HOUSTON ? Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub returned to practice on Wednesday morning and it turned out to be a little more eventful than he would have hoped.
?
During practice, Schaub was nearly hit by a golf cart carrying bags of ice.
?
?Yeah, good thing I have pretty nimble feet,? Schaub said with a smile. ?That?s the youthfulness from the off-seasons coming through. I was able to side step it.?
?
Those quick steps will come have to come in handy this season as the Texans QB enters what many think is a make or break year for him under center. At 32 years old, Schaub has shown flashes of what he can be, but is trying to overcome the stigma that he can?t win the big game.
?
He feels better than ever, which for him, is a good place to start.
?
?Not having to rehab like last year with my foot injury played into it,? Schaub said. ?I could get back in the gym, get back working out sooner, doing stuff, getting out here on the field, doing positional stuff, and just getting back into football shape in the offseason. Just working hard through it.?
?
The veteran is getting a front row seat to the back-up quarterback competition that?s happening behind him. Schaub knows that both TJ Yates and Case Keenum are both capable of taking over, which is actually pushing him to be even better.
?
?Yeah, those guys are working extremely hard. As a group, we push each other,? Schaub said. ?We challenge each other and stay competitive within our room and those guys are no different.?
?
Schaub returned to the practice field on Wednesday after missing two days because of a death in the family. His grandfather on his mother?s side passed away.
?
?My grandfather was one of my biggest fans. He was always there, always supportive,? Schaub said. ?The first one I would talk to when I got home from games growing up or in high school and college. He would always be there to support. He was a special man.?
Schaub is expected to take more reps this weekend against the Dolphins. Keenum will follow and TJ Yates will get some action with the third team offense.
