have apparently cost him his role as the eighth-inning setup man to Kimbrel, escaped the jam by striking out Matt Adams with runners at first and third.

"Jonny made some strides," Gonzalez said. "He got them hitting ground balls. Now we've got to work on getting them to hit ground balls at somebody."

Westbrook gave up only five hits, but the long ball sent him to his fourth straight start without a win. Bourn drove a 2-2 pitch into the seats to start the Atlanta first, tying the career high for homers that he set with Houston in 2008. There's plenty of time to take down that mark, with four months left in the season.

"I'm not trying to hit home runs," Bourn said. "They just come when they come."

Bourn took the more customary leadoff role in the third, working Westbrook for a one-out walk. Martin Prado singled on a hit-and-run and Brian McCann grounded out before Uggla came through with his eighth homer.

Notes: The Cardinals outhit the Braves 10-5. ... Gonzalez didn't say who Medlen will replace in the rotation once he returns from Triple-A Gwinnett, but left-hander Mike Minor (2-4, 6.98 ERA) is the most likely candidate to get bumped. ... Atlanta also snapped a streak of four straight games giving up at least seven runs. ... Skip Schumaker's single in the fifth extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Reducing tuberculosis transmission in geographic "hotspots" where infections are highest could significantly reduce TB transmission on a broader scale, according to a study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. An analysis of data from Rio de Janeiro showed that a reduction in TB infections within three high-transmission hotspots could reduce citywide transmission by 9.8 percent over 5 years, and as much as 29 percent over 50 years. The study was published May 28 by the journal PNAS.

"Targeting treatment of 'core groups' as a way to reduce community-wide transmission is common with diseases like HIV and malaria, but is less accepted as a mantra for TB control," said David Dowdy, MD, PhD, ScM, lead author of the study and assistant professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Epidemiology. "Our findings suggest that hotspots containing 6 percent of a city's population can be responsible for 35 percent or more of its ongoing TB transmission. Controlling TB in these hotspots may have a similar impact on long-term, community-wide TB incidence as achieving the same targets in the remaining 94 percent of the population."

For the study, Dowdy and his colleagues developed mathematical models for TB transmission using surveillance data from Rio de Janeiro. Each model tested different scenarios for TB transmission between the hotspot and the rest of the community. Co-infection with HIV was also factored into the model.

According to the study, reducing TB transmission rates in the hotspot to those in the general community reduced citywide TB incidence by a mean 2 percent per year over the first 5 years. By year 50, TB incidence was reduced by 29.7 percent, reflecting a 62.8 percent reduction in incidence in the hotspot and a 23.1 percent reduction in the remaining community.

Tuberculosis infects more than 8.8 million people worldwide, resulting in 1.4 million deaths each year. The disease is known to cluster in hotspots typically characterized by crowding, poverty and other illnesses such as HIV. Nevertheless, TB transmission appears to be more homogeneous than that of many other infectious diseases, in which 20 percent of the population may generate 80 percent of infections.

According to Dowdy, "TB may not follow the same '80/20' rule that we see in parasitic or sexually transmitted diseases, but the '35/6' rule seen in our study suggests that targeting hotspots is still the best way to control TB in a community."

When Samsung first announced its already hot (pre-)selling Galaxy S III, it also announced that the device would launch in Europe on May 29, arriving on North American carriers in June. Those sorts of promises are easily broken, but it appears that the N.A. launch date may still hit June. The image of a pre-order flyer has been leaked online showing a June 20th date for Canadian carriers Rogers, Bell, Telus, and Virgin Mobile. The original posters of the image, Mobile Syrup, were then asked to pull the image, which makes one think that the June 20 date might be true [as folks get a lot more antsy when the info is correct].Still, the image was picked up before it was pulled, and that's where the link currently directs. It is unclear who asked Mobile Syrup to pull the image, and how long the new image will remain online is, of course questionable.

The Samsung Galaxy S III is the latest in the Galaxy S series. Both the GS and GS2 were huge hits. As noted above, a European retail launch date has been announced; it's believed the device might hit pre-order status in Canada by May 30, but that is still unconfirmed.

In terms of the specs, we know that the device will ship with a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED 1,280 x 720 display; a quad-core Samsung Exynos system-on-a-chip (SoC) processor; an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 1.9MP front-facing camera; along with Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.x), and Samsung's TouchWiz skin.

It will also have S Voice, a new Siri rival developed in concert with Vlingo (which has a stand-alone Android app in Google Play), enhancements to gesture functionality, facial tracking, and S Beam, and enhanced Android beaming feature.

The all-important cellular technology support will depending on the region you live in, but there is either HSPA+ or LTE functionality.?Pricing for North American markets is still unknown, but sites like Expansys are pre-selling versions of the device, with a version of the Galaxy S III going for about $700 unlocked.

(AP) ? It was an hour before the Indianapolis 500, and Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan found a quiet corner to prepare for the race. They were interrupted by Parnelli Jones, Bobby Unser and Johnny Rutherford, three of the greatest drivers in IndyCar history.

"T.K. and I were getting our pictures taken. We were like a couple of kids," Franchitti said. "We were with the legends of the sport."

Hey, Dario, you're a legend now, too.

Franchitti became the 10th driver in the 96 years of Indianapolis to win three or more 500s, picking up his third on Sunday by winning a last-lap trophy dash with Takuma Sato to the checkered flag. Sato tried to pass for the lead going into the first turn, pulled even with Franchitti, then spun hard into the wall after their wheels appeared to make contact.

It let Franchitti sail away to the win on a day that started and ended as a tribute to Dan Wheldon, who won the race a year ago but was killed in an October crash in the IndyCar season finale. Finishing right behind him was teammate Scott Dixon and then Kanaan ? three of D-Dub's closest friends.

"Everybody up there was a friend of Dan's, and that about sums it up. Everybody loved him," Franchitti said as bagpipes played over the public address system. "I think D-Dub would be proud of that one."

Franchitti can be proud of what he's done.

The Scot has long been reluctant to consider his place in IndyCar history, even though his accomplishments have clearly made him one of the greats. He's won the last three championships, has three Indy 500 wins and with 31 career victories is tied with Sebastien Bourdais and Paul Tracy on the all-time wins list.

One more win will move Franchitti into seventh place in the record books. The only drivers ahead of him? The giants of open-wheel racing: three Unsers, two Andrettis and A.J. Foyt, the all-time wins leader.

"I'm very proud of the achievements, whether it's Indy wins, championships, every one of the race wins," he said. "Sometimes I look back, but generally I'm trying to look forward. When I retire, that's the time to look back."

Much of his success has come since 2009, when he returned from a brief foray into NASCAR. Franchitti ran only 12 races in stock cars in 2008, missing a stretch with a broken ankle before owner Chip Ganassi pulled the plug on the team because of sponsorship woes.

He was back in IndyCar the next year, rolling on to become the most decorated driver in the series. Franchitti has 13 wins, two Indy 500s and three consecutive championships since his return.

"He was back to something that he was really comfortable with and around the people that he knew really well," Dixon said. "I think he was actually hungry after that, too, because he wanted to prove when he came back that he was still the driver that he was. He's definitely done that ? maybe a little too much."

It's fitting that his latest feat came at Indy, where Wheldon was on everyone's minds Sunday.

And as his three friends lined up with six laps remaining for the final restart ? Kanaan out front, Franchitti and Dixon second and third ? they couldn't help but wonder if Wheldon was at play.

"Kind of like old times, the three of us back and forwards," Franchitti said. "I thought, 'Dan is laughing at us right now going at it.'"

The elation for Franchitti's win was tempered by the heartbreak for two other deserving drivers. Dixon, a one-time Indy 500 winner, temporarily relocated his family to St. Petersburg, Fla., to support Wheldon's wife and two sons, and Kanaan, 0 for 11 now at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, had openly wept following the death of his former teammate.

"I think a lot of us that were close to Dan, you know, you wanted it that little bit more," Dixon said. "I guess maybe in the back of your mind, you figured he would probably help you out today, too. I think in that situation, seeing how it lined up with the top three, three of Dan's friends, it was a tough one."

The race had developed into what was expected to be a duel to the finish between Franchitti and Dixon. But when the Scot made his final pass of Dixon with two laps to go, he pulled Sato with him and it sapped Dixon's momentum.

So the last-lap pass attempt was Sato's for the taking ? "Job done," he later admitted thinking ? but he couldn't pull it off as he hugged the inside white line through Turn 1. His wheels appeared to touch Franchitti's, he spun into the wall, and Franchitti pulled away past for the win ? this one, just like the first two, under caution.

Dixon crossed the finish line in second, and Kanaan was third, and Franchitti was reminded of the delicate balance in celebrating a team win vs. beating a teammate.

"I want to beat Scott. I know he wants to beat me. I don't think I've met maybe a more competitive individual, except maybe Dan in the early years," Franchitti said. "Out on the track, he's competition, but a teammate, and then afterward he's my friend. I see the disappointment in his face. I see the disappointment in T.K.'s face.

"I think both those guys will get more championships and Indy wins. They're just too good not to. When you beat guys like that, I take that as a big accomplishment because, God, they're not easy to beat."

Kanaan, who used a bold move on a late restart to dart from fifth to first, couldn't hold off Franchitti and Dixon on the last restart. He was OK with the final result.

"I don't think it could have been a better result for Dan," Kanaan said. "Wherever he is right now, he's definitely making fun of Sato, I can tell you that, and he's giving Dario a tap on the back for sure, and he was going to call me a wanker that I didn't win this thing.

"I'm glad this is over. I'm glad that now I hope we can all move on and just remember Dan the way Dan was ? a happy guy, a wonderful friend."

Wheldon's wife, Susie, went to Victory Lane to congratulate Franchitti, who hid his tears of joy behind a pair of white sunglasses worn in tribute because they were Wheldon's preference. She then sat next to Franchitti's wife, actress Ashley Judd, in the backseat of the convertible ? the same seat she had a year ago for Wheldon's win ? for the victory lap around the 2.5-mile oval.

The day opened with car owner Bryan Herta driving a single memorial lap around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the car Wheldon drove to victory last year. Fans were given white sunglasses to wear on laps 26 and 98, marking the car numbers Wheldon used in his two wins.

It was Susie Wheldon's first trip to any race track since her husband's death, and she watched from Dixon's pit stand with his wife, Emma.

So it was apt on this hot day ? the temperature hit 91 degrees, just one shy of the Indy 500 record set in 1937 ? that one of the most competitive races in history ended with a frantic push from Wheldon's friends. Ten drivers swapped the lead 35 times, shattering the record of 29 in the 1960 race won by Jim Rathmann.

Until the last lap, when Sato made his move for the win, the race was close but largely incident free.

The only multi-car accident came when a spin by Mike Conway collected Will Power, who came to Indy as the series points leader and winner of the last three races this season. It was a somewhat frightening accident as Conway, who broke his front wing when he hit one of his crew members on pit road, hit the outside wall and his car tilted on its side before coming to rest. And Helio Castroneves had to deftly maneuver past a bouncing tire that still grazed one of his own wheels.

Besides that, though, the race was slowed by just seven other cautions ? including the one on the last lap ? for 39 of the 200 laps.

The series' next stop is June 3 in Belle Isle, Mich.

Ex-football player, wrongly jailed for rape, wants money from state

Rape conviction dismissed

A former high school football star who had his rape conviction dismissed plans no legal action against the woman who recanted the sexual assault claim she made 10 years ago.

But Brian Banks, 26, does plan to file a claim against the state, seeking money for his time behind bars, his attorney said.

"We do not plan on taking any legal action against Gibson," said Banks' attorney, Justin Brooks of the California Innocence Project, referring to Banks' accuser, Wanetta Gibson. "We do plan on filing a state claim for the $100 a day Brian is entitled to under State Law 4900 for every day he was wrongfully incarcerated."

Gibson was a high school sophomore when she accused Banks of raping her at Long Beach Poly High School. She and her family sued the school, receiving a $750,000 settlement, and Banks spent five years in prison after pleading no contest to forcible rape.

While a judge Thursday tossed out the rape charge, it remains far from certain if Gibson, 24, will face any consequences.

L.A. prosecutors have said they have no plans to charge her with making false accusations, saying it would be a tough case to prove.

Legal experts noted it could be difficult for the Long Beach school district and its insurer to get the settlement back.

Then there is the reality of Gibson?s life.

Court records suggest she has few assets: She received public assistance for a time and her children, ages 4 and 5, still do, according to two suits brought by the county in an attempt to collect child support. Gibson, who could not be reached for comment, was ordered initially to pay a $600 a month toward their support. But in the last year, county officials said she didn?t have to pay anything, citing a lack of income and employment.

According to Banks and his private investigator, Gibson has refused to admit to prosecutors that she lied to avoid having to return the money she and her family had won in court.

She also said she feared it would affect her relationship with her children, Banks' attorney alleged in court papers.

The statute of limitations for making a false claim is four years, but experts say it could restart when a previously hidden crime is discovered. In this case, Gibson testified in 2003 during Banks? preliminary hearing but recanted her accusation last year. ?No, he did not rape me,? she told Banks and his private investigator in a recorded conversation.

?The prosecution can say that we only learned last year that the crime of perjury occurred and therefore we are still within the statute of limitations,? Loyola Law professor Stan Goldman said.

The fact that Gibson was a juvenile when she initially made her accusation poses a potential complication, as does the fact that she has since recanted her recantation, but Goldman said the large monetary settlement she received might make charging her a priority to prosecutors trying to ensure the integrity of the criminal justice system.

Police in Long Beach said there is no official investigation into Gibson?s conduct, but officers are ?reviewing the matter? and ?will be in consultation with the district attorney?s office following the review,? spokeswoman Lisa Massacani said.

Brian Banks plans to file claim against California

Brian Banks, center, reacts with his mother, Leomia Myers and father, Jonathan Banks, outside court after his rape conviction was dismissed.

A former high school football standout who was wrongfully jailed wants California to pay for the time he spent behind bars.

Brian Banks, 26, plans to file a claim against the state requesting money for his six years spent in prison, his attorney told the Los Angeles Times.

According to his lawyers, Banks is entitled to $100 a day for every day he spent behind bars under state law.

Banks was exonerated this week after his accuser, Wanetta Gibson, admitted she had made up the whole story and had been reluctant to come forward because of a settlement she received from the school district.

She also, according to the newspaper, had been worried it would affect her relationship with her two children now aged 4 and 5.

The one-time linebacker was 16 when Gibson, then a high school sophomore, accused him of raping her.

At the time, he was a star middle linebacker at Long Beach Polytechnic High School and had verbally committed to a full scholarship to USC and a dream of playing in the NFL.

But that was all crushed when he took a plea deal on the suggestion of his attorney who Banks said warned him the jury was likely to convict him.

A break in his case came when Gibson friended him on Facebook after he was released on parole saying she wanted to make ?bygones be bygones?. Eventually her confession was recorded and with the help of the California Innocent Project, Banks was exonerated.

"It's been a struggle. But I'm unbroken, and I'm still here today," he told reporters this week.

Lawyers for Banks told the Times he doesn?t plan on taking legal action against Gibson.

?I know it?s best for me to try and move forward in a positive manner for the betterment of me, it hurts no one but myself to hang on to the type of negative energy,? Banks said Friday in an appearance on the ?Today? show.

Prosecutors told the Times they have no immediate plans to take on the now 24-year-old woman either.

But according to a spokeswoman, police in Long Beach are ?reviewing the matter?.

The Gains Offered By Green Energy Sources

Do not think like you are the only one who has a tough time locating solid information about green living. We are all acquainted with the feelings of trying to find out about a specific thing and not even being certain of what is needed. There are many individuals, who publish fantastic content online, but they are not known, and that makes it quite difficult with trusting them. Probably just about every person knows all too well with the online environment. Do keep reading because what we have to convey about green living may surprise you.

?

With energy usage, many people are searching for ways to make it better and also easier to do. Considering that non-renewable energy options are being exhausted and the price keeps rising, there is a lot of exploration for alternative energy sources. Since it is sustainable and won?t be used up, renewable energy has a big advantage over non-renewable sources. Also, renewable energy does not produce any harmful consequences on the environment because there are no waste products.

?

It?s also been exhibiting that countries which are using renewable energy sources are having some economic benefits. They have energy jobs that are positioned away from their cities, but other areas are reaping the benefits. Renewable energy has helped specific local services and even tourism receive money. Fossil fuels continue to dominate in output and renewable energy sources are not able to produce the same amount yet. I?m looking forward to what technology may provide us later on, even though I have a many things to research for my ultrasound technician requirements I always spare some time to check out further information regarding renewable energy sources. The reliability of the renewable energy supply has been inconsistent. Considering that plenty of alternative sources are impacted by the weather, that can be a drawback. Changes in weather take place no matter where in the world these energy sources are used.

?

Solar energy is the one most people know about, and it is a fantastic source because the sun is actually efficient, along with being free. The sun creates enough energy that it can be used to generate electricity however it does have limitations. Not enough solar energy can be produced in places where it rains frequently or is located at high latitudes. Another efficient electricity source is actually wind energy, and it is capable of replacing the future electric consumption by up to 20%. It is great for the environment because it does not make any harmful gases. Large windmills are needed for producing wind energy and must be located in the vicinity of coastlines or at high latitudes.

?

These few considerations will make a difference in your information as they relate to green living. Of course we strongly recommend you discover more about them. We feel you will find them to be very helpful in a lot of ways. However, we always emphasize that anyone takes a closer look at the overall big picture as it applies to this subject. Continue reading because you do not want to miss these crucial knowledge items.

?

Two energy sources that come from water are tidal energy and hydroelectric power, where one makes use of dams and the other the natural tides from the ocean. It is another clean way of producing energy, but with a few disadvantages. Energy via hydroelectric dams is incredibly expensive for the reason that putting a dam on a river costs a lot. Tidal energy power plants have very strict requirements and are able to be used in unique areas. The creatures in the location might be impacted by the presence of a tidal power plant.

?

There are some disadvantages for alternative sources of energy, but that doesn?t indicate they aren?t worthwhile. These natural sources of energy provide greater positive aspects compared to the fossil fuels we currently use. We are still finding out what is out there and we will continue to locate new and safer ways to produce energy.

?

What we have just discussed is really all the beginning in so a lot of ways. You can simply spend weeks researching green living and still not cover all the ground work. This is just like many other areas in which you can have a real edge when you possess the right kind of information. A lot of people see the mountains of info on the web and they get intimidated in a short time.

Picking new leader, Egyptians search for superman

(AP) ? Egyptians say they want their next leader to be honorable, smart, a knight, a man with a heart, a military man, a religious man, one who goes down and meets with the people. What they are really looking for is a superman.

Egypt's next president is facing an incredibly tall order of problems, from a tumbling economy and a beat-up security force to decrepit schools and hospitals that can't even provide enough incubators for premature babies.

Turning out in large numbers to vote for the first time in free and competitive presidential elections, a deeply engaged population have a lot of expectations from the leader that will replace the longtime leader Hosni Mubarak, whom they ousted in a popular uprising last year.

"We want a flawless president. We want him strong, just, respectable, clean, someone who feels for the poor. We basically want a superman," said Heba el-Sayed, a 42-year old teacher who was asking her colleagues outside a polling station in the popular neighborhood of Sayeda Zeinab who they voted for.

Egyptians have never had the chance to pick a leader. Mubarak, who was often derisively labeled as "pharaoh" by Egyptians, came to power in 1981 after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat at the hands of Islamic militants, mostly because he signed a peace treaty with Israel. He was re-elected multiple times after that, mainly in yes-or-no referendums in which he was the only candidate.

The pent-up anger that exploded against Mubarak's reign on January 25, 2011 built up over years because of festering corruption, which created a tight ruling clique around his family and cronies. It left a twisted economy, that soared in terms of economic development indicators, but was unevenly distributed ? leaving vast sections of the population ? up to 40 percent? hovering near or fallen far below the poverty line.

Denying services and attention to the poor seemed to be a way Mubarak's regime kept such classes in constant need of handouts and dependent on a patronage system, which doled out small benefits to those who cooperated and stayed under his control. This left a debilitated public health and education system, where only those who can pay can receive better services.

His authoritarian regime, which has maintained good relations with the world, relied heavily on security agencies whose widespread torture and abuse were the immediate reason behind the uprising.

The 18 days of protests that brought his fall were not limited to the poor or the abused. They brought in a broad spectrum of classes, angered over every aspect of the stagnation and worried that it would only deepen if Mubarak's son, Gamal, succeeded him as was widely expected.

So in the voting that began Wednesday and continued Thursday, the hundreds of thousands who lined up at the polls had a litany of dreams. Freedom to walk freely with girlfriends or boyfriends without police harassment. Improved sewage systems. Better education.

"I've lived under Gamal Abdel-Nasser, Anwar Sadat, and Hosni Mubarak," Mahmoud Ahmed, a 70-year old businessman, said, listing Egypt's last three presidents as he waited to vote in the impoverished Cairo district of Basateen.

"What we want to see is someone with the firmness of Nasser, the political skills of Sadat," he said.

"And nothing at all from Mubarak."

He said he wants the next president's priority to hold a "real" trial for Mubarak ? reflecting how many Egyptians dismiss the current trial of the ousted leader as a sham.

Mubarak has been on trial for months over charges of corruption and complicity in the killing of nearly 900 protesters during the uprising against him. As the proceedings have dragged on, many have grown skeptical that the trial organized under the military rulers would constitute a fair trial. A verdict is expected on June 2 before the name of a president is announced.

For Yasmine Abdel-Rahman, a 22-year veiled student who was voting in the southern industrial district of Helwan, a religious leader can bring justice. She was voting for the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was Mubarak's most organized opposition and has seized its place as Egypt's most powerful political movement since his ouster.

"First thing he must do is get back the rights of all the martyrs. Many mothers' hearts are broken," she said.

Ali Ragab, a 27-year old who runs a photo shop in a rundown quarter of Cairo's Maadi neighborhood, agrees. But he thinks only a president that can rival the charisma and populist ideals of Nasser can do the job.

He's voting for Hamdeen Sabahi, a veteran opposition figure under Mubarak who proclaims Nasser as his role model. Sabahi has recently risen in polls, particularly among the working class and younger generations.

"I want a leader like Nasser, who looks after the poor. I wish those days come back," said the dreamy-eyed Ragab, born 15 years after Nasser's death.

"We need a leader that has extraordinary skills, one that has a heart, a big brain, and can play politics. He must be all that," he said as he helped other voters find their polling station.

Zeinab Nabil, a 28-year old mother, lost two of her triplets because of an unexplainable shortage of incubators in public hospitals. After their premature birth in September 2010, she ran from hospital to hospital for months trying to find incubators and proper care, only to be turned away.

Now she is indebted to the banks for more than $8,000 from the salary of her husband, who works in another city. The only good luck she's had is that her landlord dropped her rent by a third after the revolution because of her economic woes.

"I want the president to spare other people my troubles. I want him to fix the hospitals and provide incubators," she said. "I want him to be just. I want him to walk among us. I want him to be human."

None of the 13 candidates running in the first round is likely to win outright. So a run-off will be held between the top two on June 16-17, with the victor announced June 21.

The president's powers have not yet been defined. The military rulers, the Islamist-dominated parliament and various groups and political parties of liberals and secularists have been locked in a struggle over how to write the constitution that will define Egypt's political system, the role of religion and the place of the military in the future.

The explosive mix of high expectations and a power struggle between political factions will set the tone for the next president's entire term, supposed to be for four years. The stormy transition since Mubarak's fall has piled on even more demands, with some wanting the ruling generals held accountable for mismanagement and violence during the past 16 months.

And the new president will face the constant threat of protests from a politically charged population.

"There is now an open court in Tahrir. No matter who is elected," said Hamdi Abdel-Zaher, a 40 year old accountant, referring to Tahrir Square, the epicenter of the anti-Mubarak uprising and months of protests since against the ruling military.

Fares Kamel, a 42-year old trader in a village on the outskirts of Cairo, said despite the destruction of the image of a pharaoh among Egyptians, many still yearn for it, seeing him as a savior.

"They want to be led," Kamel said. He thinks the president must be "a knight, who has a sword and is not afraid to use it or to die using it. We want someone with dignity, and not a filthy rich man. We don't want a thief."

"We want someone that loves this country, and satisfies people's needs. God be with him."
