Cecile Richards: What Siri's Blind Spot on Women's Health Really Means

Co-authored with Eli Pariser

This week, blogs erupted with news that Siri had a "blind spot" when it comes to women's health. Ask Siri, Apple's latest app, a voice-activated personal assistant, where to get an abortion or where to find emergency contraception, and it typically replies, "Sorry, I don't see any places matching [your query]." Or worse, as some media outlets reported, Siri only provided locations for "crisis pregnancy centers," unlicensed clinics that don't actually provide health care. Instead, they target women with misinformation and propaganda.

No one owns the Internet, and we tend to assume that no one can control it. But this issue with Siri does show how easily a piece of code can shape our choices by limiting or controlling our options. Siri is amazingly adept at finding what you're looking for. Ask it for the nearest hardware store, reservations for two at your favorite Italian restaurant, where to buy Viagra, and presto -- you've got names, maps and phone numbers. Yet the trusty little wizard suddenly gets amnesia when asked about birth control or abortion care.

While this may be nothing more than a programming glitch, it is a modern-day example of the historic struggle women have always faced in getting access to health care and health information. The episode underscores the importance of being vigilant about the availability of information and services, especially critical health information, as new technologies emerge.

Apple's oversight, however innocent, highlights a threat that none of us should take lightly. The Internet can be a liberating force -- it has largely eradicated the kind of censorship that once choked people's reproductive rights.

But even as the old barriers fall, technology is erecting new ones that are less visible and more insidious. When search engines shape our knowledge of the world, their blind spots become our blind spots. And when they anticipate our needs -- by automatically narrowing search results to reflect our past preferences and interests -- they can replace open access with the illusion of open access. Tools that could lead us to new information and insight serve mainly to reinforce our biases.

Apple should fix this immediately. And digital developers need to adopt a new ethic, and a new set of rules, to address this emerging hazard. Meanwhile, the Siri episode should remind us that search engines can hide the truth and propagate misinformation. Abortion care is still safe, legal and accessible. So is birth control, and so is emergency contraception.

So if the wizard on your smart phone is puzzled by questions about women's health, use the phone's browser to visit plannedparenthood.org. It's fully accessible on mobile devices, and it won't mislead you about where to find the health services you need. The humans who manage it make sure of that.

A Missouri five-and-dime holds its own with novelties

One of the last five-and-dime stores in the United States can be found in Branson, Mo., where variety and novelty keep customers coming back.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.?

Sitting on Branson?s historic square, a store harks back to an era when families loaded the station wagon and drove to town on Saturday. The store sells ?dry goods? from decades past such as ?sewing notions,? 1940s starlet paper dolls, dainty handkerchiefs, wax lips, and lye soap.

This year, Dick?s celebrates its 50th anniversary. It?s one of the last five-and-dime stores in the United States.?

Started in 1961 by Dick and June Hartley, the store is now run by their son, Steve, who continues his late father?s dream of offering a shopping experience as entertainment. Dick?s woos customers with more than 180,000 different items and novelty d?cor, such as an extensive framed arrowhead collection and more than 100 World War II-era signed aviation prints hanging from the ceiling.

?You have to have heart and a passion to set yourself apart from those box stores because you can?t compete with their prices,? says Mr. Hartley, who left corporate life in 1993 to join the family business.

Computers don?t track inventory. Instead, clerks working the floor closely watch what sells and what doesn?t. They ask customers what they like. The store is chaotic and lively.

A grandfather shows his grandson a bag of American-made glass marbles, a potato gun, and a yo-yo. Down another narrow aisle, a tourist fills up a vintage wood, cloth, and metal shopping bag with holiday bubble lights. Still another customer peruses the store?s 250 board games and 30 feet of jigsaw puzzles.

Dick?s prides itself on obscure items. Hartley scours trade shows for hot sellers such as the 1950s perfume ?Blue Waltz,? cinnamon toothpicks, cap guns, and 20 styles of hair nets in 1960s packaging that sell for 89 cents.

?We will keep that dime-store image, fully assorted and fully stocked,? Hartley says.

Britain, EU to intensify pressure on Iran (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? European Union foreign ministers aim to exert pressure on Iran and deepen its economic isolation, but the nature of new sanctions is still being discussed, Britain and the EU's foreign policy chief said on Thursday.

"I hope we will agree today additional measures that will be an intensification of the economic pressure on Iran, peaceful legitimate economic pressure, particularly to increase the isolation of the Iranian financial sector," British Foreign Minister William Hague said, two days after protesters stormed the British Embassy in Tehran.

Hague also blamed the Iranian government for assisting the Syrian government in trying to suppress protests in Syria.

European Union foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, arriving just after Hague for a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels, said there was support for new sanctions.

"On Iran it's a case of adding more," Ashton said. "You know we've been working to, if you like ratchet up the sanctions," she said. "We're talking about a range of sanctions. It will be decided today exactly what those sanctions should be."

Obama, Bill Clinton Push Jobs Plan, Encourage Congress To Extend Payroll Tax Cut

WASHINGTON -- In a potent political tableau, President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton stepped into a construction site Friday to push a plan for more jobs through energy efficient buildings ? a joint appearance that Obama used to prod Congress to extend a current payroll tax cut.

The unusual pairing of Obama and the popular former president was designed to draw attention to a $4 billion administration initiative aimed at achieving fuel savings and more employment at no increased cost to taxpayers.

Obama said the program was a cheap way to help create jobs, save money and cut down on pollution.

"It is a trifecta," he said.

The program's appeal is that the cost to renovate government and private sector buildings is paid off over time by the energy savings. What's more, the contractors who perform the work guarantee that lower energy costs will materialize.

"It is the nearest thing we've got to a free lunch in a tough economy," Clinton said.

The announcement is yet another in a string of White House initiatives designed to address the current weak economy without having to seek congressional approval.

But the program itself was overshadowed by the television-ready image of the incumbent president and the last two-term Democrat to serve in the White House appearing together.

Alluding to ads by a Republican-leaning political group that feature Clinton comments about tax increases, Obama said: "I've noticed that some folks on the other side have been quoting President Clinton about it's a bad idea to raise taxes during tough economic times."

"That's precisely why I sought to extend the payroll tax this year and next year. It doesn't mean we lock in tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. I don't think President Clinton has been on board for that for perpetuity."

To that, Clinton looked on with nodding delight.
