The BBQ recipe challenge - inDemand - from PromoCodes.co.uk ...

Posted on by By Carol Martin

The Brits might know how to queue, but do they know how to barbeque? Seeing as the weather has been so lovely these past few days, we thought to share a few family recipes with our readers. Everyone knows how to cook a burger and sausage (or at least they think they do, despite a red rivalling Rudolf?s nose greeting you after the first bite), so instead let?s take a look at a few more unusual offerings on the menu. The rather sweeter options, the side meals that compliment the steaks and burgers.

?

Gourmet Burger - The Windsor

?

The first thing to make sure is that you?ve got to the meat of things. It?s the crux of the BBQ, and top quality meats can be found everywhere from the Gourmet Burger Kitchen (with their new recipe, the Windsor ? an 8oz beef burger) to Waitrose. But that?s the simple bit. We?re here to get more complicated?

?

Banana Fritters

?

Banana Fritters ? There?s no monkeying around when it comes to this barbeque favourite. You?ll desert other desserts, with a souffl? becoming superfluous, a trifle proving trifling, and the pavlova simply a palava, for it really requires no preparation at all. Simply select your chosen banana out of the bowl, or, depending on where you live, off the tree, and throw it onto the grill, turning occasionally, until the skin turns black and hardens. If it doesn?t prove too complicated, you can always make a little insertion along one side of the banana before it goes on, and insert a line of chocolate buttons, then serve the fretless fritter with either ice-cream, cream or a sauce of your choice.

?

Rum Soaked Pineapple

?

Rum Soaked Pineapple ? Remove the skin of a pineapple, do away with the core, and cut into rings. Soak said rings in rum overnight, and cook on the barbeque for three to four minutes either side, before serving with ice-cream, and may we suggest Waitrose?s range of ?Seriously Ice Cream,? currently on offer at two for five pounds. Lastly, if there is any rum remaining (preferably the stuff that soaked the pineapple, but feel free to move onto the bottle at any point) why not prepare a round of Pina Coladas ? not only tropical, but also topical, seeing as you will most definitely get ?caught in the rain.?

?

DIY Potato Wedges

?

DIY Potato Wedges ? most people will cover a potato in tin foil, stick it on the barbeque, and be done with it. Slightly boring, and your guests will be going bananas over their fritter before the potatoes actually finish cooking. Instead, pop a few potatoes into a pan of water, bring to the boil and simmer for approximately fifteen minutes. Now cut them into your average wedge size and shape, brush with vegetable oil (and perhaps a sprinkling of paprika), and cook on the barbeque grill until gold and crispy.

?

Asparagus

?

Asparagus ? once again, simple but effective, as all good barbeque recipes are, for if the sun does finally come out, why waste time in the kitchen? Melt a little butter and oil in the pan, brush this onto the asparagus, and, as the more intuitive may have predicted, pop them onto the barbeque grill and turn occasionally (the asparagus that is, there?s no a requirement for the cook to pivot on the spot). Lastly, a sprinkling or rock salt, or perhaps parmesan cheese, would definitely not go amiss.

?

Pumpkin Chunks

?

Pumpkin Chunks ? a lovely accompaniment to the main course, be it beef, lamb, or pork, though possibly not aubergines, and just as easy to prepare as the previous list entries. Much like the accurate measurements provided for the wedges, cut the pumpkin into your average chunks (this being approximately one and half inches, for the unimaginative). Brush a little oil over the flesh, and pop onto the grill, and, as if there were a running theme to this cooking lark, turn occasionally.

?

So, if this has you salivating, and you either don?t own a barbeque, need to replace your barbeque, or are one of those ?portable? barbeque users, there is the great offer with B&Q, who are so excited about the latest reductions on their gardenware, which includes barbeques (coincidentally), that they are also celebrating a price promise. So, what better time to mention that Argos, too, have somewhat of a sizzling 60% discount offer on barbeques.
