I freaking LOVE Eden of the East! Best anime series is a while!

Are you trying to stick to the show and go off on your own?

It will be completely different from the show. Only the concept shall remain the same. :]

That sounds great. =D
It wouldn't be as exciting if we stuck to the story, although...if you continued from the last movie, that'd be a different story.

But that's totally off topic.

What are you looking for in a character? Or is this just a 'be yourself and see where the story leads' kind of thing?

The characters can be literally anyone - I am not looking for anything too specific. They have to be
between the ages 18 and 65. I figured this will make things more interesting. Everyone has been
given a LOT of room for creativity. I am excited to see what will happen.

Well I think I might have to jump on this train...what say you?

You are most welcome to join. So long as everyone keeps their posts at the minimum of 350-400
words I will open my arms to anyone. The concept will remain the same but everything other than
that has changed. The world is also completely different, as is society, but I will get to that in
the introduction. :)

Review ~ "Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom" - Bookworm Lisa

Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom by Devin D. Thorpe

Rating: 4 of 5 stars
Genre: Self Help/ Religious
Source: Received electronic copy to review

Book Description:?Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom is a simple, practical guide to help LDS families organize their personal financial plans to meet their unique goals. The book provides simple answers to questions like:

How much should I be saving each month for my son?s mission?
How much should I be saving each month for my children?s college education?
How can I save enough to be able to retire while I?m healthy enough to serve a mission?

Avoiding tips on pinching pennies, the book focuses on opportunities to save thousands or tens of thousands of dollars by making smart moves with big decisions, like home and car purchases.

Mormon families will appreciate the gospel-centered, scripture-based focus on putting tithing at the center of a financial plan. Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom will help prepare families to enjoy the benefits of their labor while simultaneously contributing to the growth of Church.

My thoughts: ? Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom tackles the problem many are having in managing finances. ?I will admit that this is one of the things that has been plaguing me lately.

This book takes a practical approach to a tough subject. ?While it is written primarily to an LDS reader, I feel that there are many ways that this can help any family/person in need of solid advice. ?While the lessons are not new to me, it is always good to be reminded on how to succeed in managing finances. ?It is good to rededicate myself and family to the principals discussed.

Financial security is something that we can obtain, if we learn to budget and look at wants vs. needs. ?This book looks at financial planning and the author even suggests finding a good one who can help individuals work within their own budget.

Thanks Devin for reminding me what I really need to be doing to help my family find stability in an unstable economy.

About the author:?Devin D. Thorpe brings a broad perspective to financial planning, having owned and operated an investment-banking firm?which included an investment advisory business?and a mortgage brokerage and having served in a variety of corporate finance positions.

Presently, Devin serves as a business professor at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China on behalf of Brigham Young University?s Kennedy Center China Teachers program. Previously, he served as the Chief Financial Officer for the multinational company MonaVie, listed in Inc. Magazine?s 2009 Inc. 500 as the 18th fastest growing company in America and, at $834 million in revenue, the third largest company on the list.

Prior experience includes two years working on the staff of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee during Utah Senator Jake Garn?s tenure. He also served briefly in Utah State Government, working at USTAR under Governor Jon Huntsman. ?He earned an MBA with focus in Finance and Accounting from Cornell University?s Johnson Graduate School of Management. He completed his undergraduate degree in finance at the University of Utah, where he later worked as an adjunct professor of finance. In 2006,

Devin was recognized by the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah as a Distinguished Alum. In the Church, Devin presently serves as a seminary teacher along with his wife, Gail. Previously, he served as a counselor in a stake presidency, a counselor in a bishopric, ward executive secretary, young men?s president, assistant scout master, three times as an assistant ward clerk, and in more elders quorum presidencies than he can count. Devin ran his first marathon in 2011, finishing in 4:35.

East Coast storm wreaks havoc on presidential race

CELINA, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama frantically sought to close the deal with voters with precious few days left in an incredibly close race as this year's October surprise ? an unprecedented storm menacing the East Coast ? wreaked havoc on their best laid plans.

Ever mindful of his narrow path to the requisite 270 electoral votes, Romney looked to expand his map, weighing an intensified effort in traditionally left-leaning Minnesota. Obama sought to defend historically Democratic turf as the race tightened heading into the final week.

Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, the two White House hopefuls reshuffled their campaign plans as the storm approached. Both candidates were loath to forfeit face time with voters in battleground states like Virginia, which is likely to be afflicted when Hurricane Sandy, a winter storm and a cold front collide to form a freak hybrid storm.

"The storm will throw havoc into the race," said Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., noting that a Monday rally in his state with Obama and former President Bill Clinton has already been canceled.

Obama, preparing to depart for Florida a day early to beat the storm, followed up a morning church service with his daughters with a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's headquarters, where the president was briefed before speaking by phone to governors and mayors in affected states. Hours before rainfall was expected to begin, Obama declared a state of emergency in Maryland, freeing up federal funds to aid local response efforts.

"Anything they need, we will be there," Obama said. "And we are going to cut through red tape. We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules. We want to make sure that we are anticipating and leaning forward into making sure that we've got the best possible response to what is going to be a big and messy system."

An opportunity for Obama to demonstrate steady leadership in the face of a crisis was offset by the risk that the federal government, as in past emergencies, could be faulted for an ineffective response, with the president left to take the fall.

Obama canceled campaign stops Monday in Virginia and Tuesday in Colorado to monitor the storm but planned to go forward with other events Monday in Florida and Ohio, with Clinton at his side. He planned to return to Ohio on Wednesday with stops in Cincinnati and Akron, followed by a Thursday swing through Springfield, Ohio; Boulder, Colo.; and Las Vegas.

Romney nixed three stops in up-for-grabs Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to campaign with running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio before heading Monday to Wisconsin, where the former Massachusetts governor has chipped away at Obama's lead.

"Let's today when we get home put in our prayers the people who are in the East Coast in the wake of this big storm that's coming," Ryan said in Celina, Ohio.

As Ryan discussed the approaching end of the race, the crowd erupted with chants of "nine more days."

Also vexing to Obama and Romney was the prospect that bad weather could hinder early voting and get-out-the-vote efforts, key components for both campaigns in the waning days of the campaign.

"Obviously, we want unfettered access to the polls, because we think the more people that come out, the better we're going to do," said David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama's campaign. "To the extent that it makes it harder, that's a source of concern."

Boarding Romney's campaign bus in Dayton, Ohio, Sen. Rob Portman hedged when asked whether the storm could affect turnout in his hotly contested state: "We'll see. On early voting, it might."

Signs of the storm's enormity were quickly mounting. New York City prepared to shut down its mass transit system and ordered some residents to evacuate, while governors from North Carolina to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Airlines canceled more than 3,000 flights in anticipation of the hurricane, which has already killed more than 60 people in the Caribbean.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, whose state is among the most competitive in the race, said intensive contingency plans would prevent the storm from undermining voters' ability to cast their ballots.

"We've got about 2,000 additional people that are coming into Virginia to help our power suppliers," said McDonnell, a top Romney ally. "The state board of elections is already planning for extended hours in advance for absentee voting, and it's now a priority, moved up to the same level as hospitals and police stations to have power restored."

Getting voters to the polls ? whether early or on Election Day ? is one of the few elements of the race still in the candidates' control with little more than a week left in the race. Although Romney and Obama are in a close contest for the popular vote, the president continues to have the upper hand in the handful of contested states where the victor will be decided. An Associated Press analysis shows Romney has fewer routes than Obama to reach the 270 electoral votes he needs to oust the incumbent, although the Republican has pulled even, or is slightly ahead, in a few pivotal states like Virginia and Florida.

With time running out, both campaigns appeared to be fine-tuning their map of the states where they're campaigning the hardest.

A senior Republican official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to disclose private deliberations, said Sunday that the Romney team was seriously discussing sending Romney, Ryan or both to Minnesota during the final week. The state hasn't gone Republican in the presidential race since 1972, but recent polling shows a tighter race there than most anticipated. Both campaigns are buying TV time in the state, but neither has dispatched a member of the ticket for a public event since Vice President Joe Biden visited in August.

In a flashback to the 2008 race, Obama's campaign announced that Biden will campaign Thursday in Pennsylvania, reprising a visit to his hometown of Scranton that he made during the final week four years ago. Pennsylvania too has been Democratic territory in recent years, but Romney has continued to contest the state, with an advertising assist from the Republican Party.

Eager to show energy and momentum on their side, both teams took to the Sunday talk shows to quibble over which candidate is faring better in state-level efforts to get supporters to the polls.

"Our people are coming out," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager. "Ohio, Florida, the first day of early voting in Florida yesterday ? record numbers of people are coming out to vote. It's something like we've never, ever seen. And that's a sign."

Reince Priebus, the GOP chairman, pointed to recent gains for Romney that have lifted him to a virtual tie in most national polls. "The challenger always wins in a tie race," he said.

Axelrod, Priebus and McDonnell spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Warner spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and Cutter on ABC's "This Week."

Certain Death of Your Real Estate Investing Business

real estate marketing

Do you know what the one thing is that will cause certain death of your real estate investing business? I can tell you what it is; a lack of leads. Leads are the life blood of your business; without them your business will wither and die. Consistent and focused marketing is the only way to get that steady stream of leads.

Jump Starting Your Marketing

There are probably dozens of ways that you can jumpstart your marketing. It has been my experience that most successful real estate investors regularly use more than one strategy. In my business, direct mail is my number one source of motivated sellers. I have a system for getting it done, and therefore I have great results with direct mail

I am committed to making some changes in my marketing for the upcoming year, and I would like to challenge you to ?up your marketing game? by adding at least one new marketing strategy each month for the next 12 months. Now I know the thing that comes to mind is ?that?s going to be a lot of work?. You can be sure that this will involve some work, but the results will be more than worth it. In the upcoming year, I also plan to work smarter (rather than harder) and figure out how to outsource some of these additional marketing activities.

Here are a couple of things you can do without spending a lot of money.

  • You can post ?We Buy Houses Ad? on Craig?s List.
  • Attend real estate auctions and network with other real estate investors. This is a great place to find out who?s is buying multiple houses each month.
  • Attending estate sales is another way to get leads on property. Spend a couple of Saturday mornings a month going to these sales. Often the property is going to be sold as well as the belongings. Make them an offer that includes finishing the clean out of the house when the sale is over. I?ve said before; there is always ?something else? sellers want other than the cash.

Get Creative with Your Direct Mail Campaigns

When we are entering probates into our database each month, there are about a dozen or so probate attorneys that come up consistently as the person who is in charge of settling the estate. Probate attorneys are a great source of leads. Compile a list of these folks and send them an introductory letter as well as a follow up letter every few months. You want them to remember you when they have an estate property that needs work or just some serious updating.

Who else would be a candidate for a direct mail campaign? Think of someone that could send you leads and drop them a line.

Do more ?driving for dollars?

I have to admit that I have fallen down on the job where this is concerned so here is what I plan to do from now on. Whenever I am out looking at property, I plan to spend at least an additional 30 minutes to an hour driving for dollars. It?s sort of like killing two birds with one stone.

If you are lucky enough to see the postman, trash collector, pest control person or other person that spends their days in the field, stop and ask them if they would be interested in earning some extra cash by giving you a call if they see a vacant or abandoned property. Today I?m going to put a whole box of business cards in my car so that I am always ready.

Magnetic Car Signs

I?ll admit right up front that I?m not a big fan of these magnetic car signs when it comes to putting them on my car. But can you think of someone that would be willing to do this for a tank of gas a month? They?re driving around anyway and a lot of folks don?t mind the signs.

Other Ideas

Maybe you could have some apparel with logos on it. How about suiting up with a polo shirt or a ball cap with ?We Buy Houses? on it the next time you go out to run errands or attend a ball game?

Join your local Board of Realtors as an affiliate and get to know these guys. It?s pretty easy to find out who the folks are that deal with distressed properties and get to know them. Networking with these folks will let them get to know you. Buy the way, this works for almost any type of business. Realtors buy things from and use all types of services from folks just like you and me.

How Can You Keep From ?Falling Off the Wagon?

Marketing your business should be your number one activity. Remember that without leads, you have no business. The most important thing I could tell you is this:

  • Schedule Your Marketing; Live By Your Calendar

Online tools are great, by nothing beats having a giant wall calendar staring you in the face every day. Have your marketing activities scheduled in advance for at least the next 3 months. I guarantee this one thing will change your business.

Last but not least, be patient. Change takes time. But if you work the plan every day, you will see big changes in your business; guaranteed!

Dear Busy Entrepreneur: Did you realize you can create a multimillion dollar business by just being able to dial the telephone? Its true and Im going to prove it to you right now. Dont worry. I?m not talking about telemarketing or phone sales or selling long distance plans or any junk like that. What I?m talking about is the fact that *you* can get hundreds of people on the phone who will pay to listen to you or someone else speak on a topic that is of interest to them. It happens thousands of times around the world every week. And you?re about to learn how you can cash in on an exploding market no matter which niche market you focus on.

Teleseminars are one of the fastest ways to make contact with and build a relationship with your existing clients and prospects. No matter what business you are in, you can profit from successful Teleseminars. Here are just a few of the different ways you can benefit from Teleseminars:

Teleseminars are not hard to do. However like anything you?re starting from scratch, there?s a learning curve. But the great news is Im going to slash that learning curve for you by months and possibly years. Here are exactly the types of questions people have about teleseminars maybe you have one of these questions, too.

There?s just a lot to ask. And when you start asking questions, you know there?s going to be time involved in getting the answers.

Now have no fear because I?m about to reveal to you a breakthrough course that?s easy to follow, has simple but effective instructions on exactly what you need to do first, second, third. I?ve investigated the different options and noted what works and doesnt work in various scenarios. I?ve found affordable ways to boost attendance. I?ve found the resources you need to get your transcripts back in 24 hours and your audio files edited and posted overnight. And I?ve found ways to do all of it inexpensively.

Take a look at what both my students and colleagues have to say about my teleseminar skills and expertise:

I had scheduled my first teleseminar series and had absolutely no experience doing a teleseminar. I looked around to see if there were any programs to teach me how to do this, I only had a couple of weeks before my teleseminar series was scheduled to start and I was getting a little nervous. I didn?t have a lot of money or time to invest in learning how to do this.

Multitude of reports allege SVP of iOS, Scott Forstall, was asked to leave Apple

More details reportedly emerge on SVP of iOS, Scott Forstall, leaving Apple

Now that Apple has announced that senior-vice-president of iOS, Scott Forstall was leaving the company, amid storms and market-closings, various additional information is surfacing on the story, at least from Apple's perspective. Namely, it's now being claimed that Forstall was fired.

First up, Mark Gurman from 9to5Mac got his hands on the memo Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, sent to employees following the news, which unlike the press release, takes the time to thank Forstall.

I am also announcing that Scott Forstall will be leaving Apple next year and will serve as an advisor to me during the interim. I want to thank Scott for all of his many contributions to Apple over his career.

However, Adam Lashinsky from Fortune is being told that things weren't so happy behind Apple's famously closed doors.

It is being said that Forstall didn't get along with Jony Ive. The knighted designer won that battle. Apple named him the chief of all "human interface" on Monday. Reading between the lines, that means software in addition to hardware. Design lovers hated the paper "shredder" that Apple introduced with its Passbook product. Ive, a fan of minimalism, must have hated it too. Watch for Apple to kill it.

Lashinsky also says Forstall refused to sign the iOS 6 Maps apology letter, something echoed by Nick Wingfield of the New York Times:

While tensions between Mr. Forstall and other executives had been mounting for some time, a recent incident appeared to play a major role in his dismissal. After an outcry among iPhone customers about bugs in the company?s new mobile maps service, Mr. Forstall refused to sign a public apology over the matter, dismissing the problems as exaggerated, according to people with knowledge of the situation who declined to be named discussing confidential matters.

Instead, Timothy D. Cook, Apple?s chief executive, in September signed the apology letter to Apple customers over maps.

Chris Ziegler of The Verge has heard likewise.

Sources tell us that Forstall has a reputation for deflecting blame, and with fallout intensifying over the Maps situation, now may have seemed like a good time for Apple to part ways with a man who'd done a good job making enemies over the years: Hurricane Sandy has given the company two days of market close to let investor reaction stabilize. Amazingly, it's said that Forstall's coworkers were so excited to show him the door that they volunteered to split up his workload.

Again, all this reads like Apple's perspective on the matter. Jessica E. Lessin of The Wall Street Journal also repeats the maps and apology letter story, but then offers some perspective from whats seems like Forstall's perspective. First, that he believed Apple could handle maps without apologizing, but also:

Mr. Forstall recently told people that there is no "decider" now that Mr. Jobs is gone, according to a person briefed on the conversation.

Mr. Forstall also recently sent some members of Apple's iOS software team an email saying that he felt the group wasn't working on enough big ideas in mobile software, according to a person briefed on the email.

If there was indeed a power struggle or a contention as to who would guide Apple's products going forward, however, it seems inarguable that Forstall lost. It also seems like Apple was willing to make hard decisions and to sacrifice even extremely talented, long tenured individuals for what they felt was the good of the company moving forward.

If it came down to a choice between Jony Ive (and Bob Mansfield) and Scott Forstall, or of Tim Cook's leadership and Scott Forstall's ambitions, it's tough to argue the call. It's not so tough to see the faith and trust being put into Jony Ive and his design sensibilities, which have so far been manifested more in hardware than software, and Craig Federighi's engineering skills, which have only recently earned him the top spot in OS X, never mind iOS.

This is either an Apple -- and more specifically a Tim Cook -- as rightly confident in their ability to manage people as they are in their ability to project product, or an Apple already fraying at the seams about to experience another serious escalation in load and stress.

I'm very much hoping it's the former.

Hulk Hogan settles sex tape lawsuit with DJ

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) ? Former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan has settled a lawsuit with a disc jockey over a sex tape involving Hogan and the DJ's wife.

A statement by Hogan's publicist Monday says the terms of the settlement are confidential.

Hogan said in a lawsuit earlier this month that he had consensual sex with his best friend's wife, Heather Clem, six years ago in the Clems' home, but he didn't know he was being videotaped.

The disc jockey, Bubba the Love Sponge Clem, apologized to Hogan on Monday. Clem also said that he's convinced Hogan was unaware he was being filmed.

A lawsuit is still pending against the gossip website Gawker, which put excerpts of the video on its site.

Bettman says full NHL season unrealistic

National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman speaks during a press conference, Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012 in New York, announcing that the Islanders hockey club will move from Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y., and play at Brooklyn's Barclays Center starting in 2015. (AP Photo/Kathy Willens)

NEW YORK (AP) ? NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman still hasn't heard what he wants from the players' association, so he won't return to the bargaining table and he won't play a full hockey season.

With only one day remaining before the league's self-imposed deadline to reach a deal that would ensure an 82-game season, Bettman revealed Wednesday that he has given up hope of a complete slate of games.

"Unfortunately, it looks like an 82-game season is not going to be a reality," he said.

Speaking at a news conference Wednesday announcing the New York Islanders' move from Nassau Coliseum to Brooklyn's Barclays Center in 2015, Bettman seemed resigned to a shortened season with the NHL and the players' association still at odds after months of negotiations.

Instead of a celebration, a pall was cast over the event as the lockout approached its 40th day. The NHL is close to another announcement that games will be wiped off the schedule for good.

Bettman stated, in making the NHL's most recent offer, that a deal needed to be in place by Thursday for the season to begin Nov. 2 and be played in full. No negotiations are scheduled this week or anytime soon.

"The fact of the matter is there are just sometimes that you need to take time off because it's clear that you can't do anything to move the process forward," Bettman said. "We're at one of those points right now because we gave our very best offer. That offer, for better or for worse, was contingent on playing an 82-game season. So I think things actually in some respects may get more difficult."

The players' association reached out to the NHL on Tuesday night in an attempt to set up a face-to-face bargaining session Wednesday, but the league declined. The NHL's position is if the union isn't willing to talk about the league's offer that is on the table and isn't prepared to make a new proposal of its own working off that offer, there is no reason to talk.

"There seems to be no interest in making any sort of deal along the lines of what we have expressed a desire and a need for," Bettman said. "Sometimes in collective bargaining you have to take a deep breath before you can move forward."

The union wants anything and everything open for discussion. Bettman wouldn't agree to those terms, so the hockey season remains in peril.

"The players made multiple core-economic proposals on Thursday that were a significant move in the owners direction," union executive director Donald Fehr said in a statement on Wednesday night. "We are and continue to be ready to meet to discuss how to resolve our remaining differences, with no preconditions. For whatever reason, the owners are not. At the same time they are refusing to meet, they are winding the clock down to yet another artificial deadline they created."

A partial season is still a possibility, and the NHL hasn't called off any marquee events such as the outdoor Winter Classic on New Year's Day or the All-Star game.

That could change in a hurry.

"I'm not going to give you an exact timetable, but at some point in November we will have to commit many millions of dollars to get ready for the Winter Classic. So if there's still uncertainty, we're going to have to make a decision," Bettman said. "My guess is we're not going to commit those dollars unless we have certainty."

At some point a deal will have to be made to get the players back on the ice. The NHL canceled the entire 2004-05 season because of a lockout that led to the league adopting a salary cap system for the first time.

A shortened season is still the most likely scenario once the sides can get back to talking and working their way to an agreement.

"Sure, you can play an abbreviated season. I would rather play a full season, and I am sure our fans would rather we play a full season," Bettman said. "That's why we made the offer we did. That was our fourth offer against really one offer from the union in all the time that we've been negotiating from the summer. We very much want to play and we're very disappointed that we're not."

Following a conference call held by the union's executive board on Tuesday night, the players' association informed the NHL it was willing to meet on Wednesday "or any other date, without preconditions, to try to reach an agreement," the union said in a statement.

The NHL's response wasn't what the players' association had hoped to hear.

"We said to them that we are prepared to meet if you want to discuss our offer or you want to make a new offer," Bettman said. "They have no inclination in doing either, and so there really was no point in meeting at this point."

The sides haven't met since the league turned down three counterproposals from the union last Thursday, two days after the NHL's offer that included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue.

There is a major divide between the sides over how to deal with existing player contracts. The union wants to ensure that those are all paid in full without affecting future player contracts.

Bettman refused to say whether the 50-50 split in the NHL's most recent offer would come off the table if a full season isn't played.

"I'm not going to negotiate publicly," he said.

This is the third lockout of Bettman's tenure. The stoppage began Sept. 16.

U.S. not supplying Stinger missiles to Syrian rebels: Pentagon

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Wednesday he had no knowledge of the United States supplying Stinger missiles to Syrian rebel forces, after Moscow said the rebels had acquired the U.S.-made surface-to-air missiles.

Asked about reports that the rebels had such weapons, Panetta declined comment, saying: "I don't know what the reports are - and I certainly don't know of us providing any such missiles in that area."

Russia's top military officer, general staff chief Nikolai Makarov, said Russia's military had learned that rebel forces "have portable missile launchers of various states, including American-made Stingers.

"Who supplied them must still be determined," Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.

A U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters the United States was unable to confirm that the rebels had acquired U.S. Stingers.

Stinger missiles would help bring down warplanes and helicopters which have bombed residential areas where rebels are hiding. But in contrast to the Libya crisis last year, the West has shown little appetite to arm the Syrian rebels, worried that weapons would fall into the hands of Islamic militants.

More than 32,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which began with peaceful pro-democracy protests in March 2011 before descending into civil war as repression increased.

The question of whether to arm the rebels has become an issue in the U.S. presidential election, with Republican candidate Mitt Romney accusing President Barack Obama of failing to show leadership.

In their debate on Monday, Romney said the United States should work with partners to organize the Syrian opposition and "make sure they have the arms necessary to defend themselves."

Obama said Romney was wrong to suggest that giving rebels heavy weapons "is a simple proposition that would lead us to be safer over the long term."

Opposition activist footage has shown rebels carrying surface-to-air missiles made by the former Soviet Union, but footage of Stingers has yet to appear.

Russia, which has supported Assad through the conflict, sold his government $1 billion worth of weapons last year and has made clear it would oppose an arms embargo in the U.N. Security Council.

Shoulder fossil may put Lucy's kind up a tree

The ancient hominid known as Lucy is getting shouldered into the trees by a recently uncovered fossil child. But scientific onlookers disagree about whether Lucy?s long-extinct species mixed tree climbing with walking.

Apelike shoulder blades from the ancient skeleton of a roughly 3-year-old girl that belonged to Australopithecus afarensis ? the same species as Lucy, a famous 3.2-million-year-old partial female skeleton found in 1974 ? suggest that these early members of the human evolutionary family split time between scrambling up trees and walking on the ground, say paleobiologist David Green of Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Ill., and anthropologist Zeresenay Alemseged of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

Scientists have argued for more than 30 years about whether A. afarensis was built mainly for walking or possessed physical attributes suitable for ascending trees as well. Shoulder blades of a fossil child discovered in 2000 in Dikika, Ethiopia, indicate that Lucy?s crew could indeed scale trees beginning early in life, Green and Alemseged report in the Oct. 26 Science.

A. afarensis inhabited East Africa 3 million to 4 million years ago.

Lucy and her cohorts spent plenty of time on foot but climbed trees to forage for fruits and to escape predators, Green proposes. Based on the new analysis of the Dikika fossils, he says, ?juvenile members of A. afarensis may have been more active climbers than adults.?

A previous analysis of the Dikika child, dubbed Selam by its discoverers, suggested that the youngster?s shoulder blades ? partly encased in rock at the time ? resembled those of gorillas (SN: 9/23/06, p. 195). Green and Alemseged have since freed the fossils from surrounding rock. Comparisons to other hominid fossils, modern apes and humans suggest that Selam?s shoulder blades are generally apelike enough to have enabled regular tree-climbing.

As in living apes, Selam and Lucy had upward-pointing shoulder sockets, Green and Alemseged say. People are born with slightly downward-pointing shoulder sockets that eventually shift to face laterally.

A bony ridge on the back of Selam?s shoulder blades runs diagonally, as in living apes, the researchers add. The same ridge runs horizontally across the top of people?s shoulder blades.

Selam?s apelike shoulders represent an evolved accommodation in A. afarensis for mixing walking with climbing, writes anthropologist Susan Larson of Stony Brook University in New York in the same issue of Science.

But Green and Alemseged need to conduct a more detailed analysis of various bony landmarks on Selam?s shoulder blades to support a scenario of frequent tree climbing, says anthropologist Yohannes Haile-Selassie of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Haile-Selassie led a team that discovered a 3.6-million-year-old partial male A. afarensis skeleton known as Big Man (SN: 7/17/10, p. 5). Everything about that find, including its feet, legs, chest, back and a surviving shoulder blade, point to a nearly humanlike gait for Lucy?s species, he says.

If Green and Alemseged show in future work that the Dikika child?s leg and foot worked in concert with her shoulder to promote climbing, Haile-Selassie says, ?then they may very well have a species different from A. afarensis.?

Skeletal traits, such as the shoulder socket?s orientation, can pass from an ancestral species to a descendant species because they?re crucial for survival or as functionally irrelevant hangers-on, says anthropologist Carol Ward of the University of Missouri in Columbia. ?This makes the significance of the Dikika shoulder blades difficult to interpret.?

A. afarensis probably retained some shoulder characteristics of earlier tree-climbing hominids that had no impact on what had become a ground-based lifestyle, says anthropologist Owen Lovejoy of Kent State University in Ohio. Lovejoy participated in the investigation of Big Man?s remains.

DefaultI'm an iPhone user, convince me to get an Android
I'm an iPhone user and am seriously considering getting an Android for my next phone. I mean, I'm satisfied with the iPhone but want to consider all my options.

I don't ask much of my smartphone, what I look for more than anything is a fast web browser, which my iPhone was consistently good at. Besides that, I just want something reliable, with a fast UI. Again, my iPhone was great at that. But with my iPhone 4 getting up there in age, I'm starting to consider getting a new phone. Just wanted to consider Android and see what you all thought. Trying to think of reasons to switch to an Android...

'Green' excavators dig improved gas mileage

1 day

The construction site is about to get a shade greener thanks to the introduction of a digger with hydraulic hybrid technology that can cut fuel use by up to 25 percent.

The digger is an upgrade to Caterpillar?s workhorse 336E, an excavator found filling dump trucks at construction sites all over the world.

The new 336E H uses a patented hydraulic hybrid system that stores and reuses energy over and over as the arm swings up and down during operation, such as digging a cellar for a new skyscraper and dumping dirt in the back of a truck.

The arm captures and stores swing-brake energy in accumulators and releases the energy during acceleration, Caterpillar explains in a news release.?

The technology makes for about a 25 percent less fuel consumption compared to the non-hybrid model. Payback for the added cost, Caterpillar noted, could come within a year assuming today?s fuel prices and heavy use.

Hybrid technology has been used in diggers since at least 2008, when Komatsu introduced its first hybrid excavator model. The company also has an electric-hybrid forklift.?

The addition of more players to the field is welcome news to both an industry that is heavily impacted by fuel costs and a planet facing continued disruption to its climate from increased greenhouse gas emissions.

The operation of excavators, graders, backhoes and other heavy machinery in the construction industry accounts for about 0.35 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, according to Komatsu.?

The construction industry emitted 66.4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2011, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That figure is expected to dip slightly in 2012 and then rebound to 90 million metric tons by the end of this decade at stay in that elevated range through 2035.?

The dip is likely attributed to a slowdown in the global economy. In earnings released on Monday, Caterpillar slashed its 2012 forecast and warned the global economy was slowing faster than it expected.

A slowing economy means fewer construction projects and thus lower greenhouse gas emissions from the industry, regardless of how fuel-efficient their diggers are.

Caterpillar said it expects the global economy to turn around in the second half of 2013, just in time for the first shipments of the 336E H. If the economy grows as anticipated, more fuel efficient diggers can help curb the pace of rising greenhouse gas emissions.

Blog Archive ? Internet Marketing Simplified! Get The Basics Here!

In comparison to other marketing ventures in the rapidly changing online world, web marketing is the time-honored grandfather of them all. Affiliate promotion has been a profit source for web businesses for almost as long as the internet has been around. With so much history and ongoing development, it is easy to find a great deal of useful information about internet marketing. Whether you are just starting out, or are experienced in internet marketing, these tips will be useful to you.

Locate affiliate marketing forums and other communities on the web to learn about different strategies, tricks, and tips for your business venture. Many good online forums exist to connect you with people that can offer tips, tricks, graphics, new affiliate ideas, and answers to your questions.

One way to increase loyalty is to allow your customers to be your affiliates. When someone buys from you, that?s a great time to suggest that they could also make money selling the product. It?s possible that you?ll end up with an affiliate who brings you several more customers. You can improve your bottom line substantially and attract affiliates who are very knowledgeable about your product benefits.

Don?t put excessive banners on your website. Overuse will distract users, and cause your site to appear brash and amateurish. Make sure your banners are appropriately spaced, and that there a good amount of content to go with the banners.

You can make good money through internet marketing, but that is only the case if you know what you?re doing. You need to get your website or blog as high a ranking as possible in each search engine. The higher your ranking, the more people will follow your affiliate links and the more money you will earn.

You should monitor in what area your links are working. Consider placing the link in different areas of the page, or within different parts of the article. Keep the page the same, except for where you place your link.

It is good to act on suggestions from just a few books about affiliates than using several. You have to put in the time upfront with no compensation, and take the risk that you will not make money. If you keep starting new books, realize that you are stalling. Eventually, you have to get your nose out of the books, apply a few of the tips you like best and get started.

Web marketing is a good way to make money. But, as with any new venture, doing your research will pay off in terms of your success.
