Question about soy & breast cancer? | Breast Cancer

Other people asked questions on various topics, and are still
waiting for answer. Would be great if you can take a sec and
answer them

Question about soy & breast cancer?Ok I read somewhere that people don?t really know whether soy hinders or helps the growth of breast cancer cells? I read that it was unpredictable which affect it would have. That doesn?t really make sense to me but I have no way of knowing myself, so I?m wondering if any of you know more about that.

Also, the reason this concerns me is because my mother and my aunt have both had breast cancer, and obviously I don?t want to increase my own risks of getting it since they?re high enough already. I?m lactose-intolerant though and thought about drinking soy milk, but I don?t want to if it may increase my risks.

Thank you!!

Soy products contain phyto estrogens.

Scientific opinion is still split on the effect these have and if they mimic estrogen.

If they do, then it is expected that their use would lower your risk of developing breast cancer but increase the speed at which an estrogen receptive cancer would grow. Not all breast cancers are estrogen receptive.

As you can see, the issue is as clear as mud.

From a personal level, I love dairy products, hate soy, developed breast cancer and am now fine.
Another regular poster who is vegan and eats/drinks soy products has also had breast cancer is also fine now.

Women growing up in Asian countries, such as Japan and China, tend to eat soy throughout their lives, beginning at a young age. Because few non-Asian women have a comparable lifetime exposure to soy in their diets, it is hard to know how these findings apply to non-Asian women. We do not know whether a breast cancer survivor who begins eating large amounts of soy later in life after a cancer diagnosis would get the same benefit from soy. However, the Shanghai study suggests that it is unlikely that dietary soy would be harmful among breast cancer survivors.

If you are a breast cancer survivor, talk to your health care provider about adding soy into your diet before making any major changes. Dr. Wendy Chen, a medical oncologist at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute often discusses this study with her patients when they ask about soy: ?Although we don?t know if soy protein among U.S. women would be protective against breast cancer, this study shows that soy in food form is probably safe for breast cancer survivors.?

I quote this site because a while back there was news of the study, with the only conclusion they could think of, that because asians started consuming soy products at a very young age, it must be protective against cancer. We usually start when older, so it either offers no protection or ?feeds? the growth, mimicking estrogen. Who knows? I eat some dairy, but don?t drink milk and soy juice is disgusting. I have eaten the occasional edamame though.
