ESPN: Vilma Offered Reduced Suspension By NFL

For thousands of New Orleans-area students, this week marks the end of summer vacation and the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.

Most students who attend schools in the Recovery School District (RSD) return to the classroom today. Some of them will be welcomed back by RSD Superintendent Patrick Dobard, who's scheduled to visit charter and direct-run schools.

School zone hours have been extended this school?year in New Orleans. The morning hours are now from 7am to 9am and the new afternoon hours are 2:45pm to 4:45pm.?The City Council voted to extend the hours because many schools now open earlier and stay open later in the day.

St. Tammany and Jefferson Parish public school students have a few more days off before they go back to school. St. Tammany students go back on Wednesday and Jefferson students?start classes on Thursday.

Trey Folse, superintendent of schools in St. Tammany, says one of his goals for the new year is to maintain the school system's top ranking in test scores.

"We're number one in the state test score-wise of school systems over 20,000 students," Folse said.

Folse's message to parents is, "Parents need to know that on the first day of school that we want their students ready to learn, and we're gonna hit the ground running on the first day."
