T-Mobile calls shared plans 'costly, complicated' - Know Your Cell

AT&T and Verizon both now offer shared data plans?but don't expect T-Mobile to jump on that bandwagon any time soon. T-Mobile said customers don't benefit from these types of plans.?

In an official statement picked up by Droid-Dog, T-Mobile said shared data plans are "costly, complicated and punitive." It's costly because the price of data is going up, complicated because customers have to choose a plan even though many don't know how much data they use and punitive because the data overage rates can really hit a customer's wallet hard.?

Obviously, T-Mobile believes that its approach is better because its plans are more flexible and affordable, and it offers unlimited data plans (with some throttling). T-Mobile definitely is more attractive for those wanting to spend less because you can get a smartphone plan with 2 GB of data for about $60 a month. That's $20-$25 cheaper than the entry-level smartphone price for Verizon or AT&T.?

T-Mobile is still way behind AT&T and Verizon in terms of subscribers and revenues, so it has to make a play for those interested in simplicity and value. It will soon have its own 4G LTE network?and it still gets some nice devices like the Galaxy Note.?

The fourth-largest carrier is still facing many hurdles though, particularly now that it's clearly not going to be acquired by AT&T. It has some spectrum to build out its 4G LTE network but it is way behind Verizon and AT&T. Even Sprint has the jump on T-Mobile when it comes to 4G LTE.?

Going after the value-driven customers may also be a good strategy but it appears like the real revenue moving forward is selling buckets of data to customers and have them split it between devices or with their family. We'll see how T-Mobile adjusts moving forward.?
