The Texas Exes, the alumni association for The University of Texas at Austin, announces the immediate opening for the full-time, exempt position of Director of Public Affairs.
Position Overview The Director of Public Affairs furthers the Texas Exes purpose of championing the University of Texas by engaging the base of supporters to advance the University?s mission and goals with external governing bodies who may affect the input and outcomes of UT. The Director is responsible for the identification, recruitment, and fostering of relationships with University of Texas alumni and supporters with appointed and elected officials, especially in the state legislature. The Director monitors legislative and board driven activities on an ongoing basis, interacting with partner organizations to prioritize and coordinate advocacy approaches. The Director engages advocates through in-person meetings, online and in-person training, designated events during legislative sessions, and ongoing correspondence by phone, email, and in-person. The Director is responsible for advancing the Texas Exes? goal to have the country?s best public university advocacy program in support of the nation?s premier public university.

Major Job Functions ? Identify, recruit, train and maintain a core group of engaged advocates ? Identify and monitor legislative, executive, and governing body activities ? Interface with Texas Exes leadership to drive awareness of governing body activities and present key strategies for consideration ? Communicate and coordinate with third party partner organizations to develop situational analysis and strategic response in order to address and possibly activate volunteers ? Coordinate key program functions of the advocacy program including legislative day and regular meet & greet events ? Coordinate with student and alumni advocates and other partner organizations ? Supervise advocacy interns in regular legislative engagement opportunities ? Dynamically harvest and share key information with advocates to foster and promote connections between state legislators and their UT constituents ? Facilitate the Public Affairs Committee meetings agendas and meeting preparation ? Work with the advocacy editor to articulate and communicate key issues to the public, the legislature, and advocates.
Essential Job Requirements ? Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability to think critically and problem-solve ? Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, database software, and CRM software ? Ability to be flexible, to multi-task, to be a self-starter, and to work across departments ? Ability to communicate with multiple stakeholders ? Ability to analyze data from multiple sources ? Strong presentation skills and the ability to succinctly articulate complex issues ? Strong oral and written communication skills ? Ability to work evenings and weekends ? Ability to travel throughout Texas on a regular basis ? Discretion in dealing with sensitive information and relationships ? Bachelor?s degree ? Work experience in State of Texas public policy and/or legislative affairs

Success for this position means coaching and encouraging a defined set volunteer advocates to confidently advocate for The University and make a positive impression of UT to policy makers. ? An effective director will be shrewd, non-partisan, and operate with neutrality, cultivating a united sense of purpose for UT Austin advocates. ? The University of Texas belongs to the state. A successful director will help equip volunteers with the tools and knowledge to persuasively tell the story of UT Austin and its impact in corner of the state. ? An effective employee will think critically about the ways that the work of the Exes and UT in general connects with state appointed and elected officials. ? A passion for people is essential. ? A degree from UT Austin preferred.
