"Very honored to have the community come out like this in memory of my dad," said Jerry Hulbert.

On Thursday, a golf tournament was held in honor of Van Hulburt at the Batavia Country Club.

"My dad was an avid golfer. He was a coach of the Byron-Bergen golf team for over 30 years," said Jerry.

Hulbert passed away 14 years ago from cancer. It was then that they decided to start a golf tournament.

"This is what he would have wanted to have done in his honor," said wife Helen Hulbert.

And raise money for the Crossroads House in Batavia.

"A comfort home for the terminally ill. Our residents have a prognosis of 90 days or less," said volunteer Frank Panepento.

In the past 13 years, the tournament raised more $50,000.

"It's unbelievable and it's over $55,000. It's hard to fathom, they've done it for years. I never met Van but I met his family from sitting at different holes and to hear the stories, it's incredible, so really his legacy is carried on," said the founder of Crossroads House, Kathy Panepento.

Many of his students agree, and that is why they have come to the tournament from all over the country.

"Van was great, very individualized in terms of working working my skills, working on the team's ability as well, lots of subtle advice. He missed in humor as well. Great mentor off the course," said Michael Yager.

Everyone said that today was about spending time together.

"We do this not only to raise money but to bring people together," said co-chairman Ralph Marsocci.
