Panel backs lung cancer screening for some smokers

For the first time, government advisers are recommending screening for lung cancer, saying certain current and former heavy smokers should get annual scans to cut their chances of dying of the disease.

If it becomes final as expected, the advice by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force would clear the way for insurers to cover CT scans, a type of X-ray, for those at greatest risk.

That would be people ages 55 through 79 who smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or the equivalent, such as two packs a day for 15 years. Whether screening would help younger or lighter smokers isn't known, so scans are not advised for them. They also aren't for people who quit at least 15 years ago, or people too sick or frail to undergo cancer treatment.

"The evidence shows we can prevent a substantial number of lung cancer deaths by screening" ? about 20,000 of the 160,000 that occur each year in the United States, said Dr. Michael LeFevre, a task force leader and family physician at the University of Missouri.

Public comments will be taken until Aug. 26, then the panel will give its final advice. Reports on screening were published Monday in Annals of Internal Medicine.

The recommendation is a big deal for many reasons. The task force, an independent group of doctors appointed by the government, in recent years has urged less frequent screening for breast and cervical cancers, and no screening for prostate cancer, saying PSA blood tests do men more harm than good. There are no good ways to screen for ovarian cancer or other less common types.

But lung cancer is the top cancer killer worldwide. Nearly 90 percent of people who get it die from it, usually because it's found too late for treatment to succeed. About 85 percent of lung cancers in the U.S. are attributable to smoking, and about 37 percent of U.S. adults are current or former smokers. The task force estimates that 10 million Americans would fit the smoking and age criteria for screening.

The American Cancer Society used to recommend screening with ordinary chest X-rays but withdrew that advice in 1980 after studies showed they weren't saving lives. Since then, CT scans have come into wider use, and the society and other groups have endorsed their limited use for screening certain heavy smokers.

The scans cost $100 to as much as $400 and are not usually covered by Medicare or private insurers now. But under the new health care law, cancer screenings recommended by the task force are to be covered with no copays.

"It's generally going to be covered by all health plans" if the advice gets final task force approval, said Susan Pisano of the industry trade group America's Health Insurance Plans. She said her group may develop a response during the public comment period but has had "high regard" for the task force in the past "because they rely so heavily on the evidence" in crafting their recommendations.

The task force considered lung cancer screening in 2004 but said there was too little evidence to weigh risks and benefits. Since then, a major study found that screening the age group covered in the task force's recommendation could cut the chances of dying from lung cancer by up to 20 percent and from any cause by nearly 7 percent.

Screening "is absolutely not for everybody," not even all smokers, LeFevre stressed. That includes President Barack Obama, who said a couple years ago that he had quit smoking. Obama is too young (he will turn 52 in a few days) and too light a smoker (he reportedly smoked less than a pack a day), to be in the high-risk group advised to get screening.

The potential benefits of screening may not outweigh its possible harms for people not at high risk of developing lung cancer. A suspicious finding on a scan often leads to biopsies and other medical tests that have costs and complications of their own. The radiation from scans to look for cancer can raise the risk of developing the disease.

"These scans uncover things, often things that are not important. But you don't figure out that for a while," and only after entering "the medical vortex" of follow-up tests, said Dr. Peter Bach, a cancer screening expert at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

The best way to prevent lung cancer is to quit smoking or never start, and screening doesn't make smoking safer, doctors stress.

"That's everyone's public health concern: People will see this as a pass to continue smoking," Bach said of screening. "I don't think it's likely," because people know how harmful smoking is, he said.

S. Sudan president: Will form inclusive government

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? South Sudan's president says he wants to form an inclusive government after firing his vice president and dismissing his entire cabinet last week.

Salva Kiir said Monday that he is consulting leaders of different political parties before announcing a new cabinet. On Saturday Kirr appointed his former government spokesman as his foreign minister, the only appointment made so far.

The recent government shake-up in Africa's newest country followed reports of a power struggle within the ruling SPLM party, especially between Kiir and former Vice President Riek Macher.

Both Macher and the dismissed leader of the ruling party, Pagan Amum, have expressed interest in running for president in South Sudan's 2015 election.

Kiir on Monday lashed out at his political opponents, saying that now "is not the time for campaigns."

Argus (for iPhone)

If you've considered buying a hundred-dollar (or more) fitness tracker but aren't entirely sold on the concept, the Argus iPhone app (free) lets you play around with reaching the same end without spending any money upfront. Argus can count your steps all day long, map your runs, track your sleep, and help you keep an eye on what you're eating, too. It includes features for charting your weight over time, as well as keeping tabs on how much water and coffee you consume?all similar to what you'll find in the apps that go with Fitbit One, Jawbone UP, or any other popular activity tracker. And heck, if you like Argus, you can continue using it with a couple of supported devices.

Argus is nowhere near as convenient as one of those more expensive fitness trackers, primarily because Argus runs your iPhone's GPS in the background all day long, which obliterates the battery, but it offers a totally commitment-free way to dabble in self quantification.

Argus in Action
If you download the Argus app and set up a free account, you're nearly ready to roll with it. The app will ask for some basic information about your body, such as your date of birth (to calculate age), sex, and height. Metric and Imperial units of measure are both supported. Note that you do have to enable Location Services for the app to work, which the app will prompt you to do during setup.

Once properly installed, the app will automatically count how many steps you take in a day and measure the total in miles (or kilometers if you prefer). If you run, the app detects the faster movement and will provide additional details about your run, such as a map of the route you took, similar to MapMyRun and Runtastic PRO. Those more specific runners' apps provide a lot more detail and insight into your workout, but Argus covers the basics.

A honeycomb display is one of the signature features in the app's look and feel. As you use Argus to measure different aspects of your health, it populates a new section of a honeycomb with that data (see the slideshow). For example, one honeycomb cell displays the number of steps you've taken since this morning, while another shows total miles traveled. Yet another cell shows the weather report for that day (helpful so you can see in your history if you were less active than usual due to bad weather). The design reminds me a little of the app that comes included with the Larklife, which is by far the most interesting aspect of that mediocre gadget.

When you tap once on a cell, the app gives you more details about that cell's information, such as a chart or graph of your activity. Tap and hold any cell, and all similar cells cobble together so you can easily compare the data from previous days, too.

Logging your weight in Argus can be manual or automatic, if you connect the app to a supported smart scale, such as Withings Smart Body Analyzer(WS-50). Argus is also compatible with two wrist-worn fitness trackers, LifeTrak and New Balance Life TRNr+, so you can continue to use the app even if you decide to buy a full-on activity-tracking device.

Calorie-counting in the app fell far short of my expectations. You can snap photos of meals, which save to your account and appear among the honeycomb display, but you can't actually log the specific foods you eat to add up the calories in an entire meal or over the course of the day. On the other hand, the app does estimate calories expended based on your activity, which makes the lack of calorie intake feature even more perplexing. If this app can't offer full calorie-counting, I wish it at least could connect to a better app for the job, such as MyFitnessPal, our Editors' Choice, or Lose It!

You can use the app to track a whole lot more personal metrics, including sleep, water consumption, heart rate, and fitness goals?and that's all well and good except for the one big drag for the app overall. The GPS necessarily runs in the background all day long, which totally kills the iPhone's battery. The first day I used Argus, my phone warned me of dwindling battery life before sunset. The app's a lot of fun to use, but you'd better keep an iPhone charger with you if you plan to really use it.

Argus Fitness Aggregator
Except for the fact that Argus takes a serious toll on your iPhone's battery, it offers a wonderful entry-level experience into the world of fitness tracking and general health self-quantification. I do recommend it to anyone who is not yet sure whether they want to spend $100 or more on a fitness-tracking device. Argus lets you get the feel for the process and gives decent insight into your patterns, but a full-fledged gadget definitely improves the process ten-fold.

Chinese labour report references less expensive iPhone production

Chinese labour report references less expensive iPhone production

It's nowhere nearly like leaving a prototype in a bar, but if proven accurate, a Chinese labor report potentially leaking information about an announced, less expensive iPhone, certainly won't make Apple happy. First noticed by Jony Evens of Computer World, the report includes:

"Today?s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone?s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple."

Ben Lovejoy of 9to5Mac noticed this line:

Its assembled products include iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and low-priced plastic iPhones

The iPhone 3GS was discontinued when the iPhone 4 went free last year, which means Apple is not longer ordering any known plastic-backed iPhones. So, what product are they referencing?

In quest for energy, biofuels gaining ground

Recycling ? Industry sees fat potential returns, powering cars, not just chickens.

For more than 130 years, Darling International has operated in a little-known corner of U.S. industry, breaking down the leftovers of the meat industry for products including cattle feed and cosmetics.

Then last month the Irving, Texas-based rendering giant announced it was entering the biofuels market. Partnered with Valero Energy Corp., Darling was beginning production at a $425 million plant in Louisiana converting animal fat into fuel.

Biofuels "make up between 25 and 30 percent of sales in fats and oils now," said Tom Cook, president of the National Renderers Association. "It?s provided a whole new outlet that just adds to the traditional market, which is primarily animal feed."

From soybean farmers to used cooking oil recyclers, recent growth in the biofuels sector has given industries that trade in organic matter an unexpected entree into the energy sector.

Last year biofuels accounted for more than 7 percent of U.S. transportation and heating fuel. From coast to coast, ethanol and biodiesel are being increasingly mixed with traditional petroleum-based products to run cars and trucks.

In 2005, Congress mandated that refineries add greater amounts of biofuel to the fuel stream. So far that has largely benefited the ethanol industry, which turns corn into motor fuel.

But with the federal mandates starting to shift emphasis to other fuels like biodiesel and renewable diesel, that should change in the next decade, said Ben Evans, a spokesman for the National Biodiesel Board.

"Biodiesel is never going to be the only source of fuel. It?s never going to overtake petroleum," Evans said. "But right now the transportation fuels market is completely dominated by the petroleum sector.

"We think the market would look a lot better if it was more diversified, like the electricity market, which is very diversified and much more stable."

For now, the bulk of biodiesel comes from a network of smaller producers, Evans said.

story continues below

Jason Burroughs, owner of Austin-based DieselGreen Fuels, sells between 5,000 and 6,000 gallons of pure biodiesel a month in Austin and Dallas. He uses the recycled cooking oil his company collects from restaurants.

But operations hit a snag recently. The biodiesel plant he had used shut down, forcing him to buy the fuel on the open market and resell it to his customers.

"It?s the same net environmental impact. It just doesn?t work out as well for us economically," he said.

Whether the industry can expand beyond the government mandates remains an open question. But already those that produce so-called feedstocks like soybean oil and animal fat suppliers are feeling an economic boost.

U.S. animal rendering operations have struggled in recent years, after cattle herds were thinned by drought, Cook said. But demand from the biofuels industry has provided a surprising boost. Prices on products such as tallow are up more than 50 percent since 2007.

Farmers have seen a similar benefit. A 2011 study by Purdue University found high demand from the biofuels sector had led to rising prices on crops such as soybeans and corn.

Concern that rising biofuel demand will lead to a spike in food prices is pushing scientists to look for fuel sources outside the food supply.

Some hope that algae, of which there is near-limitless supply across the world?s oceans, can one day fill that void.

But the technology to convert algae into an economically viable fuel has not been developed yet, said Arthur Ragauskas, a chemistry professor at Georgia Tech who works on developing new biofuel technologies.

This Man Tried To Rob A Gun Store Using A Baseball Bat

derrick moseley

Derrick Mosley walked into Discount Gun Sales, smashed one of the glass cases with a bat and helped himself to an unloaded handgun. The store owner, who was ? not too surprisingly ? packing his own loaded pistol, very calmly like trained his sights on Mosley and demanded that he drop the gun, the baseball bat and a knife he was carrying. Mosley complied and was held at gunpoint until deputies arrived a short time later and arrested him without further incidence.

Mosley was charged first-degree robbery, first-degree theft, unlawful possession of a firearm and second-degree criminal mischief.

No one was injured during the robbery attempt, but there are unconfirmed reports that the store owner was seen shaking his head in disbelief at some point during the ordeal.?

3 dead when bus carrying teens crashes in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A bus carrying teenagers returning to Indiana from a church camp in Michigan crashed Saturday afternoon just minutes from home, killing three people and sending 26 others to hospitals, officials said.

The bus came speeding off of Interstate 465 in northern Indianapolis, about a mile from the Colonial Hills Baptist Church that passengers attended, struck a retaining wall as it rounded a curve and overturned. The campers were returning from Camp CoBeAc in northern Michigan, about six hours away.

The church's youth pastor had sent a tweet a couple of hours before the crash saying the group was expected to arrive at the church about 4:15 p.m., around the time the accident happened.

"They were not that far from home. That only adds to the tragedy," said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs.

The dead included a man and his wife, Riggs said. Authorities did not provide information about the third victim.

Riggs and Mayor Greg Ballard visited the crash scene, where clothing, pillows and seat cushions from the bus were scattered along with at least two shattered windows, before they headed to the church. Riggs said there was no indication that the driver had a medical emergency and called the accident "a great tragedy."

Ballard said investigators were taking measurements and examining the bus to determine the cause of the crash.

WTHR-TV reported the bus driver told witnesses his brakes failed. Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush said police and fire officials had not determined whether the church-owned bus, which was carrying 37 passengers plus the driver, had mechanical issues.

Duane Lloyd told WTHR that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m.

"I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus," Lloyd said. "I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

Karen Woodard, a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, cried as she stared at the wrecked bus.

"It's so terrible. I can't believe it," she said.

Indianapolis Fire Department said crews had to free five people who were trapped inside after the crash. Several people stopped to help before first responders could arrive, including one man who helped pull the driver out of the bus, the department said.

"People were stopping their cars. People were literally trying to lift the bus," Lloyd said. "You just try to do what you can do."

Fire officials said the injured included children and adults.

Nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. Three of those were treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Sally Winter said. She said 10 others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Seven of those teenagers were treated and released, Winter said.

Many of the patients were suffering head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Roads near the scene were closed, and authorities urged people to use caution in the area. A hazardous materials crew was cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled in the crash.

Outside the church, a yellow school bus with the church school's name was parked outside with piles of sleeping bags and suitcases nearby. Families hugged outside and talked quietly before going inside, where they met with Ballard and Riggs Saturday evening.

Ballard described the families as "remarkably positive" despite their sorrow.

"Some of the teenagers are hurting pretty bad and you can see that in their faces," he said.

Church member Jeff Leffew, 44, of Fishers, who had three daughters on the bus that crashed and a fourth on a second bus, said he was waiting to pick them up in the church parking lot when the second bus arrived. He said he knew immediately that something was wrong because the kids on the bus were screaming.

He went to the crash scene and found his three daughters with only bumps and bruises.

He called the crash scene "surreal."

"You're just praying that it's not as bad as it looks," he said.

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) ? The driver of a speeding train that derailed in Spain, killing 78 people, said minutes after the crash that he had been going fast and couldn't brake, a local resident who rushed to the scene of the accident said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

Evaristo Iglesias told Antena 3 television that he and another person accompanied the blood-soaked Francisco Jose Garzon Amo to a stretch of flat ground where other injured people were being laid out, waiting for emergency services to arrive.

"He told us that he wanted to die," Iglesias said.

"He said he had needed to brake but couldn't," Iglesias said. He added that Garzon said "he had been going fast."

The television channel showed a photograph of Iglesias in a pink shirt and cap helping carry the driver after the Wednesday accident in Santiago De Compostela.

It also aired television footage of Iglesias working beside the wrecked train to help other survivors.

Garzon has been released from the hospital and is in police custody on suspicion of negligent homicide. He is expected to give testimony to an investigating judge later Sunday, though he exercised his right to remain silent when police tried to interview him.

The judge will also have access to information contained in the train's "black box," which is similar to those found on aircraft.

The train carrying 218 passenger in eight cars blazed far over the speed limit into a high-risk curve, tumbling off the tracks and slamming into a concrete wall, with some of the cars catching fire.

Authorities have pointed to speed as the culprit, and officials have said that the brakes should have been applied four kilometers (2.5 miles) before the train hit the curve.

Investigators must determine if Garzon failed to apply the brakes or whether it was a technical failure.

Iglesias was among survivors and witnesses who began to give evidence to police on Sunday.

Meanwhile, authorities said forensic experts have identified the last three bodies among the dead. They did not reveal the names of the dead, but said Sunday that all of the families had been notified.

Mourning continued throughout Spain, with Sunday church services being held in remembrance of the dead.

A large funeral mass is planned for Monday afternoon, and the prime minister and royal family are expected to attend.

Healthy Self Improvement Tips For Creative Personal Growth | make ...

Self improvement is about bettering yourself and taking on things that improve upon who you are as a person. Fulfilling personal goals, gaining self awareness and developing your spirituality are all important for self improvement. This article is your source for top-flight self-improvement strategies. Remember, begin you personal development journey slowly, and, before long, you will begin to understand more about yourself.

Hang out with people who are similar to you. This will help you to have a better attitude and maintain it as well as keeping you away from bad people that aren?t behind your dreams and goals.

When dealing with personal development, not making a decision means forgoing an opportunity. You should not avoid decision making, even if you feel that you do not have all the information. Your good instincts will develop through your successful decisions. You will make the wrong decision sometimes. Use those mistakes as a chance to learn something new. When you make the wrong choices, you know what better choices to make in the future.

Try and surround yourself with people who think like you do. Like-minded people will help strengthen your resolve while reinforcing positive attitudes.

TIP! You must know your own values to come up with a personal development plan. Devoting attention to things that undermine your value system is foolish.

Try and find what is in the way of you becoming a success. Sometimes, this can be a difficult job for you to see on your own. To be successful at personal development, start by pinpointing any areas of weakness and target these areas for improvement. When you are able to get rid of obstacles, then your path to a successful future becomes easier to navigate.

Be more productive at work by getting the most out of your time there. This trick involves taking more breaks when working. It may seem counterintuitive, but you can actually increase your productivity by taking frequent breaks. That way, you will be refreshed when you return to work and motivated to produce at a much higher level.

Put your core beliefs into practice. Your personal beliefs create the foundation for who you are. When you consistently practice these, you will gain confidence and believe in yourself. Sticking to your beliefs will also provide your life with greater consistency in every aspect, making life more manageable and you more admirable.

Write a pep talk for yourself. Write down everything you like about yourself. Keep it handy, and when you need a little motivation, read it. For even more powerful results, record a video of yourself reading your list and watch it frequently. This might sound silly but it really helps.

TIP! If the quality level of today is 2000, try to make tomorrow?s quality level 2001 or higher. Keep aiming higher and higher.

Identifying your personal values are the stepping stone to figuring out a personal development plan that works for you. If you go against your values, you are shooting yourself in the foot. When your efforts are focused on development that is aligned with your core values, your time and effort will be rewarded. If you do this, you can make lifelong positive changes, both personally and professionally.

Create an emergency fund. Many people think that a credit card counts as an emergency fund. Putting a few dollars a week into an emergency fund will add up over time. This will be able to get you through a short term crisis like unemployment or a large unexpected health care bill.

Ask others about their achievements instead of boasting about your own. You?ll be able to find out about the wonderful things the people you know have accomplished, bringing about a new-found respect and admiration for them.

TIP! People should not be afraid to investigate professional therapy to deal with serious problems. Though self-help books and online resources are great, they typically will not offer as much as a one-on-one therapy session can.

Ouya Game Console Owners Not Playing Games - internet TV

The Ouya Kickstarter-funded android based game console has been eagerly awaited by gamers. And since the launch it seems the eagerness has evaporated, as a mere 27% (or less than a third) have paid for a single game.

ouya-games-consoleThe $99 console launched last month is by definition a cheap entry into the console market, and will appeal to those that are fed up with paying $40-60 for a game,? but it would be like buying a new Xbox one and not bothering to buy a game!

Many android games are of the ?freemium? variety, that is you can download a free version and pay if you want extra level or the full version. And of course, the android system makes for a great streaming device and XBMC media platform.

Most early buyers of the fledgling game console have been crowdsource investors, so possible the console is more of a trophy than a working product, and it could be that the second wave of public Ouya buyers may be a little less ?tight?.

Speaking to The Verge CEO of Ouya, Julie Uhrman put on a brave face saying that sales have been, ?better than expected,? and that, ? For 13 of the top 20 games on the system, at least eight percent of free downloads are converted into a paid purchase.?

And pointing to the fact is has literally just been released she said, ?I think there are a lot of social and mobile app developers that would kill for an 8 percent attach rate on a platform that?s 30 days old. These numbers will grow as more gamers pick up consoles and as we attract more developers, and I believe that by the end of the year we?ll see a few developers telling us they?ve made more than a million dollars on Ouya.?

As if the low sales are not bad enough, soon Ouya will have to contend with a rival android console from Google according to the WSJ. They report that the search engine giant are designing and marketing the device themselves following the success of Android which powers over 75% of all smartphones.

Kuwait holds parliamentary election

(AP) ? Kuwaiti voters braved searing heat in the middle of the dawn-to-dusk Ramadan fast to cast ballots Saturday in parliamentary elections that leaders in the oil-rich Gulf nation hope can restore some stability after years of escalating confrontations between its Western-backed rulers and an Islamist-led opposition.

The outcome is likely to be strongly in favor of candidates allied with the ruling dynasty as opposition factions have pledged to boycott the voting ? Kuwait's third parliamentary election in 17 months.

But that is no guarantee of calming the political upheavals, which have touched off street clashes and widening crackdowns by authorities on social media. The ruling Al Sabah family ? a close Washington ally ? is facing criticism of overreaching and imposing heavy-handed tactics against a diverse array of foes that includes liberals seeking greater political openness and groups ideologically tied to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Kuwait's 50-seat parliament has by far the strongest powers of any elected body among the Gulf Arab states. In the past, opposition lawmakers have directly challenged the government of alleged corruption and claims of muzzling dissent. Kuwait's 84-year-old emir controls all key government positions and policies, yet nowhere else in the Gulf can elected lawmakers block initiatives or publicly officials top officials.

The vote, which unusually falls in the middle of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, was called after a court invalidated the parliament picked in December elections. The court found technical flaws in the election, but let stand new voting rules ordered by Kuwait's ruler that brought one-vote per person.

The former system allowed four votes per person, which could be spread among various candidates. Critics say it encouraged vote buying and pressures by tribal leaders to keep the votes within their clan.

Opposition factions, led by Islamist groups, strongly objected to the change and vowed to boycott the election ? as they did in December. Many Islamists in Kuwait also are dismayed over the country's active support for the military-led leadership in Egypt that took power after toppling Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood-led administration earlier this month. Kuwait has pledged $4 billion to Egypt in loans, grants and fuel.

Other Gulf Arab countries are closely watching the moves by Kuwait's Islamists, considered by the United Arab Emirates and others as part of a wider network seeking to bring down their pro-Western fraternity. Washington, too, is deeply vested in Kuwait's stability as a critical link in the Pentagon's military array against nearby Iran. Kuwait hosts thousands of U.S. soldiers in the largest deployment of American ground forces in the region.

Other groups, such as liberals and online activists, appear willing to join the voting this time. But there is still deep-rooted anger on all sides over Kuwait's social media clampdowns, part of wider Gulf efforts to punish Twitter users and others for posts considered insulting to rulers. Dozens of people in Kuwait have faced charges over online posts since last year.

The rare Ramadan election was held during daylight hours despite temperatures expected to peak near 50 degrees (122 F). There has been no official declaration from Kuwait's religious authorities on whether it was acceptable to break the fasting in the withering heat.

But at least two prominent Islamic scholars were quoted in Kuwaiti newspapers as suggesting that circumstances could open room for eating or drinking during the day, which is permitted under Islamic law for instances such as health or long travel.

Mohammad Tabtabai, a Sunni professor of Islamic law at Kuwait University, said long voting lines in the heat could be considered an "extraordinary" event that would allow breaking the Ramadan fast. A Shiite cleric, Mohammad al-Mohri, that breaking the fast could be allowed for voters forced to travel to distant voting stations.

None of the Kuwaiti parliaments elected from 2003 onward has completed its full four-year term. The first elections in Kuwait were held in 1963, two years after the country's independence.

Are there any contributors out there with an Android-based phone?

I've written a little app which lets you keep watch on your account and notify you of sales. It also shows you assorted statistics, sales details, and lets you read your iStock sitemail. It's free.

I have no plans to write a version for other platforms - sorry iPhone, Blackberry, Palm Pre, Windows Phone users.

Updated to give better information (size and royalty earned) for recent sales.

Because this involves scraping data from more webpages, the very first time you run the application it will spend quite a while in the "Talking to iStock: Gathering data..." phase.? How long depends on quite a few factors including, of course, how good a signal your phone has and whether it's connected by 2G, 3G or Wifi.? Best to set it running and go make yourself a sandwich and a cup of tea (or a pie and a pint if that's more your thing).? Subsequent refreshes will be much faster (unless you have hundreds of sales and don't refresh for days).

Edited to remove obsolete screenshot.

That's odd. I just checked with my phone to make sure that it is still active and all looks fine. I took a look through the web logs and I don't see any Android browsers connecting for the last couple of days. My first thought was that you might be using one of the 3rd party browsers that are in beta-test, but I don't see any connections from them, either. Do you remember roughly what day and time you looked with your phone's browser (and what timezone you're in!) because I'd really like to get to the bottom of it if there's a problem on the server.
However, on a different note...now that I have an API key from istock, I'm completely rewriting the application. It might be worth holding off for a little while whilst I knock it into shape.

Thanks a lot for your interest,
Martin

Thanks for trying again. My best guess is that there's a cache somewhere between your phone and the livestock webserver and it's feeding you old pages. My phone doesn't seem to give me a cached page, so I wonder if it's a difference between the USA and UK services, or if you're on some non-standard service.

When I have a stable version of the app I'll submit it to the Android Marketplace (it'll still be free) and any such problems should go away. Sorry that it's being a pain for you in the meantime

Is this still in the works?? This would be especially useful now that the iStock page is slightly mangled in the Android browser (the main toolbar gets wrapped around under the search bar).

Development of LiveStock is on hold for the time being. I'm hoping to put some time aside in the next few weeks in order to knock it into a decent shape.

If I don't find time to do that, I'll put out the version that's currently on my phone. This doesn't do much more than let you know you've had a sale and what you've earned.

Heh - actually, the reasons for delay have changed somewhat. The chap in the Glasgow store where I got my phone told me that I was one of the first people to get a G1 from them, and that I was definitely the first to bring one in for repair. I don't expect it back for at least another couple of weeks...hopefully I can then make some more progress.

Thanks for the patience!

A positive update, at last.
My G1 has been repaired and returned. I'm re-implementing LiveStock, building on what I learned about programming for the G1 first time around. I'm planning on releasing an alpha version of LiveStock2 in the next few days:
- the new version will be simpler than the old version to avoid using up the G1's resources so quickly - this should result in fewer bugs and better battery life;
- I'll be releasing through the Android Market rather than my own web pages - that means installing and upgrading between versions will be more straightforward. I understand that it takes a little while for an application to work its way through the Market after release, so I'll not announce its availability until it's actually visible.

Thanks for your patience!

I'm happy to announce that a new version of LiveStock is now available.
It is available (for free!) from the Android Market. You'll find it in the Market in Applications->Tools, or just search for "livestock".

The current version is 2.0.14 alpha (as of 17 April 2009); this is a complete rewrite of the previous version of the application. Although it is usable and, I think, useful, I'd like to stress that this should be considered alpha quality software.

I am aware of a few flaws. In particular, the first time you run it it can take a long time to pull some of your information from the istock servers. This pull really should happen in a background thread - because it doesn't, your phone may warn you that LiveStock is taking a long time to respond. If that happens, just touch the "Wait" button. This is the item highest on my priority list to fix.

The first time you run it, it will ask you to enter your istock login details. I strongly recommend that you touch the "Test" button before saving so that LiveStock can attempt a connection to the iStock servers to check you entered them correctly.
screen1

The main screen will display some current stats and your most recent downloads.
screen2

From the main screen, just touch the refresh button and it will pull your current details from istock.

This is still an early version and there are many things I want to improve and features I want to add. First on the list of things to fix is the horrible delay the first time you pull data from istock. The next most important feature is to make LiveStock run as a service so that it automatically pulls data from istock at regular intervals. Once that is done, it will be able to notify you as sales happen.

Of course, this isn't istock-supported software so please direct your complaints, plaudits, requests, rants, bug reports, etc to me either in this thread or via sitemail.

Enjoy.

I've just pushed a new version (2.0.15) to the Market. If you look for Livestock in the market and you already have 2.0.14 installed, you will be given the option to update.

The main change in 2.0.15 is that the disturbing silence (or even more disturbing Force Close/Wait dialog) when refreshing the list of recent downloads is now replaced by a progress indicator - no more wondering whether or not there's anything happening. A lesser, but related, change is that there is now a "Refresh recent DLs" option from the Menu button to force an update of the recent downloads list.

Please let me know if these changes don't seem to work for you, or if other issues appear.

The current plan is for the next release to run as a service and automatically inform you of sales - no more having to hit Refresh.

I'm pleased to announce that I've just pushed a new version (v2.1.0) of LiveStock to the Android Market. If you search for Livestock in the market on your Android phone you have the option to install or, if you have an earlier version installed already, to upgrade.

There are a number of changes in this release:
- the list of recent downloads does not update automatically. You can request an update simply with MENU->Refresh Recent DLs. This was made manual as updating the DL list involves a fair amount of network traffic which helps run down your phone's battery.
- you don't need to request that Livestock checks to see if you've had a sale. Instead it runs in the background and automatically checks for any changes to your balance. If your balance changes, you get a notification. (But see my note below!)
- a few minor cosmetic changes.
- quite a few small bugs have been squashed.

Automatic Checks
Every 20 minutes or so, LiveStock will check to see if your balance has changed. If it does change, LiveStock posts a notification.
livestocknotification1

livestocknotification2

If your phone is in sleep-mode (i.e. when the screen has blanked), LiveStock will not wake the phone to check the balance. Waking the phone seems to be relatively power-hungry and it runs the battery down far too quickly. I hope to improve this in future. However, if some other application wakes the phone then LiveStock will take the opportunity to do its checks.

I hope you like the changes. Please do let me know of any bugs or strange experiences, or feature requests you may have.

Edit: I should add, this has been tested on both the older version of Android (1.1) and the new "cupcake" release (1.5).

Enjoy!

Hi,

Most of the time if i open your app it says "stats updated" and if i close it and then open it it will give the new stats. I have never seen a notification about automatic stats update after 20 minutes. It only gives this message if i have the app opened. Am i missing something?

I love this app! thanks for your hard work.

Hmmm...I've seen the same thing some days, but not always. In a future version I'll try triggering the notifications a different way and see if that helps.

If I can get to the bottom of it, I'll put out a new version in the next couple of days. If I can't find the problem immediately, it will probably be a couple of weeks before I put out a new version due to other commitments.

Many thanks for the report!

I've completely rewritten the automated checking and it now works in a way that I think you'll like. The checking also does less processing, which means less drain on the battery. Which means LiveStock can now check for and notify you of sales even when the phone is sleeping.

I'll delay releasing it until after Thursday night's downtime just in case there are any site changes that would affect LiveStock.
