Rhode Island gas prices up 9 cents

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Gas prices in Rhode Island have jumped 9 cents in the past week as fuel costs rise around the nation.

The latest survey by AAA Southern New England released Monday says the average cost of a gallon of self-serve, regular in the state is $3.68.

That's 7 cents higher than the national per-gallon average of $3.61. The national average has jumped 14 cents in the past week.

Rhode Islanders were paying an average of $3.54 a gallon a year ago at this time.

The AAA says the increase is due to increased summer driving as well as continuing tensions in the Middle East.
