Historic Church in Owego Holds Fundraiser to Rebuild from 2011 Floods

A church in Owego still recovering from the 2011 flood held a fundraiser Saturday to help with the cost of reconstruction.

The First Baptist Church of Owego held a Chinese Auction with food, music, and face painting. The church has already spent $200,000 rebuilding from the 2011 floods but estimates that it needs at least another $200,000 to reopen.

Nick Wilding, Fundraising Coordinator of the church said he is surprised at how many people have stepped up to help.

"It's actually been a heart warming experience to see how many businesses and individuals have reached out to play a part in this small large or otherwise. Whether it's a business donating or the general public in here to purchase tickets or chicken barbeque or facepainting."

The church will turn 182 years old in September. It was the first church in the country to speak out against slavery.
