Bedford High sports roundup

At the mid-point of the regular season, the Bedford High boys hockey team has begun to separate from the pack, raising its record to 5-3-2. Bedford has won three out of their last four games. All four games ended in a one-goal differential.?

?We have to rely on our seniors in these tight games,? said Bedford High head coach Mark Fontas. ?They have been there before and our opponents know those players can change the game on any one shift.?

Matt Judge was in the net for the return match up with Rockport on a freezing cold night in Gloucester. After fighting back from a 3-1 deficit, Bedford took a 5-3 lead, scoring two quick goals at the beginning of the third period. Rockport would come back to tie, but Bedford?s senior combo of Sean Isnor and Anthony Lespasio combined for the game-winner. Sophomore Jake Citrano had a goal in the comeback effort.

Next up was Wayland, the team that ended Bedford?s season in last year?s state tournament.? Fans packed The Edge and both teams played a high-energy game. Emotions may have gotten the better of Bedford as they took 12 penalties during the course of the game allowing Wayland to stay close and take the lead in the third period. Bedford would tie the game late only to lose with less than one second left in the game.

?Even though it was a terrible turn of events for us we still have a lot of hockey left to play. For a team like ours; the breaks will even out over the season,? said Fontas.

The team would then face Division 2 opponent North Andover coached by former Bedford coach Peter Marfione.? Senior goalie Abe Grainger had his best game of the season as North Andover came out firing and took an early lead. Bedford would turn the tide on goals by Brendan Flynn, Matt Piccirillo and Sean Isnor to take a 3-1 lead.? North Andover would not quit and came back to tie things at 3-3. Anthony Lespasio then took control scoring twice and Bedford skated off with a 5-4 win.

It was back to league play as the team met undefeated Lowell on their home rink. Ethan Miller caught a nice pass off the boards, which led to Bedford?s first goal by Matt Piccirillo with an assist to Lespasio. Bedford would have a 3-2 lead going in to the final minute on two goals by Lespasio. With seconds remaining and Lowell pulling their goalie for the extra skater, goalie Andrew Spaulding came up big with a kick save to preserve the win.

?I like where we are right now,? said Fontas, ?The win against Lowell keeps the Division within our sights. There is nothing stopping us from repeating as league champions.?

Swimming

The Bedford High boys swimming team traveled to Boston Latin and were narrowly defeated by the host team, 89-80.

Earning first-place finishes for the Bucs included: Marty Goldschmidt (200 IM, 2:45.37), Jason Vafiades (100 butterfly, 1:03.75; 500 free, 5:57.38) and PJ Manning (100 backstroke, 1:12.35).

The 400 fresstyle relay team of Joey Towle, Ben Kaplan, PJ Manning and Jason Vafiades was also victorious.

Other best times included: Nate Presti (200 free, 2:32.94; 500 free, 7:11.22), Andrew Shpyrko (50 free, 26.81; 100 free, 1:03.22), Jackson Pitner (50 free, 28.97) and Jared Olmeda (100 backstroke, 1:24.22).

On the girls side, the Lady Bucs were allowed to swim unofficially (not scoring points), and Olivia Jameson set a new Bedford High record in the 100 butterfly. Jameson?s time of 1:03.84 eclipsed the previous record of 1:04.50 set in 1976 by Sabrina Cronen.

Track

Both the Bedford High boys and girls track teams are still searching for their first victories of the year after falling to Boston Latin last Wednesday at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.

On the boys side, Sam Bradford ran the mile in 4:35.8 to earn second-place honors and Alton Barbehenn ran the 1,000 in 2:45.81 to earn first-place honors. Barbehenn also qualified for the Division 4 State Meet.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Sam Bradford, Steve Frazier, James Burnett and Alton Barbehenn won with a time of 3:39.35.

On the girls side, Erin Dietz earned a first place finish in the 1,000 as her time of 3:05.23 was good enough for a new Bedford High school record. Elliana Boebel also took home first-place honors as she won the shot put event with a throw of 31-1.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Kristen Green, Taylor Fronk, Natalie Huggins and Jenessa McCabe finished ahead of the pack.

?From a scoring standpoint, it was a little disappointing not to come away with a win, but that is often the fate of a relatively small track team,? said Bedford High head coach Joe Pike. ?We just don?t have depth across the whole spectrum of events.?

The boys are currently 0-3 while the Lady Bucs fell to 0-4.
