Torrey Pines Course To Be Renamed ? Tiger Woods Golf Course.

According to reports one of the famed Torrey Pines courses is going to be renamed ? The Tiger Woods Golf Course.

Torrey Pines boasts two golf courses overlooking the Pacific Ocean and where Woods has won seven times, including earlier this year in capturing the Farmer?s Insurance Open.

Woods is the tournament?s all-time-leading money winner with more than $5.7 million in earnings there and with local San Diegan Phil Mickelson is next at $3 million.

The largest margin of victory ? eight strokes ? belongs to Woods, who also tied the record for lowest tournament total with a 266 in 1999 to match what George Burns did in 1987.

Woods also captured the U.S. Open title in 2008 at Torrey Pines in a dramatic playoff with Rocco Mediate and with his 1-under-par 283 score handed him his third U.S. Open championship.

The first professional tournament in San Diego was at the San Diego Country Club in 1952, and it moved around until 1968, when it landed at Torrey Pines (which has a North and a South course). It has remained there for 46 years.

Tom Weiskopf won the inaugural tournament at Torrey Pines ? Andy Williams was the celebrity host ? with a 273 to earn the $30,000 first prize.

Woods pocketed $1,098,000 for winning this year?s tournament at Torrey Pines.

The course was built in 1957 on the site of Camp Callan, an Army base during World War II.
