SYDNEY - New South Wales Waratahs coach Michael Cheika says Super Rugby referees are making rugby soft by over-reacting to legitimate tackles.
Cheika echoed the views of many coaches in the southern hemisphere competition saying teams might be playing "touch footy" next year if referees continued to penalize normal, physical play.
On Saturday, the coach of the Auckland-based Blues, Sir John Kirwan, severely criticized a decision by referee Chris Pollock to red card Blues flanker Kane Barrett for stomping when even opposing players said the incident was trivial.
Cheika said the sin-binning of hooker John Ulugia for a strong tackle in the Waratahs' 14-12 loss to the Queensland Reds on Saturday wasn't deserved. He said "it's a shame because the hardness is going out of the game."
