?Carbon neutral isn?t good enough": BT CEO Ian Livingston presents Net Good plan in London

LONDON: BT?s Net Good framework was launched in London yesterday, where BT?s CEO Ian Livingston and other experts showcased the new carbon abatement methodology, which has the potential to jump start innovation across the private sector.

Mark Kenber, CEO, The Climate Group, opened the event at the packed RSA in London by framing the ?essential? need to measure impacts beyond companies? own footprints in order to drive down global emissions. Mark praised BT?s Net Good framework?s ?innovative approach? and called for more companies to contribute to ?enabling even more CO2 savings than they cause?.

Ian Livingston, CEO, BT, then presented the Net Good methodology, of helping customers reduce carbon emissions by at least three times the end-to-end carbon impact of BT?s business by 2020. He stated: ?Carbon neutral isn?t good enough. We have to aim for carbon positive?, and said that ?doing good business? and ?being a good business? are complementary elements: ?You can become a good business by putting sustainability at the heart of what you do and being a responsible citizen in the areas you operate?.

Open source data

Ian Livingston stressed the role of customers for delivering Net Good results, as they are increasingly looking to do businesses with companies that ?do the right thing? and are a central aspect of the open-source nature of the Net Good framework. He concluded that while there is ?no silver bullet?, he called Net Good an ?ambitious goal that presents real opportunity? for better business, ending on the inspiring: ?We hope to play our part in creating a better future.?

Then Kevin Moss, Program Director Net Good, BT, took to the stage to explain the framework in more depth. He said Net Good will better measure green product portfolios to deliver profits and benefits: ?For each of our products that help customers save carbon, we?ve calculated just how much.? He clarified the three routes that BT will go to grow from its current 1:1 to 3:1 by 2020, including upstream supply chains which represent 64% of BT?s end-to-end emissions. But Kevin iterated that BT can not do the work alone, and collaboration and open sourcing for data is integral to Net Good.

Calling for bold ambition across industries, Kevin said that while CO2 savings surpassing a business footprint is good, interventions must also ?disrupt and drive a cleaner energy system?. He wrapped up by pointing to BT?s Better Future report and the company?s influential leadership, affirming: ?By putting the stake in the ground, we hope others will do the same; try it, build on it? so the shift moves from doing less bad, to more good.?

Private sector innovation

Following the framework launch was a panel moderated by The Climate Group?s CEO, Mark Kenber, who asked guests to discuss the Net Good framework and its wider impacts. Tom Delay, Chief Executive, the Carbon Trust, said that global businesses must be sustainable to engender loyalty among future generations, as their surveys show that "consumers are more loyal to brands with environmental strategies?. While he said that to correlate financial and environmental performance is ?unfair?, it is inherent in many industries. He said: ?All sectors can do the Net Good calculation, but it is about understanding individual impacts of companies and consumption?. He concluded that BT?s Net Good is an ?enormous opportunity? for both the medium and long term, for companies that want to do business in a more transparent way.

Mike Berners-Lee of Small World Consulting?also agreed that?both trust and transparency are key to Net Good, and?while the supply chain analysis that Net Good requires may put people off due to its complexity, it is a practical process that gives ?intelligent steer? to businesses.?

Paul Crewe, Head of Sustainability, Engineering, Energy & Environment, Sainsbury?s, praised Net Good for its ?bold and vitally important first step into the unknown?. He said Sainsbury?s operates in a competitive market yet still aims for the Net Good framework, by running ambitious pilots and quickly rolling-out successes. He said: ?We?d rather shoot for the stars and land on the moon than not shoot at all?, and that while Sainsbury?s is competitive, ?collaboration and sharing are essential?.

BT?s Kevin Moss who was also on the panel, further highlighted BT?s efforts in carbon abatement, including the company?s aim to make 15% of all procurement decisions weighted towards carbon and energy saving. He said much of the program's progress is driven by customers asking about sustainability more, as well as working in an increasingly resource-constrained ?new world?, in which Net Good will help BT thrive. Kevin added that while BT is fortunate by being in the ICT sector where there are straight-forward metrics on both sides as well as big opportunities in smart cities, homes, energy and transport, he added that real impact was in inspiring others. He said: ?we do not expect to make a profit from the Net Good launch, but it will help us with innovation and opportunity - and we want our customers and suppliers to play a part?.

The event ended with a series of break-out sessions lead by representatives from the Carbon Trust, The Climate Group and BT, where engaged stakeholders shared ideas on achieving simple metrics and driving standards that will feed into the open-source nature of Net Good. Niall Dunne, Chief Sustainability Officer, BT,?concluded with: ?Disruptive and simple is good. Let?s get diverse: this is about systematic transformation. Breaking down barriers and collaborating to pull in the same direction: towards net good.?

SAN FRANCISCO-- The naturally occurring hormone kisspeptin effectively induces egg maturation during infertility treatment, according to a clinical in vitro fertilization (IVF) study. The results were presented Monday at The Endocrine Society's 95th Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Aptly named after the popular chocolate Hershey's kiss candy, kisspeptin was discovered in Hershey, PA, in 1996. Released by the brain in both males and females, the hormone triggers the development of secondary sexual characteristics and other changes of puberty.

Each year, thousands of women seek IVF treatment for infertility. The treatment is readily available and often successful, but, like all medical interventions, still has some risks. One of the most serious is a condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. This condition results when the hormones used to stimulate egg maturation overstimulate the ovaries, which can then become painfully swollen. Often cases are mild and improve without treatment in one to two weeks. However, approximately 10 percent of cases are severe ones causing life-threatening complications, including shortness of breath, blood clots and kidney failure.

In contrast, kisspeptin stimulates the ovaries to release levels of reproductive hormones that are similar to those produced naturally by women with normal menstrual cycles. Because of this, fertility researchers are interested in the hormone's potential to safely induce egg maturation in IVF.

Results from this study funded by the Medical Research Council UK and the National Institute for Health Research indicate that the hormone kisspeptin effectively induces egg maturation when used during IVF treatment. In 21 of 22 women who participated in the study, egg maturation occurred after kisspeptin injections. Embryos developed in 20 women. Twelve hours after kisspeptin injections, luteinizing hormone levels increased eightfold. During the normal reproductive cycle, luteinizing hormone increases to trigger ovulation.

"We have shown that kisspeptin can be used effectively in patients undergoing IVF treatment to more naturally stimulate the release of reproductive hormones and result in a healthy baby," said study lead author Waljit Dhillo, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Endocrinology at Imperial College London, United Kingdom. "The use of a hormone that stimulates the release of reproductive hormones during IVF treatment as occurs in normal women could prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Kisspeptin may, therefore, offer an entirely novel therapeutic option for fertility treatment."

Study participants included 22 women who received IVF treatment with kisspeptin in place of the customary hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin, used to induce egg maturation during IVF. Thirty-six hours after kisspeptin injection, investigators obtained the mature eggs, which they then artificially inseminated. After embryo development occurred, investigators transferred one to two embryos to the uterus.

While it is still too early to assess all of the pregnancy data, early data are very encouraging, showing that eight of 19 participants were pregnant 12 days after receiving an embryo transfer. One woman has already given birth to a healthy baby boy. The next step, according to Dhillo, is to determine whether kisspeptin can prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in women who are healthy, but infertile.

The Medical Research Council UK and the National Institute for Health Research funded the study.

Amgen share buybacks, drugs may fuel more stock gains - Barron's

(Reuters) - Amgen Inc , the world's largest biotechnology company, has plenty of room to grow despite a 43 percent jump in its share price over the past year, thanks to cost cuts, newer drugs and hefty share buybacks, Barron's said.

Share gains for the company have been due in part to pledges by Chief Executive Officer Robert Bradway, since he took the helm of the California biotech in May 2012, to return 60 percent of adjusted net income to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks, Barron's said.

"The shares could rise another 20 percent to $120, largely from staying the course," Barron's said, noting that Amgen has approved $12 billion in stock buybacks, initiated a dividend and raised it twice in the past two years.

North Korea proposes high-level talks with US

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea's top governing body on Sunday proposed high-level nuclear and security talks with the United States in an appeal sent just days after calling off talks with rival South Korea.

The powerful National Defense Commission headed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un issued a statement through state media proposing "senior-level" talks to ease tensions and discuss a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War. a

The rare proposal for talks between the Korean War foes follows months of acrimony over North Korea's defiant launch of a long-range rocket in December and a nuclear test in February, provocative acts that drew tightened U.N. and U.S. sanctions. The U.S. and South Korea countered the moves by stepping up annual springtime military exercises that prompted North Korea to warn of a "nuclear war" on the Korean Peninsula.

However, as tensions subsided in May and June, Pyongyang has made tentative overtures to re-establish dialogue with South Korea and Washington. Foreign analysts say impoverished North Korea often expresses interest in talks after raising tensions with provocative behavior in order to win outside concessions.

In a notable shift in propaganda in Pyongyang, posters and billboards calling on North Koreans to "wipe away the American imperialist aggressors" have been taken down in recent weeks.

There was no immediate response from Washington, but President Barack Obama's envoy on North Korea said Friday that while the U.S. is not averse to talking with Pyongyang, the bar for resuming engagement is higher in the wake of repeated threats and provocations.

Meanwhile, a recent proposal from Pyongyang for Cabinet-level talks with South Korea ? the first in six years ? led to plans for two days of meetings in Seoul earlier this week. The talks fell apart on Tuesday over who would lead the two delegations.

North Korea fought against U.S.-led United Nations and South Korean troops during the three-year Korean War in the early 1950s, and Pyongyang does not have diplomatic relations with either government. The Korean Peninsula remains divided by a heavily fortified border.

Reunifying the Korean Peninsula was a major goal of North Korea's two late leaders, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, and is a legacy inherited by current leader Kim Jong Un. North Korea is expected to draw attention to Korea's division in the weeks leading up to the 60th anniversary in July marking the close of the Korean conflict, which ended in an armistice. A peace treaty has never been signed formally ending the war.

Washington's top worry is North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Pyongyang is estimated to have a handful of crude nuclear devices and has been working toward building a bomb it can mount on a missile capable of striking the United States.

Earlier this year, Kim Jong Un enshrined the drive to build a nuclear arsenal, as well as building the economy, as national goals. North Korea claims the need to build atomic weapons to defend the country against what it sees as a U.S. nuclear threat in Korea and the region.

North Korea will not give up its nuclear ambitions until the entire Korean Peninsula is free of nuclear weapons, a spokesman from the National Defense Commission said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency.

"The denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula does not only mean 'dismantling the nuclear weapons of the North,' the spokesman said, but also should involve "denuclearizing the whole peninsula, including South Korea, and aims at totally ending the U.S. nuclear threats" to North Korea.

The U.S. denies having nuclear bombs in South Korea, saying they were removed in 1991. However, the U.S. military keeps nuclear submarines in the region and has deployed them for military exercises with South Korea.

After blaming Washington for raising tensions by imposing "gangster-like sanctions" on North Korea, the unnamed NDC spokesman called on the U.S. to propose a venue and date for talks but warned against setting preconditions.

U.S. envoy Glyn Davies had said Friday in Washington that the U.S. isn't opposed to engagement but would not accept North Korea as a nuclear state nor reward it for "absence of bad behavior."

The key to a diplomatic solution, he said, is for the U.S. and North Korea's four neighbors involved in long-stalled nuclear negotiations with Pyongyang to send a unified message: that it must live up to previous commitments to denuclearize. Davies, who is to meet with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts next week to discuss North Korea, said there is a growing international consensus against the North's nuclear ambitions.

"We have every expectation that Beijing will use its special relationship with the DPRK to encourage Pyongyang to choose a different path," he said, referring to the North's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in a comments made at the Wilson Center think tank.

Washington has been burned in the past by efforts to reach out to Pyongyang. Last year, months of behind-the-scenes negotiations yielded a significant food-for-disarmament deal in February 2012 ? but that was scuttled by a failed North Korean long-range rocket launch just weeks later.

Pyongyang's bid to reach out to the U.S. comes as South Korea's new president, Park Geun-hye, is to sit down for talks with China's new leader, Xi Jinping, in Beijing later this month. Park, whose North Korea policy calls for building trust while remaining firm on provocations, has been active in reaching out to Beijing. Xi, meanwhile, met with Obama in California recently.

China crucially supplied North Korea with troops during the Korean War, and has remained a key ally and benefactor since then, but has pushed Pyongyang to return to disarmament talks.

"The fact that North Korea proposed talks (with the U.S.) ahead of the South Korea-China summit signifies its intent to keep China in check," said Kim Yong-hyun, a professor of North Korean studies of Dongguk University in Seoul, South Korea.

Pyongyang also is sending a message to South Korea warning that if Seoul does not actively try to improve relations with North Korea, the regime will go directly to Washington, sidelining Seoul, he said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A look at key moments this past week in the wrongful death trial in Los Angeles between Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson, and concert giant AEG Live LLC, and what is expected at court in the week ahead:

THE CASE

Jackson's mother wants a jury to determine that the promoter of Jackson's planned comeback concerts didn't properly investigate Dr. Conrad Murray, who a criminal jury convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Jackson's June 2009 death. AEG's attorney says the case is about personal choice, namely Jackson's decision to have Murray serve as his doctor and give him doses of a powerful anesthetic as a sleep aid. Millions, possibly billions, of dollars are at stake.

The image was shot on June 19, 2009, the day the singer had to be sent home from rehearsals because he was shivering and unable to eat on his own, according to emails from top tour workers.

? "We seem to be talking about Michael like he's the 5-year-old lead singer of the Jackson Five. ... That was not the man I dealt with," Phillips said, describing the singer as a forceful businessman who dictated who he wanted to work with on the tour.

? "You can't give up on people ? that's not our job," Phillips said regarding working with entertainers who have documented problems of substance abuse.

OUTSIDE THE COURTROOM

? Authorities released a dispatch call related to the hospitalization of Jackson's 15-year-old daughter, Paris. According to information from sheriff's deputies at the scene, Paris Jackson took 20 Motrin pills and cut her arm with a kitchen knife.
