Mumbai--Laboratory Gemological Science International (GSI) has adopted a stretch of road here as a way to give back to the local community while jump-starting a widespread street-cleaning effort.

On Aug. 8, GSI employees and Mumbai city employees used brooms to clean Turner Road in the city?s Bandra neighborhood, a major jewelry street.

GSI?s Vice President for Indian Operations Neeta Shah was the one who developed the idea for the lab to adopt a street. Shah wants it to be the first step in a nationwide campaign to clean and beautify the streets of India.

?We at GSI have a strong tradition of giving back to the community,? Shah said. ?We?re very active in trade organizations in all of our locations worldwide. However, I believe in giving back not only to and through our industry but beyond this. I love our beautiful country, and there?s much we can do to make it better.?

Shah acknowledged the city of Mumbai and its employees for their support, along with city jewelers including Tara Jewelers, Gehna Jewellers, A.K. Motiwala, Orra Jewellers and A.A. Motiwala.

Shah and GSI CEO Mark Gershberg plan to work with local jewelry associations across the country to create similar campaigns.

GSI is a full-service laboratory based in New York?s Diamond District. It has offices in Mumbai, Ramat Gan and Antwerp.
