Former President Bill Clinton will have a marquee role in this summer's Democratic National Convention, where he will make a forceful case for President Barack Obama's re-election and his economic vision for the country, several Obama campaign and Democratic party officials said Sunday.

The move gives the Obama campaign an opportunity to take advantage of the former president's immense popularity and remind voters that a Democrat was in the White House the last time the American economy was thriving.

Obama personally asked Clinton to speak at the convention and place Obama's name in nomination, and Clinton enthusiastically accepted, officials said. Clinton speaks regularly to Obama and to campaign officials about strategy.

Clinton's prominent role at the convention will also allow Democrats to embrace party unity in a way that is impossible for Republican rival Mitt Romney.

George W. Bush, the last Republican to hold the White House, remains politically toxic in some circles. While Bush has endorsed Romney, he is not involved in his campaign and has said he does not plan to attend the GOP convention.

Clinton will speak in prime-time at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5, the night before Obama formally accepts the party nomination. While the number two on the ticket often speaks that night, the Obama campaign has instead decided that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak on the same night.

Biden will introduce Obama on Sept. 6 before more than 70,000 people expected to fill an outdoor stadium in Charlotte, and millions more on television.

The vice president's speech will focus on outlining many of the challenges the White House has faced over the past four years and the decisions Obama made to address them, officials said.

"To us it's about deploying our assets in the most effective way," Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod said. "To have President Clinton on Wednesday night laying out the choice facing voters, and then having Vice President Biden speak right before the president in prime time on Thursday, giving a testimony to the decisions the president has made, the character of his leadership and the battle to rebuild the middle class that's so central to our message."

Clinton's role at the convention was to be formally announced Monday. It was first reported by The New York Times.

Clinton spoke at the 2008 convention, part of a healing process for the Democratic party following the heated primary battle between Obama and the former president's wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since then, the ties between Obama and Bill Clinton have strengthened significantly. Obama has called on the former president for advice several times during his term and the two have appeared together this year at campaign fundraisers for Obama's re-election bid.

Archival Hudson's Bay Co. film restored, tours Canada

Dr. Peter Geller visited London in 1996 on a hunch. Lucky for both him and his research, his gut feeling turned out to be correct.

That film was The Romance of the Far Fur Country, a silent documentary shot by filmmakers hired by the Hudson?s Bay Company (HBC). The silent documentary was filmed in 1919, premiered to a Winnipeg audience in 1920 in honour of the HBC?s 250th anniversary, but then fell out of the public eye.

However, Geller, the Vice Provost and Associate Vice-President Academic at University of the Fraser Valley, suspected the reels might be housed in the National Film and Television Archives at the British Film Institute. Sure enough, upon his arrival in London, he was able to track down the film in the archives. The only problem? It was far from a finished film: the footage was completely out of order.

Geller?s research has long revolved around the visual history of the Canadian North, which this film fit into perfectly. After watching and studying the footage in London, he included a chapter about The Romance of the Far Fur Country in his 2004 book, Northern Exposures: Photographing and Filming the Canadian North, 1920-1945.

Spurred by the interest of Geller and filmmaker Kevin Nikkel, the footage was returned from Britain to the HBC Archives in Manitoba earlier this year. The footage was digitized prior to its return to Canada in the fall.

But their work didn?t end there. Now captivated by the film footage, Geller and Nikkel have been working together to piece the film back into some kind of order so it can once again be shown to a Canadian audience.

?There is eight hours of raw footage, which the original filmmakers edited into a two-hour-long documentary,? Geller notes. ?The footage we found in the London archive isn?t the final film ? it?s a jumble of images and out of order captions. There?s a lot of work to be done to piece it back together.?

The team has now assembled the footage into a 30 minute film, which is being shown across Canada in the coming months. It?s already played in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton and several communities in northern Alberta, including Fort Chipewyan, and is coming to Vancouver on July 31. After that, it will travel to Victoria and onto Alert Bay.

Geller says he hopes to help bring the film to as many communities as possible ? especially the communities the original film team visited in 1919.

?We?re basically retracing the steps of the film. We?re making an effort to return the footage to the communities, since it was never screened in the communities it was shot,? Geller explains. ?It?s this huge, cross-Canada odyssey, and we want to connect that back to its roots.?

The original film crew started in Montreal, travelled up the St. Lawrence to Labrador, up to what is now Nunavut, into northern Ontario, and then over to northern Alberta, and finally over and up the sunshine coast to Alert Bay. Geller and Nikkel hope to follow at least some of that journey.

?It?s a fascinating film that helped to draw Canada together,? Geller says. ?The HBC hoped to show how they, as a company, had helped bind Canada together ? connecting Inuit and other northern Aboriginal peoples to traders and city dwellers like the original Winnipeg audience. For the Hudson?s Bay Company, it was a celebration of its history and showed the audience the variety of culture across Canada. And as a document of its time, it is important to recognize how the film is a part of the history of colonization, and both presented and shaped stereotypical views of Aboriginal people.?

The film will be showing at Vancity Theatre in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 31 at 7 pm. Geller and Nikkel will both be attending, and will offer a short Q & A period after the screening.

Being pushed under by a giant wave has long been one of the worst perils faced by big wave surfers like Dorian, and the new wetsuit he was testing claimed to have the answer to this problem. It was called the V1 and was claimed by manufacturers Billabong to be the world's first inflatable wetsuit.

The science behind an inflatable wetsuit could not be simpler. When a surfer finds themselves deep underwater, they simply pull the shoulder-mounted ripcord, which inflates the back-mounted air bladder with a small carbon dioxide cartridge. The surfer doesn't even need to swim, as they can just let the wetsuit take them back to the surface.

Dorian's idea for the wetsuit came about last year after he experienced one of the worst wipeouts of his life, and only narrowly escaped drowning. He wanted a wetsuit which would improve safety for the big wave surfers, and took his suggestion to the manufacturers.

In the course of the research and development phase, a team of military equipment designers were consulted for their knowledge and experience of creating an underwater air bladder. This is quite a common occurrence when designing new products, because the military tend to lead the way in innovation and extreme sports equipment makers tend to follow in their footsteps.

Once the designs were finalized, a prototype of the first inflatable wetsuit was created and then given to Shane Dorian to test, first in calm waters, then in the much more dangerous Cortes Bank area 100 miles off the coast of California.

Through all the tests, the inflatable wetsuit passed with flying colours. When Dorian was pulled under the water following a bad wipeout, he simply pulled the cord and let the wetsuit inflate, carrying him swiftly to the ocean surface.

With a prototype model already successfully tested, all that remains for the manufacturers now is to secure the patent for their design and then bring it to the commercial market. Some experts have already expressed concern however, suggesting that once inflatable wetsuits become widely available, they will encourage surfers to take more risks and be more reckless, relying on the wetsuit to get them out of trouble every time.

Starbucks shares plunge 11% after earnings miss

Starbucks shares were down 11 percent in midmorning trading Friday after the company posted quarterly results that fell short of Wall Street expectations and cut its outlook for the current quarter, citing the challenging global economy.

Starbucks (SBUX) was down $6 to $46.40, giving up all the stock's gains for the year.

"We are concerned that Starbucks experienced its first earnings disappointment in 3-plus years as operating complexity is increasing," analyst?David Tarantino?of Robert W. Baird?wrote in downgrading the stock.?

The Seattle-based coffee giant said profits rose 19 percent in the latest quarter, as global revenue at cafes open at least a year rose 6 percent.

In June and July, however, the company noted that traffic had slowed amid persistently high unemployment and shaky consumer sentiment.

"Traffic trends are noticeably down in many parts of the U.S.," said Troy Alstead, the company's chief financial officer.

In the European market, where Starbucks is struggling to turn around its business, sales were flat.

"Europe has been a challenge for us all year and continues to be," Alstead said. He noted that the flat sales were an improvement from the previous quarter, however, when the figure slipped 1 percent.

A British man who joked on Twitter that he would blow up an airport after it closed because of snow has had his conviction for sending a "menacing" message overturned in a landmark ruling for users of social media websites.

Paul Chambers, 28, had sent the message in what he called a moment of frustration at not being able to catch a flight from Doncaster Robin Hood airport.

He had later been arrested and sentenced but the High Court on Friday upheld his appeal against conviction.

Speaking outside the court afterwards, Chambers' lawyer John Cooper, who had argued it was wrong to associate the tweet with terrorism, said it was a milestone ruling.

"It's a very big decision both nationally and internationally for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who use Facebook and Twitter," he told the BBC.

"It means that if you intend to make a joke and if what you do is a joke, however bad a joke that is, you cannot be prosecuted," he added.

The case revolved around a tweet sent by Chambers to a friend in January 2010, which read: "Crap! Robin Hood Airport is closed. You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high!"

Chambers said he sent the tweet to his 600 followers in a moment of frustration and never imagined it would be taken seriously.

"It was surreal. My world became something else," he said when asked how he felt when he was arrested.

Of Friday's ruling he added: "It's an important decision as far as social networks are concerned and as far as Twitter is concerned.

"It has established that there has to be an action that is menacing and is intended to be menacing."

Chambers' case gained the attention and support of thousands of Twitter users and several high-profile British comedians.

In Friday's High Court ruling, three judges headed by the Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge, allowed Chambers' appeal against a Crown Court judge's decision upholding the 2010 conviction.

They said: "If the person or persons who receive or read it, (the message) or may reasonably be expected to receive, or read it, would brush it aside as a silly joke, or a joke in bad taste, or empty bombastic or ridiculous banter, then it would be a contradiction in terms to describe it as a message of a menacing character."

Katherine Jackson returns home amid family feud rumors | theGrio

Katherine?Jackson is apparently back?home, reuniting with Michael Jackson?s children after a judge temporarily took away her guardianship because of her days-long absence from them.

Paris Jackson tweeted early Thursday morning: ?grandma?s here! (hash)thankyougod.? Katherine?Jackson?s son Marlon also posted a note on Twitter saying his mother had returned, adding she looked and sound great.

On Wednesday, judge removed her as guardian temporarily and named her grandson Tito Joe ?TJ? Jackson as temporary caretaker of the late legend?s three minor children amid a bitter family dispute over Michael Jackson?s estate.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff issued the ruling because she was in Arizona and hadn?t spoken with the children in several days. TJ Jackson now has the ability to control the hilltop home where the children live and to take on other supervision duties.

Katherine?Jackson told ABC News that the court ruling was ?based on a bunch of lies.?

?I am devastated that while I?ve been away, that my children, my grandchildren, have been taken away from me, and I?m coming home to see about that, also,? she said reading from a prepared statement.

She denied the suggestion made in court and in court filings to support TJ Jackson?s appointment that she was being held against her will.

?I am here today to let everybody know that I am fine and I am here with my children, and my children would never do a thing to me like that, holding me against my will,? she said while her children Randy, Janet and Rebbie were seated next to her. ?It?s very stupid for people to think that.?

But on Thursday, Michael Jackson?s son Prince posted a photo of what he said was a group text message involving Rebbie and Janet in which he demanded to contact with his grandmother and Janet allegedly responded: ?Please don?t let them.?

?As long as I can remember my dad repeatedly warned me of certain people and their ways,? Prince Michael tweeted. ?Although I am happy my grandma was returned, after speaking with her I realize how misguided and how badly she was lied to. I ?m really angry and hurt.?

Beckloff said there was no evidence that Katherine?Jackson had done anything wrong but instead it appeared she was being prevented from fulfilling her role as guardian through the ?intentional acts of third parties.? He didn?t elaborate but made the decision after reading court filings in which TJ Jackson expressed concern that Katherine?Jackson was being prevented from returning.

He cited a Monday incident in which Janet, Randy and Jermaine Jackson arrived at the children?s home and told them they could speak with their grandmother but had to leave with them.

?This was odd and disturbing to me and (the children) and heightened our concern that our grandmother was being prohibited from returning home,? TJ Jackson wrote in a sworn statement. The incident turned into a confrontation between two male adults at the house and sheriff?s officials say it remains an ongoing battery investigation.

Beckloff listened as attorneys described Katherine?Jackson?s demeanor as unusual on phone calls placed to the children hours before the hearing.

TJ Jackson?s attorney Charles Shultz also revealed in court filings that the children were forced to miss school Wednesday because of concerns about their security.

Beckloff ruled the Jackson children could not leave California without court approval.

Katherine?Jackson?s attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said after the hearing that he spoke with his client as she was driving back to Los Angeles from Tucson, Ariz., where she had been since July 15.

?She sounded absolutely fine, lucid and her normal self,? he said.

Sanders plans to ask the court to reinstate Katherine?Jackson as guardian of the children when she is back in Los Angeles. He was looking forward to meeting with her in person on Thursday.

The public battle was revealed early Sunday after a relative reported Katherine?Jackson missing, but she was later located safely with other family members in Arizona.

Jermaine Jackson has said his mother was following doctor?s orders to cut off communications with the children, who range in age from 10 to 15. He didn?t provide further details.

In addition to concerns about the safety of Jackson?s children, some of Michael Jackson?s siblings have recently called on the executors of his estate to resign.

Randy Jackson appeared Tuesday on Al Sharpton?s MSNBC show PoliticsNation and said he believes his brother?s will is a fake and that the executors have engaged in criminal activity.

The estate, which recently reported it saw $475 million in gross earnings since Jackson?s death in June 2009, has denied wrongdoing and called the accusations ?false and defamatory.?

Beckloff, who also oversees financial issues affecting Jackson?s estate, was initially reluctant to appoint a temporary guardian but changed his mind after hearing from several attorneys who expressed concern about the family?s problems.

He made the ruling after hearing TJ Jackson?s description of a ?strange? conversation he had with Katherine?Jackson on Tuesday evening.

?I?ve never heard my grandmother talk like that,? he said reluctantly. ?In every way. The sound in her voice. The pauses.?

He said some of her speech sounded slurred and she used words that made him wonder if she was speaking in code.

Her son Marlon echoed those concerns on Twitter, complaining that siblings Janet, Randy and Jermaine were keeping her from him.

The children?s guardian ad litem, Margaret Lodise, said she spoke with the children and the two oldest, Prince and Paris, supported the appointment of a temporary guardian. Lodise did not ask the youngest son, 10-year-old Blanket, for his views.

Lodise is responsible for overseeing the children?s interests in the estate of their father.

Schultz said TJ Jackson didn?t want to replace Katherine?Jackson as permanent guardian. Still, the judge noted that TJ Jackson would have to petition to become the permanent guardian within 48 hours and added that such a petition might not be heard if Katherine?Jackson re-emerges.

Sanders said he would fight any move to have her permanently replaced.

He said he met with Randy and Janet Jackson in Tucson, Ariz., on Tuesday, but he was not allowed to see his client. He said he still hoped the recent events were a misunderstanding, but he described them as ?chaos.?

Economy's growth rate slows in 2nd quarter

The U.S. economy grew at the slowest pace in almost a year between April and June as consumers and businesses succumbed to a raft of worries about jobs, wages, Washington and Europe.

The Commerce Department reported that Gross Domestic Product expanded at a 1.5 percent annual rate in the second quarter, after rising at an upwardly revised 2.0 percent?pace from January to March. Output for the fourth quarter was raised to a 4.1 percent rate from 3.0 percent.

The second quarter's growth rate,?which was in line with economists' expectations, was the slowest since the third quarter of 2011. It raises a big hurdle for President Barack Obama as he battles for re-election in November against Republican challenger Mitt Romney. With only a few months left until the election, voters are already beginning to form strong opinions about the economy that may be hard to shake before they get into the voting booth.

"The economy is struggling to maintain altitude," said Robert Dye, chief economist at Comerica in Dallas.

Consumers spent at the lowest pace in a year as they throttled back on purchasing autos, which helped drive economic growth in the prior two quarters.

Shoppers are wary of spending in an economy that still has not fully recovered from the financial crisis and the recession in late 2007 through mid-2009, with the nation's unemployment rate at 8.2 percent. That reluctance is reflected in retail sales, which contracted in each of the last three months. In addition, wages have been stagnant for years, undermining consumers' willingness to spend.

The economy needs a growth rate of at least 2.0 to 2.5 percent just to keep the employment rate stable, never mind whittling it down.

The weak growth report, flagged by weak data ranging from employment to manufacturing, may raise expectations of a third round of bond purchases, also known as quantitative easing, by the Fed.

The U.S. central bank has already injected $2.3 trillion into the economy through asset purchases and overnight interest rates are near zero, leaving some economists to worry that the Fed does not have enough tools left in its kit.

No major policy announcement is expected at the Fed's two-day meeting next week, but many economists now say the central bank could move when policymakers gather on September 12-13.

Last month, the Fed extended a program to re-weight the bonds it already holds toward longer maturities to hold down borrowing costs.

The economy has been hit by worries of deep government spending cuts and higher taxes scheduled to kick in at the start of 2013, as well as troubles from the debt crisis in Europe.

The biggest factor weighing on the recovery is fear that politicians in Washington would be unable to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff at the turn of the year, economists said.

Recent economic data suggest limited scope for growth to bounce back in the third quarter.

Wall Street and Washington watch consumer spending closely because it accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity. structures.

Living with HIV is sometimes described as a roller-coaster but for me it's more like a marathon or several of them.

Running has been my constant companion, even before my HIV diagnosis in 1994. Back then, my typical run was shorter -- my impatience greater. My exercise routines mimicked the circumstances of my life. Desperate to seize every fleeting moment, I favored short sprints over long, meandering runs. My attention raced to make the most of a young, abbreviated life.

Such pessimism was justified. An estimated 40,000 people died of AIDS in the U.S. the year I was diagnosed -- 50,000 the following year. I was 25 years old.

It's hard to remember what it was like to run -- or even live -- without HIV. What differences did HIV make in my athletic abilities, injuries or recoveries: I shall never know. But the changes brought on by antiretroviral therapy were dramatic.

For years I feared the drugs and delayed therapy as long as I could. To swallow a lifetime, daily reminder of HIV seemed, back then, too much to bear. And I expected disappointments, scarring side effects, drug resistance. In 1996, scientists lauded multi-drug combination therapy as a major breakthrough, but I remained doubtful. I braced for more bad news; I had been let down before.

By 2004, facing a depleted immune system and sapped energy, I relented. Despite some initial side effects, I adjusted well to therapy. My viral load immediately declined to undetectable (i.e., maximum viral suppression) and my immune-system counts reversed their downward spiral.

But most remarkably, I became healthier, stronger, more alert, more alive. Before therapy, catching a cold was a monthly occurrence. And colds readily progressed to fever-filled bronchitis or worse.

Before therapy, getting into a pool meant a sinus infection would surely follow. And running in intrepid weather, rain or cool temperatures was completely out of the question.

With therapy, my world changed. I reached age 35 and kept going. I ran my first of many marathons. I rediscovered running amid the leaves of fall and in the deep freezes of winter. Not only did I conquer the pool, I trained for a triathlon in Lake Michigan!

Today, I face the challenges of most 42-year-old marathoners. Less flexible, less resilient. I sweat excessively and therefore cramp readily. My recoveries take more intentionality than before. But in truth, I'm in the best shape of my life and running faster than ever. I'm faster than most people in my training group. I'm faster than teammates in their 20s.

On the marathon course, I'm chasing a new personal record (3:42 is the time to beat!). And in work and life, I'm chasing new horizons I never thought possible: an end to the HIV/AIDS epidemic for everyone who is or will ever be affected.

I'll ponder these thoughts as I attend the 19th International AIDS Conference this week in Washington, DC, where hope to end this global scourge is dawning.

Conquering AIDS is now not unlike conquering a marathon -- it's a long road, no doubt, but with dedication, perseverance and sheer muscle (the political and fiscal kind) it's imminently doable.

Unless you?re a glutton for punishment you may have started turning off the television of late. Aside from the Obama blip on the horizon, the global news has a limited range of bad, worse and dire. Especially when it comes to the economy.

If you are in business the bad news on TV might be good news for your marketing budget. You?re not the only one turning away from the box. Millions of people are turning online so they have more control over how, where and when they source their information.

Ride the wave of the existing online trend

Communication between companies and consumers, between brands and buyers is shifting away from traditional media to the online world. Television advertising is not going to cease any time soon. However, smart companies are already shifting significant marketing dollars online to initiate different relationships with their customers and be at the forefront of this evolution.

Recent statistics from major international research and audit companies show that spending on internet ads and marketing has soared in the last 12 months.

UK figures reported by Click Through marketing (drawn from Internet Advertising Bureau ? IAB ? and PricewaterhouseCoopers research) point to an increase of 28% in search marketing spending and 16.3% in display ad spending in the first half of 2008.

The increase is in sharp contrast to the overall decline in total UK ad spending of 0.7% (which would have been a total of 4.6% if internet advertising were not included in the figure).

Figures out from the same IAB research show that the USA is following a similar trend. Total internet spending in January-June 2008 was up 15.2% from the same period in 2007.

And as with the UK, overall spending on advertising is in decline. Emarketer research estimates that all of major US forecasters are predicting significant drops in newspaper, magazine, network TV and radio advertising. And while online advertising is tipped to slow slightly from 13.8% growth in 2008 to 13.4% growth in 2009, it is streaks ahead of other media in overall growth.

Okay, everybody?s doing it online ? but why?

According to President and CEO of IAB, Randall Rothenberg, accountability is the single biggest factor influencing companies to shift marketing online. It is almost impossible to measure the impact of a television advertisement or billboard. But online advertising and marketing both have powerful capabilities to track WHO is looking and WHAT action (if any) they are taking in response to ads and campaigns.

Another compelling factor is the different kinds of campaigns that are possible online. The IAB report for second-quarter revenue (U.S) in 2008 shows that search revenue at 44% is way out ahead of banner advertising (21%), followed by classifieds (14%), lead generation (7%) and rich media (7%).

The unique thing about search advertising is that marketers only pay when a user clicks on their link. This creates an immediate and measurable relationship between what they are paying and how well it is working.

Because online campaigns can be targeted and measurable they have the capacity to produce a greater return on investment (ROI) than other media. Companies can easily track how effective campaigns are by including online calls to action. Campaigns can then be adjusted with minimal cost and effort to reflect customer desires and trends.

Going online makes sense for companies who need to trim expenditure. Not only are the up front costs lower (consider the difference in price of a prime time network TV advertisement and a Google AdWord campaign), the results are more transparent.
