Low Maintenance Dogs | Dog Breed, Pets

Low Maintenance Dogs

There really isn?t any such thing as low maintenance dogs, all dogs need tons of love and attention, regular visits to the vets? office, fresh air, walks, play time and great nutritious means to live a long and happy life and be a wonderful companion and housemate.? If you are not ready to provide basic essentials and the time required, please think twice about bringing a puppy or an adult dog into your home.

That being said, there are breeds of dogs that have low energy levels compared to others.? Surprisingly the greyhounds are one such breed.? Greyhound rescue programs are a great way to find a quiet and extremely gentle pet and to save a life in the process. Yes, greyhounds are considered a larger dog breed and they can run and sprint ? but through special greyhound shelters, these ex-racers are more than happy to spend the rest of their days being your companion as a lazy couch potato!? Although a 20 minute daily walk is necessary and appreciated.? Also, grooming is extremely easy and low maintenance because of their very short hair.

Short haired breeds of dogs are low maintenance in the grooming category as they would not have to go to a professional groomer every month.? A Basset Hound or Beagle are dog breed with minimal grooming needs, and because of their small size and disposition, make great indoor pets.? They are very content snuggling on the couch with you.

A Boston terrier is another short hair breed that does not need professional grooming services, but does need to be brushed to keep skin and fur healthy and to remove any debris.? A Boston terrier is small dog, ranging between 15 and 25 pounds, which makes them a perfect dog for apartment living.? They are very loyal and fun dogs and with some patience and time, your terrier will learn to perform a lot of tricks.? The Boston terrier?s intelligence not only makes teaching this dog a new trick much easier; and housebreaking and obedience training should be a piece of cake.

Although daily exercise is required (and should be a given for every type of dog breed), the Boxer is also considered a low maintenance breed because their hair is very short so that grooming is of little consequence.? Boxer breeds can weigh up to 70 pounds ? certainly making this particular breed no light weight.? They make great family pets as long as basic training of an obedience nature is instilled at a very young age.

If you are looking for amore exotic dog breed, Shiba?s are referred to as the dog for cat lovers.? They have plush fur that is remarkably easy to groom;however they do shed seasonally ? so that might put these animals in the high maintenance category if this is something that bothers you.? If you allow it, they will walk for hours ? this could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on how much you enjoy walking your dog, and of course getting the benefits of a healthy round of exercise and fresh air.? This breed is very easy to train and barks very little, which makes for an ideal roommate in very small apartments.

I personally love big dogs, but do to the drooling and the slobbery maintenance involved with a Mastiff and St. Bernard; they would not make the top of my list of low maintenance dogs.

In your mind does low maintenance mean the same as easy to train?? If so, then a Beagle is not the breed of dog you are looking for.? Beagles are strong willed and independent minded and they have a very sensitive snout which easily distracts them from staying focused during training.? Rat Terriers and Jack Russels are a better choice as they are smart and much easier when it comes to obedience training; they are small and have short hair for easy grooming.

Pugs are an all around low maintenance type of dog, they are small (maximum weight is about 25 pounds) with a short coat and they love to curl up on your lap for an afternoon siesta.

If you are unsure of the type of dog you might want ? join a fostering community.? Many dogs need interim foster homes until they find a permanent residence and it gives you the opportunity to see if caring for a dog is something you are ready to commit to full time.

There is a good possibility that health issues with older dogs will increase; but compared to a puppy, older dogs are more low key ? low maintenance dogs.

Check out the American Kennel Club (www.akc.org) to learn more about each dog breed in detail.? Visit this site only after you have decided what YOU consider to be low maintenance dogs.
