CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- Lieutenant Governor Glenn McConnell may be under consideration to become the next College of Charleston president.
McConnell told Live 5's Bill Sharpe he has been approached by several College of Charleston alumni and trustees, gauging his interest for the job of president of the college.?
The Lieutenant Governor is a graduate of the college and has a campus dormitory named in his honor.
McConnell also told Sharpe that he is not seeking the job as he is running for re-election as lieutenant governor, but he would listen if it were offered to him.?
Current president, George Benson, is resigning effective next June.
McConnell said these are critical times for the college, noting there are challenges with keeping the college a liberal arts institution, the controversy over the possible sale of the Charleston School of Law, and the possible merger between the college and MUSC.
The lieutenant governor is thought to have great fundraising potential with the SC legislature and with Boeing.? Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell said McConnell "has relationships the college needs with our state leadership, and the management skills to make CofC run smoothly."
College spokesman Mike Robertson says the Board of Trustees has not begun the search process for the next president. The trustees are currently taking part in a retreat at Wild Dunes.
