Real Estate Pro of the Week: Jene' Green of Kona, Hawaii

When the statewide director of sales at one of Hawaii?s most prestigious real estate firms says that a certain agent is ?probably one of the most interesting people that I know,? it?s a pretty big deal. But, then again, so is the agent, Jene? Green.

This week's real estate pro is agent Jene' Green of Kona, HawaiiRaised on the Big Island of Hawaii, in south Kona, Green agrees that leaving Hawaii is akin to tearing a scab off your body. It hurts, and no matter how long you stay away, it doesn?t ever feel better.

Green and Trey, her high-school sweetheart, were married right after they graduated and then moved to Arizona where they spent three years. While many mainlanders claim they could never live on an island, living ?landlocked? drove both of them crazy, so they went home.

How to Lose 200 Pounds

Losing weight is never easy, but in Green?s case, it was either that or death.

?In 2009 my father ? my best friend ? passed away. I?d spent three years taking care of him and really didn?t pay attention to myself during that time. After his death I realized I was pushing 350 pounds,? she explains.

?I was really sick and I didn?t even know it. I was having blackouts; I had dizziness, headaches, lethargy ? so many different things,? Green continues.

After a series of doctor visits and tests, with no definitive answers, Green visited an eye doctor. She thought maybe the headaches meant she needed glasses. ?The eye doctor said the muscles behind my eyes were atrophying. She said I had a 25 percent chance of living and that I was going to go blind and then die,? Green said.

?Obviously, she didn?t know me because nobody tells me what I?m going to do, especially when it comes to living,? she continued. After more tests, ?lots and lots of tests, it came out that I had something called pseudotumor cerebri,? Green explained. ?What that is, basically, is your body and your brain thinks that you have tumors. They?re not really there but you have all the symptoms and reactions of having brain tumors.? Doctors, as they usually do, wanted to try all sorts of remedies, including putting a shunt in her head.

Instead, Green and her husband performed extensive research on the disease and studied other people suffering from it. They learned that one of the best things a person with the disease can do is lose weight. They also found out that patients who went on an anti-inflammatory diet found relief from the symptoms. So, the Greens became vegan.

?We also started exercising,? she explained. ?Within two weeks of changing our diet I had lost over 20 pounds. Pretty much all my symptoms were gone within one month,? Green continued.

?My husband has lost 100 pounds, just trying to help me. He is now a vegan bodybuilder. We work out together five to seven days a week,? said Green. ?I?m down to about 150 to 160. I still have a good 20 to 25 pounds I want to lose, and I?m working on it,? she said. ?I?m smaller than I was in high school,? Green explained and added with amazement, ?To not have to shop in the plus size section is crazy to me. It?s such a blessing to be alive and not worry.?

What she credits most for her amazing physical and health transformation, though, are the two annual hikes she and her husband take. ?Every year we hike from Waipio Valley to Waimanu Valley (about a 25 mile round-trip). It?s one of the hardest hikes, super strenuous. It?s amazingly gorgeous though,? Green explained. ?I carry 50 to 60 pounds on my back and he carries 70 to 80. This hike is actually what helped me change my life,? she said.

The Greens? other annual pilgrimage is to Volcano National Park, through the desert to Halape, the ?most amazing white sand beach where we camp out,? she explained.

From Hawaiian Idol to HGTV

The 50th state has its own version of American Idol, called Hawaiian Idol. Green, an incredible singer, took second place one year on the show. ?Singing is my relief,? she said. ?It makes me feel so free.?

All of us, Andy Warhol claimed, will get 15 minutes of fame in our lives. Some, like Jene? Green, get more. When the people at HGTV decided to do a homebuying series set in Hawaii, they called on, and eventually named the show after, Hawaii Life, the brokerage Green works with.

They ended up choosing Green for some of the shoots they did on the Big Island. ?I provided them with some clients. The show has been airing over and over. I can?t even tell you what a neat experience it is to be on TV. They?ve asked for a second season and I?ll be on that as well,? she said.

She Sells Real Estate Too, By the Way

On track to reach her goal of going from $3 million in sales to $10 million this year, Green feels like she has finally found the solution to consistent production. ?I think that putting all my energy in the right places, which is really what I?ve been trying to do, and helping all these people and creating referrals has made this year the best yet, and it?s only the end of February,? she said.

Last year, Green closed 32 transactions on her own, with no staff to assist her. This year, she has her husband on board, a transaction manager, and she just brought on another agent to help her cover the island.

Outside of her career and her showbiz stints, Green has an equally busy life. She and her husband are part of a team of parents who coach the local youth soccer teams ?a couple times a week,? she said. ?Saturday, all day long, I referee and coach teams during soccer season.?

At the end of a long workweek, though, if you?re lucky enough to be in Hawaii, you?ll find Green at Honomolino Bay, a secluded beach on the Big Island?s southwestern shore. ?I?ll be lying in a hammock with my feet up, watching my kids playing in the ocean,? she confesses. ?Literally, you will find me there every Sunday.?

Green describes a typical weekend: ?The hammock is in the coconut trees, [there?s] no phone on me and no one is on the beach, the whales are slapping their tails, the dolphins are jumping, and my kids [are] just running around, loving life. That?s where you?ll find me at the end of a long workweek.?

If you?re feeling just a smidge envious, she has a tip for you: ?You don?t have to be rich to live in Hawaii; you just have to want it.?
