New Apple TV revealed by the FCC is not smaller and only includes minor component changes

New Apple TV revealed by the FCC is not smaller and only includes minor component changesYesterday, the FCC published details on a new Apple TV that appeared to be smaller than the current Apple TV third generation. This information led to widespread speculation that a new model of Apple TV was about to arrive with new features too. Unfortunately it appears that this is not the case, the dimensions will remain the same but the internal components will be subject to just minor changes. The Verge managed to get a statement from Apple to explain the confusion.

We sometimes make component changes which require an updated model number for regulatory approval. The component changes we made don't affect product features and Apple TV customers will continue to have the same great user experience.

It had been rumored that the internal component change could be the addition of the A5x processor; before we will know if this is the case, we will have to wait for someone to crack one open and take a look inside as Apple is not giving out any more details. Either way, the experience and look of this updated Apple TV will be exactly the same as it was before.

Google Offers Phone Notifications for Suspicious Activity, Here's How to Enable Them

Google Offers Phone Notifications for Suspicious Activity, Here's How to Enable ThemIf a hacker gets access to your Gmail account, the results could be disastrous. Google has long notified users via email if their account passwords have been changed or there's a suspicious login attempt, but now you can also set up phone alerts.

You'll find this recently added feature under your Accounts > Security page. To get the text message alerts, add your mobile phone number and just check the two notification boxes. You'll get a one-time verification code on your phone to finish setting this up.

The added phone alert may be more immediate for you, especially if you're not always accessing your email. If you get a notification about sign in attempts or password changes you didn't make, the notification email and text message will tell you what to do next to secure your account.

Note that this feature doesn't appear to be available for Google Apps users yet.

Finally, above all else, make sure you have the most important security setting enabled for your account: two-factor authentication.

Study Finds Placebo Works as Well as Pills for Migraines in Children

A study published in the new issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics on Monday has found that placebo medications appear to work nearly as well at relieving migraines in children as migraine-specific medication itself. The study looked at 21 different randomized trials that each pitted placebo medications against two or more migraine-specific medications.

The researchers who conducted this analysis of the previous trials concluded that there were very few medications on the market that actually appeared to help children coping with migraines. That held true whether the migraines occurred daily or were episodic.

Here is some of the key information that emerged on Monday regarding migraine medications and kids.

* According to the JAMA Pediatrics report, 20 of the trials that were analyzed dealt with the effect of medication on episodic migraines in children, while one additional study looked at the effect of medication on chronic daily migraines in children.

* The researchers conducting the analysis found that many of the current medications given to combat episodic migraines -- including clonidine, flunarizine, pizotifen, propranolol, and valproate -- had no effect at all on such migraines in children and adolescents.

* The only drugs that did seem to prove effective in treating episodic migraines, topiramate and trazodone, only appeared to reduce the number of headaches a child or adolescent experienced by one a month.

* For children and adolescents that have chronic daily migraines, the placebo showed more effectiveness in reducing the number of those headaches than any medication currently on the market.

* Researchers expressed their dismay at the findings, as did other health professionals. Dr. Jennifer Bickel, a neurologist who specializes in headaches at the Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Mo., told Reuters on Monday that "parents should be aware that our medication choices aren't as good as they should be."

* Bickel also noted that doctors have no choice but to prescribe children headache medications that have proven effective for adults with migraines, because there are none for children or adolescents on the market.

* According to a report by Bloomberg on Monday, as many as 1 in 20 children get at least occasional migraines. That percentage equals out to some 8 million children in the United States.

* The authors of the JAMA Pediatrics study stated in their conclusion that the high rate of effectiveness of placebo medications indicates that more research is needed.

* William Rodriguez, who is the Pediatric Science Director at the Food and Drug Administration's Office of Therapeutic Pediatrics, told Bloomberg in an email on Monday that part of the problem is monetary, and that "a failed pediatric trial seldom motivates a sponsor to conduct more pediatric trials." Therefore, diseases and medications in children and adolescents are rarely researched at the level reserved for those same diseases and medications in adults.

USCCB, in Supreme Court briefs, defends marriage as union of man ...

CWN - January 30, 2013

As the Supreme Court considers the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has filed briefs in their defense.

Arguing in defense of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the USCCB brief noted that

there is no fundamental right to marry a person of the same sex. Such a claim must be rejected because it does not satisfy the test to which this Court adheres in determining whether an asserted right is fundamental. Specifically, civil recognition of same-sex relationships is not deeply rooted in the Nation?s history and tradition?quite the opposite is true. Nor can the treatment of such relationships as marriages be said to be implicit in the concept of ordered liberty, such that neither liberty nor justice would exist if they were sacrificed ? This Court?s decisions describing marriage as a fundamental right plainly contemplate the union of one man and one woman.

The USCCB brief also argued that ??sexual orientation? is not a classification that should trigger heightened scrutiny,? as discrimination on the basis of sex or race would. Homosexual behavior ?is not a trait attributable from conception or birth,? the brief states, adding:

Elevation of sexual orientation to a quasi-suspect class would immerse federal courts into a quagmire of family law issues reserved to the states, issues for which the Judicial Branch is not institutionally suited ? Application of heightened scrutiny would hinder the ability of legislatures to create accommodations for those with religious or moral objections to homosexual conduct.

?The claim that homosexual persons today have ?no ability to attract the attention of the lawmakers? is frivolous,? the brief added.

The brief concluded:

If this Court were to conclude that the Constitution requires a redefinition of marriage to include persons in same-sex relationships?a requirement that we believe cannot reasonably be inferred from the Constitution?it is unclear where the logical stopping point would be. This Court will ultimately be asked why other interpersonal relationships are not entitled to similar inclusion, and why other ?barriers? to marriage (such as those posed by youth, kinship, or multiplicity of parties) should not also have to be struck down as inconsistent with this redefinition.

In its defense of Proposition 8 ? the 2008 California ballot initiative defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman ? the USCCB argued that

first, as a matter of simple biology, the union of one man and one woman is the only union capable of creating new life. Second, the People of California could reasonably conclude that a home with a mother and a father is the optimal environment for raising children, an ideal that Proposition 8 encourages and promotes. Given both the unique capacity for reproduction and unique value of homes with a mother and father, it is reasonable for a State to treat the union of one man and one woman as having a public value that is absent from other intimate interpersonal relationships.

?Proposition 8 is not rendered invalid because some of its supporters were informed by religious or moral considerations,? the brief continued. ?Many, if not most, of the significant social and political movements in our Nation?s history were based on precisely such considerations.?

?The current debate specifically concerns the meaning of marriage and the proposal to redefine marriage, not the phenomenon of same-sex attraction and the persons who experience such attraction,? the brief added. ?For this reason, the suggestion that opposition to the redefinition of marriage is equivalent to an animus against people who experience same-sex attraction is particularly offensive and plainly wrong ? The further suggestion that opposition to homosexual conduct is simply animus against persons who engage in such conduct is also erroneous and offensive.?

Disabled men in Bosnia want prostitution legalized

(AP) ? Members of a Bosnia wheelchair basketball club are launching a campaign to legalize prostitution in the country to help disabled people "achieve their right to love."

Marinko Umicevic, president of the club Vrbas, said Wednesday that Bosnia had to catch up with 21st century Europe, where he said some people with disabilities "even get state subsidies to pay for sex."

Umicevic said some of his players had never had sex and legalizing the sex trade would help people like them achieve their basic rights. Club members were organizing a petition on the proposal in Banja Luka.

Along the same theme, Helen Hunt received an Oscar nomination this year for best supporting actress for her portrayal of a sex worker helping a disabled man in the movie "The Sessions."

Warning over sports aid after marathon death

A coroner has warned of the dangers of a legal stimulant as it emerged that a runner who collapsed and died during the London mara-thon had taken the drug in a bid to boost her performance.

Claire Squires (30), above, suffered a cardiac arrest a few hundred metres from the finish line.

An inquest heard that she had bought a powder supplement called Jack3d which contained DMAA (dimethylamine), a drug with similar properties to amphetamines and is said to boost energy, concentration and metabolism.

Her boyfriend, Simon van Herrewege, told Southwark Coroner's Court that she bought it online as she was keen to beat her personal best race time.

Facebook investors react ... on Twitter

Facebook beat fourth-quarter earnings and revenue estimates, and improved mobile ad sales, but investors weren't all that impressed.

Facebook (FB) stock tanked 10% within minutes in after-hours trading following the earnings release. But the stock nearly fully recovered before edging lower again as CEO Mark Zuckerberg, CFO David Ebersman and COO Sheryl Sandberg answered questions from analysts on a conference call. Shares were down 4% at the conclusion of the call, trading just below $30 a piece. Facebook finished the day's regular trading up almost 1.5% to $31.24.

The results and the stock reaction lit up that other big social networking site: Twitter.

Revenue from mobile advertising represented about 23% of total ad revenue during the fourth quarter, the company said. That's an improvement from 14% in the third quarter. Prior to that, Facebook had practically no mobile revenue.

Though mobile advertising revenue increased, the growth of mobile users slowed. During the fourth quarter, monthly active users of Facebook's mobile app rose by 57%, down from a 61% growth rate in the third quarter and 67% in the second quarter.

Still, Zuckerberg cemented the social network's direction, noting that "there is no argument today. Facebook is a mobile company." And he thinks that's a really good thing.

But some users quipped that Facebook's ad strategy could impact the overall user experience of the social network.

While Facebook didn't provide formal guidance for the year, Ebersman warned that the company's expenses will rise throughout the year as it expands its workforce.

Ebersman also noted that Instagram, which Facebook purchased last year for $1 billion, is continuing to grow rapidly.

Zuckerberg was also optimistic about the site's newer features, including Gifts and Graph Search, but doesn't expect them to be big money makers right away.

Also during the call, Zuckerberg reiterated that the company isn't building a phone, and revealed some interesting details about the company's relationships with Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL).

Though Zuckerberg and team continued to stress the the company has improved and remains focused on its mobile strategy, Facebook shares declined 4% Wednesday evening.

But some investors are willing to sleep on it and wait to see how the stock performs Thursday.

Cross-racial teaching studied

Kelly Sassi, assistant professor in the School of Education and English department, and Amy Carpenter Ford, an assistant professor from Central Michigan University, co-wrote the article, "Authority in Cross-Racial Teaching and Learning: (Re)considering the Transferability of Warm Demander Approaches."?

The article compares a white teacher's approach to authority with that of an African American "warm demander," a style of teaching that includes assertive discipline, caring relationships and congruent interactional styles.?

Ethnographic methods and discourse analysis illuminated how an African American teacher grounded her authority with African American students in shared culture, history and frame of reference. A comparative analysis makes visible what white teachers need to do differently to establish cross-racial authority with African American students, such as prioritize interpersonal relationships, communicate in culturally congruent ways, link care with justice, develop a critical race consciousness, ally with students and critique curriculum.?

The article offers a reconceptualization of the warm demander relevant for white teachers. It was published in Urban Education in December.?

Sassi also published a book review of "Beloved Child: A Dakota Way of Life," which was published in the winter 2012 issue of Tribal College Journal.?

The author of the book, Diane Wilson, explores the meaning of the Dakota "hunka," or beloved child ceremony, as a counterpoint to historical trauma. One of the stories in the book is that of Clifford Canku, NDSU professor of practice. The book was published in 2011 by Borealis Books.?

Are you cut out to run an online business? | Internet Psychologist ...

Self employment success characteristicsMillions of people run businesses online; indeed millions more run a website whilst holding down a full-time job in a bid to gain extra income. However, the vast majority of online businesses fail to achieve the expectations of their owners. Besides, there are an almost countless plethora of dormant business websites, where the owner started full of enthusiasm but gave up after a while.

One of the issues with running a business is personality. There are some people who are cut out to run their own online business ? and other who simply will find it more difficult.

Research on self-employment or running a home-based business has been fairly consistent over the years. Ultimately the studies find that there is no single personality type associated with self-employed business success. There are lots of different types of people who seem to make a go of running their own business.

However, there are a few characteristics which do seem to be quite important.

1. Curiosity
People who are curious tend to stick at self-employment for much longer than those who are not always poking their nose into things?! The problem for the curious individual and the online world is that curiosity can take you off track; you?ll get side-tracked into fascinating blogs and social networking discussions. So curiosity can help you run your online business for longer than people who are not so curious, but it can be a negative influence on the success of your work because it helps you lose focus.

2. Independence
The individual who has a strong sense of independence is the kind of person who sticks at self-employment for longer. In fact, an independent streak makes it much more difficult for people to be employed. They dislike being told what to do, they don?t want to follow a set pattern or rules and they want to be in control. None of that makes it good for them to have a boss?! But independence online can also be a problem; instead of doing things the way that works, independent people frequently want to do things ?their? way, which means a lot of ?re-inventing the wheel? happens, wasting time of the self-employed person.

3. Tenaciousness
The self-employed person who succeeds tends to have a tenacious streak. They don?t let go or give up easily. This is essential for someone running their own business because it means they keep ?at it? until they succeed. But once again, this can also be a problem for the online business owner who ends up being so tenacious trying to get some piece of online software to achieve something they spend fruitless (and wasted) hours in their attempts.

These are the three key characteristics which research shows will help you succeed in self-employment. But online you need to be constantly aware of the potential negative consequences these aspects of personality may have on your potential for achievement.

Purported iPad mini-like iPad 5 casings leak

Purported iPad mini-like iPad 5 casings leak

Again, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the next-generation iPad 5 may be adopting the design cues of the iPad mini. With that in mind, 9to5Mac has scored some pictures of what just might be the back casing for the black Wi-Fi + 3G model.

Today, we received an unverified image from a purported China-based iPad accessories maker, an industry that seems to frequently tip off Apple?s future product designs, of the back plate for the next iPad.

I've already gone over the background for why this design makes sense, but also what technological hurdles still need to be overcome to make it a reality.

One of the pictures is up top. Check out the rest via the link below.

China urged to face Philippines at UN tribunal

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- A senior U.S. lawmaker meeting with Philippine officials said Tuesday that China should agree to face the Philippines before a U.N. arbitration tribunal to avoid a possible crisis over their long-raging territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

The Philippines took a daring legal step last week when it notified China that it will challenge Beijing's claims to virtually the entire South China Sea in a case before an arbitration tribunal under the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. China has not issued a formal response, but its ambassador to Manila, Ma Keqing, has reiterated Beijing's "indisputable sovereignty" over the contested region.

Rep. Ed Royce, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Washington takes no sides in the territorial conflicts but backs an internationally accepted diplomatic solution.

"It is best that China joins the process so that we can move forward under international law," the California Republican told The Associated Press after meeting Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario and other diplomats in Manila.

"We want to calm the tensions," Royce said. "We want this approached from the standpoint of diplomacy, and that is what we are conveying because in that way we don't create crisis which roils the markets or creates uncertainty."

Royce is leading a six-member U.S. congressional delegation in meetings with President Benigno Aquino III and other Philippine officials before traveling to Beijing on Wednesday as part of a tour of Asia, where America has been trying to reassert its presence after focusing on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

China, the Philippines and four other countries have overlapping claims across the vast South China Sea. Beijing claims it has sovereignty over virtually all of the region, which may be rich in oil and gas and is home to some of the world's busiest shipping sealanes.

Chinese paramilitary ships confronted Philippine vessels last year in a monthslong standoff over a disputed shoal. China has effectively controlled the shoal since June, when Manila withdrew its ships as a typhoon approached.

There are fears that territorial conflicts in the region, including a dispute between Japan and China in the East China Sea, could spark Asia's next armed conflict.

Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Cuisia said del Rosario and other Philippine diplomats told the U.S. delegation that Manila decided to bring its disputes with China to international arbitration after other diplomatic steps failed, including an effort to get the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations involved in finding a solution.

In its case against China, the Philippines listed several aggressive moves it alleged were launched by China in recent years to fortify its territorial claims, including the occupation of South China Sea islands and the enactment this month of a Chinese law that allows Chinese patrol vessels to intercept, detain or expel foreign ships passing through vast stretches of waters that Beijing claims.

The Philippines specifically sought an end to Chinese occupation and activities on eight reefs and shoals and surrounding waters, including Mischief Reef, which China occupied in 1995, sparking fierce protests from Manila and concern from Southeast Asian nations.

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? The Netherlands' Queen Beatrix says she will abdicate her throne in April to make way for her eldest son, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander. Here are some questions and answers about the Netherlands' House of Orange and how it's a little different than, for instance, the British monarchy.

A DUTCH MONARCH CAN JUST UP AND QUIT?

Absolutely. Unlike in Britain, where Queen Elizabeth holds religious titles and seems to see it as her duty to rule until she is no longer able, the Dutch monarch is more or less a government job. The queen or king is the head of state and falls under the purview of the prime minister. Queen Beatrix is turning 75, and she's been in office for 33 years. There's really nothing in the way of her stepping down to enjoy her immense personal wealth and her hobbies, which include skiing and horseback riding.

WILL SHE BE MISSED?

There are a few republicans who want the monarchy abolished. But the large majority of Dutch ? probably even most republicans ? like the queen and think she has handled her job with grace and dedication. She has been part of Dutch lives for a generation, through national tragedies and triumphs. In casual conversation, people refer to her simply as "Bea." As former Prime Minister Wim Kok put it, when he heard the news she was stepping down: "I got goose bumps. You know it's coming, but still, it's the end of an era." Beatrix's abdication speech drew 7 million viewers out of a population of 16.8 million ? close to the 8 million who watched the soccer World Cup final the Dutch lost in 2010.

WHO'S THE NEW KING?

That would be Crown Prince Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand. The Dutch informally call him "Wim-Lex," which is a step up from "Prince Pilsner," the nickname the tabloids gave him during his boozy university days.

Willem-Alexander's image improved as he became a family man with three young daughters and developed a career as a diplomat and water management expert. The prince's wife, Argentine investment banker Maxima Zorreguieta, is probably more popular than he is.

In line with the professional attitude of the Dutch monarchy, Willem-Alexander has served on various international water management boards, while soon-to-be Queen Maxima has been involved in promoting microfinance projects in developing countries.

WHAT'S HE GOT THAT I HAVEN'T GOT?

Apart from the wealth and titles he inherited by accident of birth, Willem-Alexander can: pilot jet planes, skate a 200-kilometer marathon along frozen canals in sub-zero weather conditions, and run the New York marathon. The 45-year-old has served on a U.N. advisory panel and been a member of the International Olympic Committee ? a job he regretfully quit Tuesday because it could conflict with his kingly duties.

SO WHAT ARE THE BEST DUTCH ROYAL SCANDALS? WHAT DO THE TABLOIDS SAY?

Beatrix's father, Prince Bernard, had his share. German-born, he served the Allies well in World War II, flying combat missions. Later in life, he had extramarital affairs and got tangled up in bribery accusations.

YOU'RE TELLING ME YOU'VE GOT NOTHING ON BEATRIX OR WILLEM-ALEXANDER?

Well, nothing directly on Beatrix. Willem-Alexander once crashed a car. And he was criticized by some for running onto the field and celebrating along with the Dutch women's hockey team after they won the bronze medal at the Olympics in Atlanta, although others saw that as a good thing.

But the most serious scandals they faced arose from their marriages. That's not because the character of any spouse was in question, but rather because of his or her family background.

Beatrix's marriage to her husband Prince Claus was initially resisted by the Dutch public, with many residents upset about his service with the Nazi army in World War II and membership in the Hitler Youth. He served in Italy near the end of the fighting and was quickly taken prisoner. As royal consort, he eventually became popular for his quiet, modest and honest nature.

Princess Maxima's father, meanwhile, was Agriculture Minister in Argentina in the murderous Videla regime of the late 1970s. Out of diplomatic considerations, her family won't be attending when she is sworn in as queen and Willem-Alexander is inaugurated as king on April 30.

"SWORN IN"? "INAUGURATED"? I THINK THE WORD YOU'RE LOOKING FOR IS "CROWNED."

Nope. Willem-Alexander won't be getting a crown placed on his head, or become overlord of all Dutch people. This goes back to the difference between the Dutch and British royal houses. The Dutch monarchy is not just more modern in viewing the kingship as more of a profession than a perhaps divinely ordained role, it's literally more modern. It was founded after the American Revolutionary War, and, more importantly in European terms, after the French Revolution. Dutch monarchs are inaugurated at a meeting of the upper and lower houses of the Dutch Parliament, where they promise to serve and uphold the country's constitution.

As a commoner, you are still supposed to address the monarch as "your highness," though, if you happen to bump into him or her at a cocktail party. It's protocol.

WILL THERE BE A PARTY TO USHER IN THE CHANGES? AND WHO GETS TO GO?

Most definitely. And everyone.

April 30, Queens' Day, rivals New Year's Eve as the biggest bash of the year in the Netherlands. There hasn't been a king on the Dutch throne in more than 100 years, but this year's celebration will probably be the last Queens' Day until one of Willem-Alexander's daughters ? presumably the oldest, Catharina-Amalia ? someday replaces him.

But next year there will be a King's Day at around the same time.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said Queen Beatrix doesn't think it's appropriate that she receive a big going away gift or that an excessive amount of money be spent on the celebration, given that the Dutch economy is in a weak patch. But ? this party being held in Amsterdam, which has a reputation to uphold ? he said it wouldn't be a sober affair either, where all they serve is "a little glass of fruit juice."

Ex-governor emerges from prison into changed world

George Ryan, former governor of Illinois, has served five years for racketeering and conspiracy. While he was in prison, his wife and brother died, and Illinois enacted reforms meant to thwart political wheeling and dealing.

By Michael Tarm and Sophia Tareen,?Associated Press / January 29, 2013

Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan leaves Chicago's federal courthouse after his conviction on racketeering and fraud charges, April 17, 2006. Ryan is scheduled to be released from prison on Wednesday, Jan. 30. He entered prison in November 2007.

When former Illinois Gov. George Ryan steps out of prison on Wednesday after serving five-plus years for corruption, he will return to a life altered by personal tragedy and to a state altered by his and his successor's legacy of corruption.

Ryan, who is headed to a halfway house in Chicago, will encounter an Illinois that has enacted reforms meant to thwart the kind of wheeling and dealing the Republican was accused of engaging in. The state has also changed because of Ryan's legal actions as governor: Following his lead, Illinois abolished the death penalty in 2011.

His personal tragedies include the death of his wife and brother while Ryan was behind bars. Change for the 78-year-old has also included weight loss from walking the grounds at his Terre Haute, Ind., prison, said friend Rob Warden, who visited Ryan a few months ago and has corresponded with him over his years behind bars.

"When I saw him, he was upbeat," said Warden, who is also an anti-capital punishment activist. "He has reconciled himself to what happened to him." At the same time, said Warden, Ryan still maintains that the actions for which he was convicted in 2006 never crossed the line into criminality.

Jurors convicted Ryan on multiple charges, including racketeering and conspiracy. They agreed that, among other crimes, he had steered state business to insiders as secretary of state and then as governor in exchange for vacations and gifts. He began serving a 6 ?-year prison sentence in November 2007 and is being released early into a halfway house under a work-release program.

Thanks to his long-running legal saga, Ryan comes out of prison with no money, his attorneys have said. His state pension was yanked.

The most jarring change for Ryan is that his wife of 55 years, Lura Lynn, died in 2011. He was allowed to visit her in hospital but not to go to her funeral.

His own health has suffered. He's dealt with kidney disease and infected teeth.

It's unclear how Ryan might support himself. He became a celebrity among activists devoted to abolishing the death penalty and they say he could play a role as their national spokesman, possibly going on speaking tours across the country.

Ryan switched from the pro- to anti-death penalty camp in the early 2000s, clearing death row while he was governor. Some critics questioned Ryan's motivation, saying it was a political diversion. But Warden, the executive director of the Chicago-based Center on Wrongful Convictions, and others disagree.

"He's stepping into a changed world ? and it's a changed world partly because of the leadership he showed (opposing capital punishment)," said Diann Rust-Tierney, president of the Washington, D.C.-based National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.

Before he even endeavors to take on post-prison challenges or opportunities, Ryan will take in the pleasure of no longer being behind bars, said former Chicago city clerk Jim Laski, who was sentenced to two years in prison for corruption in 2006.

Israel?s Bread and Butter Dilemma

By RON JAGER,

One week after Israel?s elections, it is fairly accurate to state that the public voted almost exclusively on alleviating the alleged plight of Israel?s middle class, ignoring issues pertinent to security and foreign policy issues. The only valid interpretation of the election results in light of what was on the voter?s mind is that the Oslo Agreement and the endless political negotiations with the Palestinian Arabs have lost all relevance to the Israeli public. Senseless withdrawals in response to delusional Palestinian Arab demands will no longer be tolerated in the public discourse. The Israeli public has been convinced that after 20 years of fruitless negotiations, a viable peace agreement with the Palestinians is unattainable in the foreseeable future. A dominant cultural characteristic of Israeli?s is that they despise being ?Friers? (suckers), they have turned their backs to a political process that led to Israeli concessions in return for Palestinian terror. The election results reflect a major shift on the part of the Israeli public and so a new national agenda must emerge that resonates this change. Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennett, alongside Benjamin Netanyahu not only represents this major shift but can also bring about this change.

Israel circa, 2013; the voters have spoken and they have clearly stated ? ?it?s the economy, stupid?. Today, Israel?s working class and middle class have had enough, and voted according to this idea; you the political leaders must stop wasting time and energy on the peace process which is a code-word for worthless negotiations with the Palestinian Arabs and instead confront and focus on internal challenges. This means that Israel?s soon to be established government with Netanyahu as Prime Minister will focus in on the economy and find a way to lower the cost of living so that the working class and the middle class can afford decent housing, a family car, and yes a yearly family vacation. The new government will allow Israeli?s to believe and feel that they are being treated equally as far as civil obligations are concerned. If military service or national service is compulsory, than it should be compulsory for all. Major segments of the population such as the Charedi and Israeli Arabs will no longer be automatically exempt from national obligations and must begin to send their children to serve in the army or national service. This tectonic change will not only give meaning to equal rights alongside equal obligations for all, but will also strengthen the unique social fabric of Israel and make for a fairer society in Israel.? Equal obligations and opportunities for all, will most likely be the major focus of the next government.

So with all this said and done, I am compelled to ask if the Israeli public has gone into denial mode, giving priority to issues of ?bread and butter? over those of ?life and death?. Can we avoid the conclusion that Israel?s voting public has become dangerously detached from the real challenges the nation needs to address. Not Iran?s nuclear bomb, nor the extreme Islamic nations cropping up one by one on Israel?s border, seem to be a major concern. Is our economic plight in Israel so bad, that we can allow ourselves to deal with mundane issues of economic well-being.? Whats even more confusing is that
poll after poll, both foreign and local, have shown extremely high levels of satisfaction with life in Israel, well above that in most industrial countries. Important socioeconomic indicators are better in Israel than the average in the OECD countries. Life expectancy ? usually taken as an indicator of the level of a country?s healthcare ? is almost 82 years in Israel. A stroll through urban Israel will reveal that restaurants are full, cafes crowded, pubs jam-packed; the recreation industry appears booming, with beaches teeming in summer, the ski slope crammed in winter, rural byways swarming with off-road cyclists over the weekends, decked out with the latest equipment and accessories. So Against this backdrop of prosperity and a widespread leisure society, the eruption of economic discontent as reflected in the election results seems oddly misplaced and representative of something else going on.

It seems that a new day is dawning upon us, the dawn of a day in which Israelis want to be left alone. For the past few years Israel is enjoying the longest period of calm for decades. Economically, the Netanyahu government?s stewarded the Israeli economy successfully through the global crisis that affected much of the industrial world, leaving Israel largely untouched by the world economic crisis and accustomed to economic prosperity alongside a reasonably quiet security situation. What may seem to those far away as a vote of no-confidence may very well be an attempt by the Israeli electorate to maintain the ship of Israel on a steady course. They may very well be implying that they don?t want to endanger our economy and our well-being with delusional political negotiations, or reckless economic hand-outs and entitlements making all sectors of the Israeli public active participants in making the economy strong. The Israeli public knows what is at stake and what they have to lose, they want a strong and stable environment and they know that the leftist-socialist brand of politics will only endanger this in the years to come.

Quite simply, most Israelis have voted for the center and right wing political parties because they see no immediate hope in peace talks and regard figures like Benjamin Netanyahu as the best guarantee of the country?s economic and security well being for the foreseeable future.

Video: Obama to Congress on immigration bill: ?Now is the time?

>>> the reckoning. let's play "hardball."

>>> good evening. i'm chris matthews in washington . let me start with this, the reckoning. put up or shut up, d day . president obama through down the gauntlet. he demanded congress pass a potent immigration reform bill, one that fiks the problem of decades, deals with the 12 million people here illegally, stops the illegal hiring and exploitation of worgers. so the challenge is out there right now right there in tonight's news packed and ready for tomorrow's newspapers. will it explode into action, light a firecracker under the republicans? will it detonate an avalanche of action driving teeth into the reform, ending the perennial talk that's led to nothing or to the old bogus reforms of the past. will the politicians get real or play more games of ethnic fear, economic exploitation and wedge politics ? was today the end of all that? that could be possible? let's take a hard look with chuck todd . you heard all my questions. i'm holder than you, i have been through simpson mazoly. we were --

>> i love it's getting a come back.

>> we've passed bills that said it's got teeth and it's got amnesty for people who have been here to while. is this going to work politically and substantively?

>> politically i think it's definitely going to work. politically there's the tune of the immigration debate , the fact you have business that needs this, whether it's agricultural, whether it's high-tech. business community is demanding at washington to do something about this and then you have the politics srm of the hispanic vote, so politically this is going to happen. i kind of dush.

>> republican control the house. what do they get out of it?

>> stop having the hispanic issue as a wedge. to actually begin to have a conversation when the new generation of --

>> like george w. tried to do.

>> republicans make the point, the number one issue with hispanics is not immigration. they're right. but they're not listening to you. if you're saying weird things like legitimate rape then that voting bloc isn't going to listen to you on education, on taxes, on any of this stuff. that's what's going on.

>> so that's the issue.

>> of what do democrats get out of it? why are they pushing it?

>> hispanics have been demanding something on this, and at some point --

>> but do they want the teeth, the tough requirements of worker verification? do they want the tough part of the bill?

>> i think -- yes, because if you actually go to places like arizona and new mexico and i have seen surveys of hispanic americans , hispanic american citizens who say second, third, fourth generation, saying i did it legally. these folks should have to do it legally.

>> i just don't hear that from the latino groups.

>> no, they --

>> i don't hear the interest groups pushing for real teeth. let's take a look --

>> the interest groups rnt. i'm talking about rank and file hispanic americans .

>> that's positive. let's look at what he had to say. he came out for what he calls comprehensive immigration reform . it was at a speech in las vegas . he said the bipartisan plan put forward by eight senators was in line with the principles he's for which is very interesting. bipartisan approach. let's listen. here he is.

>> but the principles are pretty straightforward. first, i believe we need to stay focused on enforcement. that means continuing to strengthen security at our borders. it means cracking down more forcefully on businesses that knowingly hire undocumented workers . we need to implement a national system that allows businesses to quickly and accurately verify someone's employment status. second, we have to deal with the 11 million individuals who are here illegally. we all agree that these men and women should have to earn their way to citizenship. but for comprehensive immigration reform to work, it must be clear from the outset that there is a pathway to citizenship.

>> okay. your strength is in politics. went to a largely hispanic high school in las vegas --

>> you wouldn't know thap.

>> they aemployeded all the positives.

>> they didn't applause any of the enforcement stuff. you're pointing out the flags.

>> i think visually what's amazing, politics is a visual game sometimes, and what message is someone trying to say if you turn the sound down? i guess the president is patriotic, he's sitting in front of american flags . beyond that --

>> would have been better if we could have seen the young hispanic high school kids?

>> i think it would be. this is about a younger generation of hispanics who, why are they coming to america ? they're coming to america for all of the right reasons that we want america to be, the shining city on the hill, particularly --

>> let's talk about the key guy here. besides the president who is always the key guy. here is marco rubio . i think he may have split ambitions. if he does it right with the eight senators, four democrats, four republicans and they coalesce with the president, the president will get credit. he may be willing to share the headline here. here he is. he spoke to rush limbaugh today. this is marco rubio of florida. here he is.

>> i know this is a tough issue. i do. i know why people are uncomfortable about it. it doesn't feel right to in some instances to, you know, allow people who have come here undocumented to be able to stay. i know for some people they're uncomfortable with this notion. this is a tough issue to work through. i think this is a significant challenge we face. i know the president is going to take us in a direction i would not be comfortable with and i don't think it's good for america . i'm trying to do the whes i can with what's already a toughspation.

>> he's probably the only guest on the show to say undoumented workers rather than aliens. listen to how limbaugh looked at it.

>> i have seen a number of research, scholarly research data, which says that vast majority of arriving immigrants today come here because they believe that government is the source of prosperity, and that's what they support. it's not about conservative principles and so fort. not the way it used to be.

>> look, i don't know. i don't have -- i haven't done a scholarly study on the makeup. i can only tell you about the people i interact with and i can tell you that the folks i interact with, once they get into this country and they start to work and they open up their own business, they start to understand the cost of big government .

>> there's such a thing in politics and public affairs and commentary that's a lie. and what he just said was a lie. if you look at any road gang in america out there working on the roads, hispanics , if you go to the guys doing housing, roofing, guys doing lawns, guys doing craftsman work all over the buschs and the country, beverly hills , chevy chase , they're all spanish speaking and the idea they all came here for welfare checks.

>> they come here to earn money. to send it back. to take that money and they're sending say half of it -- they live on what they have to, and they're sending it back to try to support family --

>> i don't think hispanics are big on government anyway. i think they're trying to get away from lousy governments most of them.

>> every immigrant, and i have studied this, and you have too, over 200 years in this country, it's been the same thing. during garfield's election, i love to bring this up, during james garfield 's election, the state of california almost, you know, was teetering on the edge over the issue of illegal chinese immigration . we go through this as a society. we have these issues, but every imgraget population that's come to the united states has come here for the same reason, looking for work. that's all.

>> the chinese were the most crime-free community in history. they don't cause anybody any trouble. thank you, chuck todd . let's turn to somebody who knows he's a member of congress from that part of the country right down near the warder, joaquin castro , democrat from texas. this is "hardball" and we're talking about whether they will get a bill that passes both houses, the one controlled by the senate and one by the house. do you think the majority led by people like, well, john boehner and cantor are actually going to put their fingers on an immigration bill and pass it?

>> i think they will, chris, and i hope they will. i think especially with the november election, the american penal made it clear i believe that they want the congress and they want the president to tackle this issue and to finally get it done. i think what we've seen in the last few days is very promising first with the senate proposal and now the president's proposal. at least we know we're having a serious discussion about it and we're more or less on the same field.

>> i have always liked schumer politically and rubio, the fact he's with them, lindsey graham , i respect them all. are you surprised that rubio, who is obviously gunning for the presidency, has been able to make a deal with someone like chuck shunler of new york who is a liberal? is this something that can be done across the country, liberal/conservative compromise with teeth and also with something for people who have been here a long time and want to become american?

>> there's no question. it's a wonderful turn of events, especially because of all the stalemates on a number of issues we've had in washington over the last few years. and so i was a bit surprised to see all eight of them standing up there at the podium locked in arms, coming out with this bipartisan proposal. so i think it bodes well for the issue.

>> do you think we're going to get to the point if this thing is in effect or something like it where we won't be embarrassed by people racing across the border down the arizona line, texas line, people racing for their life to get jobs. i know their mope tiffs are good but the idea of a country where you race across lines and fences and you have to come in illegally s this ever going to turn down. will we have people become guest workers or applicants or long-term stays here where it's actually done like a modern society ought to operate?

>> i hope that we can get to that point. you know, as you and chuck were talking about, these folks who come over, 90-something percent of them come with the best of intentions. they want to work and support their families and, quite frankly, chris, these are folks that are desperate people often times whose kids are starving, don't have much to eat. they're not able to make a living in mexico or another country where they're fromer from, so they come to the united states in the same spirit that the eyish and the germans and the italians came and that is for opportunity. and it's not to get rich. it's an opportunity just to survive.

>> let me ask you about guest workers . it's always been a tricky thing because in the old days of nixon, it had a negative connotation. is part of the answer temporary workers that come up here for the season, they may work in agricultural, make a bundle of money by their standards, head back with it to their families, that way you don't combine working with immigration in every situation. are you happy with that or does that seem discriminatory to you? how do you react to it?

>> well i think, and you see in both proposals this path to citizenship, i think that path to citizenship should be available for undocumented immigrants . there should be an option i think or there could be an option for them to have temporary worker status if they're choosing not to become residents or citizens, but, you know, when you think about the dreamers and other folks who are not, you know, kids who are dreamers but maybe have been here 10 or 15 years and paid taxes and essentially have lived out many years as americans, we should give them a path to citizenship.

>> you know, the hardest thing about this is trust. the conservatives and you know it better than i do, you represent people down there in that part of a country where it's a touchy issue, a lot of conservatives will say i want enforcement first and then we'll talk about amnesty or whatever we're going to call it. wait a minute, if you do that, if you seal up the border right now and, which is maybe not the most important thick, you insist on e verify working, you can't work unless you're here legally, what happens to the 12 million people in the meantime? they can't work? in other words, it's the chicken and egg problem . how do you get to a better world in this country step by step had in a way that conservatives will go along with, middle of the roaders, and liberals who really want to see something done in terms of helping the people here. how do you stop the i will lelg action in the meantime? tell me what you think about the sequence. i think it's going to be a hot part of this issue, what comes first.

>> sure. and i think you're right. the argument that you have had mostly from folks on the right is, look, we can't create any guest worker program or a path to citizenship until we secure the border and that argument has a lot of resonance but we have got to consider the moment that we're in. it's a fact that this president has committed more resources to the border than any president in american history . in 2004 when president bush was re-elected, there were 10,000 border patrol agents on the border . today there are more than 21,000. there are 652 miles of border barriers, including fencing, along the border . so this president has committed not only money but also manpower to securing the border . if we're going to hold this thing up, a path to citizenship until we secure the border , then we've got to have objective measures about what that means because i promise you if you put rick perry and jan brewer on that southwestern commission to determine when the border has been secured, they're never going to approve it because it's not in their political interest to approve it. so we've got to be very careful if we operate in phases.

>> be interesting how we do this. i hope it works. we tried it before with simpson ms. zola. i think we all agree on the elements. it's putting this thing together that will matter. it's great to have you on, by the way, congressman, joaquin castro . your brother is great, too. he gave a great speech at the convention. come.

>>> coming up, civil war in the republican party . one side says only a moderate sensible gop will be able to compete. on the other side are wingers like glenn beck .

>>> plus, who is behind the strange alliance of neocons and gays trying to kill chuck hagel 's nomination for defense secretary ? we're going to get into that one. that's a favorite of mine. among those opposing hagel, a shadowy group who says it's pro-gay but buys its ad through a top republican firm.

>>> and "argo," lincoln, the good wife, veep, that he is no denying it, movies and shows about politics are suddenly hot. the great kevin spacey sits in this chair in a few minutes. he's got a new political show called " house of cards ." it reminds me of what might have happened if john kerry had not been maet secretary of state.

>>> let me finish with kerry's confirmation. it happened just an hour ago as secretary of state and thursday's hearing for chuck hagel as secretary of defense. i support both of them. this is "hardball," the
