College Greats: Vince Carter ? the best college dunker of all-time

David Astramskas November 16, 2012

Champs Sports is giving away $15k in college cash for college, a trip for two to the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando and $1,500 in Champs sports gift cards. ? In honor of those heading to college, Ballislife looks back at some of our favorite college players. ? To kick it off, we go to North Carolina where we had a giant pool to choose from including the GOAT but we are going with the Greatest College Dunker of All-Time in Vince Carter!

No titles. ?2nd team All-Amercian honors. ?Modest numbers like 16 points per game. ?So what was so special about the McDonalds All-American and future #5 NBA pick and Rookie of the Year? ? How about the most inbound and reverse alley oops, windmills, 360s and off the backboard dunks ever from a college player and a couple dunks on college great Tim Duncan too!

During those years in the mid to late 90s when the Bulls were going for their second 3 peat , I ranked Vince Carter as one of the top 3 can?t miss on TV players alongside Penny Hardaway in Orlando and Michael Jordan. ?The only thing that was preventing Vinsanity from putting up monster numbers to match his monster dunks was Dean Smith who also had Antawn Jamison, Shammond Williams and Ed Cota on the roster. Vince also ?had a few injuries his freshman year that stole atleast five dunks that would of made ESPN?s Plays of the Week montages from the 90s. ? But just like his shortened 50 game rookie season, it didn?t take full seasons to realize how great Vince Carter was.

Like most NBA players that went to college for more than a year as opposed to a 1 year pit stop between high school and the NBA, Vince Carter is more proud to represent his alma matter than any NBA team and last year he donated $2.5 million to the Carolina Basketball Family Fund. ?The donation was the largest in the school?s history.

?My days as a Carolina student, both pre-NBA and during the summers after I was drafted, will always be special to me,? ?It goes without saying that I am a Tar Heel. For several years, I have been thinking about something I could do to leave a legacy at UNC. Lettermen?s Lane is a perfect fit.? ? Vince Carter
