MOBILE, Alabama -- In the final days of the Mobile mayoral election, residents backing Mayor Sam Jones packed into the auditorium of Davidson High School early Saturday.

In the nearly-filled room, church leaders lauded the accomplishments of Jones and implored those attending to vote.

?He demonstrated himself to be humble. He has given himself entirely, but no man can do it alone,? said the Rev. Clinton Johnson of New Shiloh Baptist Church. ?I come to inspire you today; I come to call you to action.?

The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity sponsored the assembly in anticipation of the municipal election on Aug. 27. Jones, who was seated on the front row, is up against challenger Sandy Stimpson.

The program featured several speakers, gospel singers and ministers.

Outside, a group of Jones? supporters, often seen wearing ?I heart Sam? T-shirts, handed out stickers before people entered.

Bryan Polk, 30, of west Mobile, was one of them.

?Something is being done every single moment. You have to have that kind of dedication if you care about the candidate that you support,? Polk said. ?We believe he is the best leadership for Mobile.?

The group will be out on Election Day, he said, trying to appeal to as many voters as possible.

?We are going to canvass and get (people) out to the polls,? Polk said. ?We are going to make the votes count. We need Sam.?

Stimpson supporters gathered on Saturday also. They met at Ladd-Peebles Stadium before canvassing on street corners throughout the city.
