To the delight of UAlbany football fans, the season's first home game was played in a brand new football stadium. Our Madeleine Rivera has more on what fans had to say.
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The enthusiasm was contagious. Thousands of fans eagerly waited for the kickoff of one of the most important games of the season.
"Pumped, new field, stadium looks sick," said Greg Burnside, a UAlbany senior.
He has been looking forward to the opening of the Bob Ford Field for three years. That's how long the field and the rest of this $19 million project has been in the making. The university wanted to turn their old fields into a bigger, multi sport venue that will stay open year round.
"We were freshmen when this whole idea came in. And now that it's finally here, it's amazing to us. We're very thankful. And we just want to see a win," said senior Brendan Hall.
Some alumni say they have not felt a greater connection to UAlbany than on the day of this season home opener.
"I think Albany's back on the map. It's about time that we have these kind of gatherings. You can tell right behind us. We're alum," said UAlbany alumni Jeff Weltz.
UAlbany football player Nik Schultz graduated in 2008. He says when he was a freshman, the students were promised a new field.
"Now, it's finally a reality. It's awesome. You can't beat it," he said.
And the number of people who came out for this game? A record breaking number of nearly 8,500.
For UAlbany students, there's no better time to be a Great Dane.
"I feel like they have a great opportunity to have a good time. They have a good fan base to support them. A lot of good people to support them," said Schultz.
