"Mixed martial arts" is also known popularly as ultimate fighting or cage fighting. One is allowed to engage in full contact in this combat sport. Participants of this sport can make use of different skills as well as fighting techniques. Grappling techniques as well as striking is allowed in this sport. The best part of this sport is that it allows fighters from different backgrounds to compete.

Modern mixed martial arts have it roots in the different mixed style contests that took place in the Pacific Rim, Japan, and Europe during the early years of the 20th century. The reason why this sport was started was to discover which martial art was best suited for situations that require real unarmed combat. Rick Blume coined this term in the year 1995. He had founded Battlecade Extreme Fighting, a company that is no longer functioning.

After some changes were made to the rules of mixed martial arts it became very popular and only professional wrestling and boxing seem to rival its pay per view reach popularity. The changes were made so that the competitors were safe and the sport was accepted by the mainstream audience.

There are many types of mixed martial arts. Collegiate wrestling, Muay Thai, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and submission wrestling are some of them.

Collegiate wrestling is a type of wrestling developed in the United States. It is based on the catch-as-catch-can wrestling just like freestyle wrestling. This type of wrestling however is influenced by different types of folk wrestling that came to America that it is now purely American. In this type as well as freestyle wrestling one can use their own legs or the legs of their opponents both in defense as well as in offence.

Muay Thai is a famous combat sport from Thailand. This sport uses a both clinching techniques along with stand-up striking techniques. It is often called the "Science of Eight Limbs". Another name by which it commonly referred is the "Art of Eight Limbs". This sport used knee strikes, kicks, elbow strikes as well as punches that is why the other names were given. The sport allows eight points of contact while the other sports allow only two or a maximum of four. Two contact points meaning fists and four contact points meaning both legs and hands.

Judo is both a combat sport and a martial art that was developed in the year 1882 by Kano Jigoro in Japan. There are different ways one can win in this sport. One can win by either performing a takedown or throw that force the opponent onto the ground. One can win by applying both grappling maneuvers. The purpose of these maneuvers is to immobilize the opponent. Applying chokes, strangle hold, and joint locks on one's opponents in order to force them to submit is also a legal way of winning. One can use their hands and feet to perform strikes and thrusts as well as weapon defenses in Judo, but this is allow in kata (pre-arranged forms). In randori or Judo competitions these are not allowed.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the many sports that were derived from Judo. This sport was started during the first of the 20th century. The practitioner of this sport will be able to defeat opponents who are not only bigger but also stronger than them, provided they make use of the right technique and leverage.
